Abstract:AIM: To compare the efficacy and safety between venlafaxine and clomipramine in treating major depression associated with anxiety. METHODS: Venlafaxine group of 26 patients (M 8, F 18; age 43 a± s 14 a; HAMD total score 33 points±4 points, HAMA total score 19.9 points±2.5 points) was treated with venlafaxine 50-200 mg*d-1,po,bid or tid;clomipramine group of 24 patients (M 8, F 16; age 37 a±12 a; HAMD total score 32 points±4 points, HAMA total score 19.0 points±2.7 points) was treated with clomipramine 50-200 mg*d-1,po,bid or tid.Two groups were evaluated by HAMD, HAMA, TESS for 6 wk. RESULTS: The marked effective rate of venlafaxine group and clomipramine group was 84% and 84% respectively (P>0.05) in treating depression symptoms, but the marked effective rate of venlafaxine group and clomipramine group was 92% and 63% respectively (P<0.05) in treating anxiety symptoms. The common adverse reactions of venlafaxine group were nausea (27%), dry mouth (19%), constipation (19%), tremble (12%), asthenia (8%), dizziness (8%) etc. CONCLUSION: Venlafaxine is effective and safe in treating major depression associated with anxiety, and it is superior to clomipramine in reducing anxiety symptoms.
