Clinical Research of Spanishneedles Herb on Middle and Severe Xerophthalmia of Menopause Female

Abstract:Objective To investigate therapeutic efficiency of spanishneedles herb on middle and severe xerophthalmia of menopause female. Methods It was a prospective random controlled study.Eighty patients diagnosed xerophthalmia of menopause female (aged from 50 to 56 years old) in two Hospitals from August,03 2011 to March,09 2011 were divided into two groups:spanishneedles herb group and control group,40 cases in each group.All groups had been added with Forte eye drops.All patients had been detected and evaluated by subjective symptoms of xerophthalmia.The symptom of ocular surface,Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) and tear film function tests were performed at pre-therapy and 3,7,28 days of post-therapy. Results There were no significant difference for the symptom of ocular surface,OSDI and tear film function found between two groups pre-therapy [F=0.76 (visual tiredness),0.85 (dry and unsmooth sensation),1.38 (foreign body sensation),1.42 (burning sensation),0.96 (photophobia),0.88 (pain),1.27 (red eye); TOSDI=0.532,tBUT=0.646,tTear meniscus high=0.813,tSTT=0.256,tFL=0.776; P ＞0.05)].The subjective symptoms of xevophthalmia (except of tear),FI,BUT and SIT of middle and severe xerophthalmia of spanishneedles herb group had been improved at 28 days after therapy compared with those of pre-therapy:SMD=1.33 (visual tiredness),1.14 (dry and tnsmooth sensation),0.63 (foreign body sensation),1.25(burning sensation),1.16 (photophobia),1.53 (pain),1.38 (red eye) [F1=18.8 (visual tiredness),15.60 (dry and unsmooth sensation),19.20 (foreign body sensation),24.7 (burning sensation),15.4 (photophobia),29.63 (pain),12.40 (red eye); tAOSDI=18.332,tABUT=12.158,tATear meniscus high=10.574,tASIT =9.326,tAFL=7.224; P ＜0.05].The subjective symptoms,Tear meniscus high,FI,BUT and SIT of middle and severe xerophthalmia of spanishneedles herb group had been improved at 28 days after therapy compared with those of pre-therapy.SMD=1.33 (visual tiredness),1.14 (dry and unsmooth sensation),0.63 (foreign body sensation),1.25 (burning sensation),1.16 (photophobia),1.53 (pain),1.38 (red eye) [F1=18.8 (visual tiredness),15.60 (dry and unsmooth sensation),19.20 (foreign body sensation),24.7 (burning sensation),15.4 (photophobia),29.63 (pain),12.40 (red eye); tAOSDI=18.332,tABUT=12.158,tAAheight of tear meniscus=10.574,tASIT=9.326,tAFt=7.224; P ＜0.05].The control group hadn't significantly been improved at 28.days after therapy:SMD=0.12 (visual tiredness),0.18 (dry and unsmooth sensation),0.09 (foreign body sensation),0.23 (burning sensation),0.16 (red eye; tBOSI=1.576,tBBUT=1.032,tBAheight of tear meniscus=0.879,tBAIT=0.626,tBFL=0.698; P ＞0.05) [F1=2.37 (visual tiredness); 1.22 (dry and unsmooth sensation),1.24 (foreign body sensation),3.38 (burning sensation),2.96 (red eye); P ＞0.05].There were statistically significance for OSDI,break up time (BUT),Schirmer Ⅰ test (SIT),the height of tear meniscus and fluorescein staining (FL) at the postoperative 1 month in both groups (tAOSDT=8.942,tABUT=10.646,tAheight of tear meniscus=16.572,tASIT=22.854,tAFL=6.057; P ＜0.05). Conclusions Spanishneedles herb can significantly mitigate the sings and symptoms of middle and severe xerophthalmia in menopause female.
