QUALITATIVE STUDY ON DRUG USE AND SEXUAL BEHAVIORS OF DRUG USERS IN XI'AN

Abstract:Objective: To understand how drug-use and sexual behaviors occurred in drug users. Methods: In-depth interviews were conducted to 46 drug users who took drug detoxification in Chang'an and Beilin detoxification units from October 2001 to June 2002. Results:Of the drug users, 73.9% used drugs by chasing dragon and oral mode and reasons for not injecting included perceiving information on ‘harm of injection’, ‘over-dose death’ or ‘infection with HIV’. Most injecting-drug users often used one-off syringes, but needles were shared at night when needles were scarce. Most drug -abusers had twice or more detoxification experiences, largely because it was difficult for them avoiding contacts with the familiar environment and resisting temptation, and disesteem from social or family members was also the reasons. Except high-risk drug-using behaviors,71.7% and 28.3% hade pre-marital and extra-marital behaviors; the rate of having two or more sexual partners was 71.7% and no mone than 15% used condoms.Conclusion: Though most drug users in Shannxi take drugs by oral mode, they have high-risk drug-injecting behaviors and high-risk sex behaviors.
