Abstract:Objective To quantitatively analyze the intrapulmonary vascular changes in hepatopulmonary syndrome (HPS) with the volume measuring software of 16-slice CT. Methods A total of 44 HPS patients and 51 normal volunteers (controls) were enrolled in this study. CT scan with Siemens Sensation 16 was performed on the patients and the controls. The volume of the intrapulmonary blood vessel on the referenced slice was measured. The vessel volume in the region of interest on a selected slice was measured. The volumes of the intrapulmonary blood vessels in the patients and the controls were compared statistically by using the statistical package SPSS, version 10.0. t-test and linear correlation analysis were used to test the hypothesis. Results The volume of the intrapulmonary blood vessel within a ROI on a referenced slice was (0.620 0±0.277 6) cm 3 in the control group and (1.889 3±1.006 6) cm 3 in the HPS group (P0.01). There was a negative correlation between the arterial partial pressure of oxygen and vessel volume of the region of interest in the HPS group (P0.01, r=-0.82). Conclusion There is a significant difference in vascular volume between the control group and the HPS group. The volume of the HPS group is three times higher than that of the control group. There is a negative correlation between arterial partial pressure of oxygen and vacular volume of lung in the HPS group.
