Abstract:Elastic buckling of a long double-walled carbon nanotube embedded in an elastic medium and subjected to a far-field hydrostatic pressure is analyzed using the energy method. The study is on the basis of elastic-shell models at nano-scale, and the effect of van der Waals forces on the buckling is considered. The double-walled carbon nanotube is assumed to be thin and the tube is taken to be perfectly bonded to the surrounding medium. Both normal and shear stresses at the outer tube-medium interface are included. The difference between the Poisson's ratio of the tube and that of the elastic medium is taken into account. An expression is derived relating the external pressure to the buckling mode number, from which the critical pressure can be obtained. As a result, the critical pressure is dependent on the inner radius-to-thickness ratio, the material parameters of the elastic medium, and the van der Waals force.

Abstract:Based on the Bernoulli–Euler beam theory, a double-elastic beam model is developed for transverse vibrations of double-walled carbon nanotubes under compressive axial load, which includes the interaction of van der Waals force between the inner and outer tubes and the effect of compressive axial load. Explicit expressions are derived for natural frequencies and associated amplitude ratios of the inner to the outer tubes for the case of simply supported double-walled carbon nanotubes. The influences of compressive axial load on the properties of vibrations are discussed. It is shown that the effects of compressive axial load on the natural frequencies of double-walled carbon nanotubes are sensitive to the vibration modes and aspect ratios. The natural frequencies are dependent on the axial load and decrease with increasing the axial load. However, the associated amplitude ratios of the inner to the outer tubes of double-walled carbon nanotubes are independent of the axial load. In addition, the critical axial buckling stress and strain for simply supported double-walled carbon nanotubes are obtained.
Effect of small length scale on elastic buckling of multi-walled carbon nanotubes under radial pressure

Abstract:A nonlocal multiple-shell model is developed for the elastic buckling of multi-walled carbon nanotubes under uniform external radial pressure on the basis of theory of nonlocal elasticity. The effect of small length scale is incorporated in the formulation. An explicit expression is derived for the critical buckling pressure for a double-walled carbon nanotube. The influence of the small length scale on the buckling pressure is examined. It is concluded that the critical buckling pressure for a carbon nanotube could be overestimated by the classic (local) shell model due to ignoring the effect of small length scale.

Abstract:Based on theory of thermal elasticity mechanics, an elastic multiple column model is developed for column buckling of MWNTs with large aspect ratios under axial compression coupling with temperature change. In this model, each of the nested concentric tubes is regarded as an individual column and the deflection of all the columns is coupled together through the van der Waals interactions between adjacent tubes. The thermal effect is incorporated in the formulation. Following this model, an explicit expression is derived for the critical buckling strain for a double-walled carbon nanotube. The influence of temperature change on the buckling strain is investigated. It is concluded that the effect of temperature change on the buckling strain is dependent on the temperature changes, the aspect ratios, and the buckling modes of carbon nanotubes.

Using continuum mechanics, a multilayer elastic shell model is presented for the torsional buckling of a multiwall carbon nanotube. The value of elastic constant of Winkler-type is derived. Finally, the numerical computation is carried out to estimate the critical buckling torque.

Abstract:Taking into account the effects of surrounding elastic medium and van der Waals forces between the inner and outer nanotubes and using the shell theory in continuum mechanics, the governing equation of carbon nanotube under the action of coupled thermo-mechanical load is established. Based on the model, an explicit formula for the critical load is derived in terms of the buckling modes of the shell and the parameters that indicate the effects of temperature change, surrounding elastic medium and the van der Waals force. Numerical simulation results show that at low and room temperature the critical load for infinitesimal buckling of a double-walled carbon nanotube increases as the value of temperature change increases, while at high temperature the critical load for infinitesimal buckling of a double-walled carbon nanotube decrease as the value of temperature change increases.

Abstract:Large deformation behavior and post-buckling modes of single-walled carbon nanotubes are studied numerically by using traditional continuum shell theory and eigenvalue buckling methodology with elasticity parameters obtained by atomistic methods incorporated. Comparison with molecular mechanics and an atomistic-based continuum membrane method shows that the continuum shell theory is convenient and efficient in predicting the post-buckling behavior of the nanotubes subjected to axial compression, torsion and bend loads, providing that the elasticity parameters of the tube are obtained from atomistic theory. Higher-order buckling modes, which are difficult to be obtained by molecular mechanics, have analyzed as well.

Abstract:The thermal effect on axially compressed buckling of a double-walled carbon nanotube is studied in this paper. The effects of temperature change, surrounding elastic medium and van der Waals forces between the inner and outer nanotubes are taken into account. Using continuum mechanics, an elastic double-shell model with thermal effect is presented for axially compressed buckling of a double-walled carbon nanotube embedded in an elastic matrix under thermal environment. Based on the model, an explicit formula for the critical axial stress is derived in terms of the buckling modes of the shell and the parameters that indicate the effects of temperature change, surrounding elastic medium and the van der Waals forces. Based on that, some simplified analysis is carried out to estimate the critical axial stress for axially compressed buckling of the double-walled carbon nanotube. Numerical results for the general case are obtained for the thermal effect on axially compressed buckling of a double-walled carbon nanotube. It is shown that the axial buckling load of double-walled carbon nanotube under thermal loads is dependent on the wave number of axially buckling modes. Abstract:Using the modified finite element method, the nonlinear shell-spring finite element model is established with taking the van der waals force into account. Based on the B-R motion criterion, the dynamic bucking behaviors of multi-walled carbon nanotubes are examined systemically. The dynamic critical loads for buckling and failure of double-walled carbon nanotubes under axial impact load are obtained. It is shown that in the dynamic buckling process of multi-walled carbon nanotubes, the deformation of each wall is harmonious to each other and the change of interlayer spacing is very small. The magnitude and the duration of impact load as well as the length of carbon nanotube have greater effects on the dynamic buckling of carbon nanotubes. For the shorter carbon nanotubes, asymmetrical buckling mode appears earlier. The simulations further show that the stress wave propagation in carbon nanotubes induces the asymmetrical buckling mode. In the dynamic buckling process of carbon nanotubes, there are four circumferential lobes that can be observed obviously, and their wave crest and trough of the lobes change alternately.

Abstract:An elastic double-shell model is presented for the buckling and postbuckling of a double-walled carbon nanotube subjected to axial compression. The analysis is based on a continuum mechanics model in which each tube of a double-walled carbon nanotube is described as an individual elastic shell and the interlayer friction is negligible between the inner and outer tubes. The governing equations are based on the Karman-Donnell-type nonlinear differential equations. The van der Waals interaction between the inner and outer nanotubes and the nonlinear prebuckling deformations of the shell are both taken into account. A boundary layer theory of shell buckling is extended to the case of double-walled carbon nanotubes under axial compression. A singular perturbation technique is employed to determine the buckling loads and postbuckling equilibrium paths. Abstract:Based on the finite-deformation shell theory for carbon nanotubes established from the interatomic potential and the continuum model for van der Waals (vdW) interactions, we have studied the buckling of double-walled carbon nanotubes subjected to compression or torsion. Prior to buckling, the vdW interactions have essentially no effect on the deformation of the double-walled carbon nanotube. The critical buckling strain of the double-wall carbon nanotubes is always between those for the inner wall and for the outer wall, which means that the vdW interaction decelerates buckling of one wall at the expenses of accelerating the buckle of the other wall.
Combined Torsional Buckling of Double-Walled Carbon Nanotubes with Axial Load in the Multi-Field Coupled Condition

Abstract:The present study has theoretically investigated the combined torsional buckling of double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWCNTs) with axial load in the multi-field coupled condition. The effects of torsion, axial load, thermal-electrical change, surrounding elastic medium and the Van der Waals forces are all taken into consideration. The governing equation of buckling for CNTs subjected to thermo-electro-mechanical loadings has been established based on an elastic shell model of continuum mechanics. Reasonable simplifications are made to get the explicit expression of the critical buckling shear stress of DWCNTs, and numerical experiments are conducted for further research. It is shown that under certain electric and temperature field the critical buckling shear stress of DWCNTs only depends on the wave number of buckling modes. On the other hand, all the related impact factors have enormous influence on the critical buckling shear stress under a certain buckling mode. The critical buckling shear stress changes linearly with the axial-to-shear stress ratio, as well as the thermal and electric change. Axial compression tends to make DWCNTs unstable, while axial tension benefits the buckling stability. The critical buckling shear stress is directly proportional to the applied voltage. At room or lower temperature, the critical shear stress for infinitesimal buckling increases as the temperature change increases, while it decreases at a higher temperature. The conclusions are useful for the design of nano-structures related to the buckling stability of DWCNTs.

Abstract:Based on a continuum elastic double-shell model in which each tube of a double-walled carbon nanotube is described as an individual elastic shell, involving the van der Waals interaction between the inner and outer nanotubes, the governing equations for the buckling and postbuckling behavior of double-walled carbon nanotubes subjected to torsional load are presented based on the Karman–Donnell-type nonlinear differential equations. Applying the boundary-layer theory of shell and employing singular perturbation technique, accurate solutions are obtained to determine the buckling loads and postbuckling equilibrium paths. Through detailed calculations, main postbuckling characteristics, i.e. connections of the angle of twist, axial end-shortening and transverse deflection with applied torque, are clarified for a range of nanotube geometrics. Results reveal that under the torsional load double-walled carbon nanotube has an unstable postbuckling behavior. And it is confirmed that the postbuckling equilibrium path becomes higher when the nanotube becomes thinner.
Dynamic Buckling of Double-Walled Carbon Nanotubes under Step Axial Load

Abstract:An approximate method is presented in this paper for studying the dynamic buckling of double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWNTs) under step axial load. The analysis is based on the continuum mechanics model, which takes into account the van der Waals interaction between the outer and inner nanotubes. A buckling condition is derived, from which the critical buckling load and associated buckling mode can be determined. As examples, numerical results are worked out for DWNTs under fixed boundary conditions. It is shown that, due to the effect of van der Waals forces, the critical buckling load of a DWNT is enhanced when inserting an inner tube into a single-walled one. The paper indicates that the critical buckling load of DWNTs for dynamic buckling is higher than that for static buckling. The effect of the radii is also examined. In addition, some of the results are compared with the previous ones.

Abstract:A modified finite element method is presented and finite element simulations are performed on single-, double- and multi-walled carbon nanotubes to investigate their axially compressive buckling behaviors. The dependence of carbon nanotubes' axial buckling behaviors with respect to their physical dimensions is investigated by prescribing the relations of the critical buckling load and strain to the diameter, length of carbon nanotubes. In addition, the postbuckling responses are obtained for various carbon nanotubes. The simulation results show that larger tube diameter leads to higher buckling load until a stable value is reached, whereas larger tube length and length-to-radius ratio lead to lower buckling axial strains. At the same time, the applicability of the present modified finite element method to carbon nanotubes with various length-to-radius ratios is examined. The more extensive applicability of finite element method is revealed by comparing with the classical elastic shell theory, Euler column buckling theory and molecular dynamics simulation. And finally, the effects of numbers of layers on the buckling loads and axial strains of multi-walled carbon nanotubes are also examined. It is shown that the more layers multi-walled carbon nanotubes have, the higher buckling load is required while the smaller critical axial strain is demanded.

Abstract:This paper investigates the torsional buckling of multi-walled carbon nanotubes under combined axial and radial loadings based on the continuum mechanics model. In particular, an explicit expression is obtained for the torsional buckling of double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWNTs) under combined loadings. Numerical results show that axial tensile stress or internal pressure will make DWNTs resist higher critical shear membrane force, while axial compressive stress or external pressure will lead to a lower critical shear membrane force. Further, for torsional buckling of DWNTs coupling with small axial stress and internal pressure or external pressure, the effect of the axial stress, internal pressure or external pressure on the critical shear membrane force is linear, and the associated buckling wave numbers are unique and the same as that under corresponding pure torque.
Buckling and postbuckling analysis of single-walled carbon nanotubes in thermal environments via molecular dynamics simulation

Abstract:Buckling and postbuckling analysis of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) with (n,n)- and (n,0)-helicity, when acted upon by the destabilizing loads of axial compression, torsion and external pressure, is presented by using molecular dynamics simulation. Based on the interatomic interactions given by Brenner and Lennard–Jones potentials, the molecular dynamics method is used to determine the postbuckling equilibrium paths as well as the variation of strain energy. Temperature changes and van der Waals interaction forces between the opposite walls of SWCNTs are both taken into account. Comprehensive numerical results for armchair (12,12)- and zigzag (21,0)-tubes are presented. The results reveal that the effect of van der Waals interactions on the postbuckling behavior of SWCNTs under axial compression can be negligible, while the additional van der Waals forces will affect the postbuckling equilibrium paths of SWCNTs under torsion and external pressure when the deformation of the tube is sufficiently large. The results also show that the temperature change has a significant effect on the postbuckling response of SWCNTs under axial compression, but it has a small effect in the loading case of torsion. In contrast, it only has a less effect on the postbuckling response of SWCNTs under external pressure.
Elastic Axial Buckling of Carbon Nanotubes Via A Molecular Mechanics Model

Abstract:Based on a molecular mechanics model, analytical solutions for the critical buckling strain of single-walled achiral carbon nanotubes under axial compression are obtained. The results show that zigzag tubes are more stable than armchair tubes with the same diameter. Comparison with the results given by continuum mechanics model shows that the continuum mechanics model underestimates the critical buckling strain for smaller tubes if a Young’s modulus for larger tubes (or for graphene sheets) is adopted. The effect of intertube van der Waals interaction from the inner tube of multi-walled carbon nanotubes on the buckling of the outermost tube is also qualitatively discussed and it is found that the van der Waals interaction has little effect on the critical buckling strain for double-walled carbon nanotubes.
