Current status of investigations on chemical constituents and pharmacological effects of flaxseed (Linum usitatissimum )

Abstract:Flaxseed is derived from the flax plant that contains abundant lignans with antioxidant actions. Studies suggest that lignans or their metabolites from flaxseed may play a role in the prevention and/or treatment of healthy conditions including carcinoma and hyperglycemia. The dietary products made of flaxseed have been sold in a health-food store. Other active constituents found in the flaxseed are flavones, cyclic peptides,cyanogenic glycosides,and phenylpropanoid glycosides. This paper reviews the current status on chemical constituents, pharmacological effects and metabolism in vivo of flaxseed to provide the rationale that further investigations may be required.
