Abstract:Objective:To observe the changes of serum C-reactive protein (CRP) in patients with essential hypertension(HBP) and to analyze the relationship between C-reactive protein and related clinical markers so as to study the role of inflammation in hypertension. Methods: CRP was measured in 143 patients with essential hypertension and 60 normal controls by immunoturbidimetric assay; at the same time, their fasting blood glucose(FBG),total cholesterol(TC),triglyceride(TG),high density lipoprotein cholesterol(HDL-C),low density lipoprotein cholesterol(LDL-C),leukocyte (WBC) and body mass index(BMI) were also measured. Blood samples were taken in the morning without breakfast. Results: Serum levels of CRP were significantly higher in patients with hypertension than in normal controls (P0.01) and the levels of CRP increased gradually with the increase of blood pressure. There was signficant difference in CRP levels between patients with grade 1 and grade 2 hypertension(P0.05). Leukocyte count was higher in hypertensive group than in control group. CRP level was positively correlated with age,TG and FBG and negatively correlated with HDL-C(P0.05).Conclusion: Inflammation reaction exists in hypertensive patients; the levels of CRP correspondingly reflect the degree of blood pressure. Hypertriglyceridemia and low level of HDL-C may participate in inflammation reaction, so controlling hypertriglyceridemia and increasing HDL-C may relieve inflammation in hypertensive patients.
