Abstract:Objective To explore the influence of dietary habits on anorectal symptoms in Chinese adults, providing a scientific basis for the prevention and treatment of anorectal diseases. Methods The participants were urban and rural Chinese permanent residents (living in the current address for 6 months or longer) aged 18 or over. They were recruited from 195 counties of 31 provinces in the mainland of China from March to December 2013.A survey with a self-designed questionnaire named Chinese Adult Common Anorectal Disease Epidemiology Survey was conducted to collect the demographic characteristics, dietary habits, prevalence of anorectal symptoms(prolapsus of anal neoplasm, perianal pain, anal pendant expansion, anal suppuration, hematochezia) in the past 3 months. Results A total of 70 560 residents were recruited, 68 906 of them returned responsive questionnaires, with a response rate of 97.66%.The prevalence of prolapsus of anal neoplasm, perianal pain, anal pendant expansion, anal suppuration, and hematochezia was 14.55%(10 028 cases), 16.53%(11 390 cases),14.98%(10 319 cases),5.88%(4 053 cases) and 22.52%(15 516 cases),respectively. Multivariate Logistic regression analysis showed that residents who only drank water when they were thirsty, infrequently ate vegetables and fruits, often ate spicy food, beef, mutton and dog meat and related products, chicken, duck, goose and other poultry meat and related products, aquatic products and seafood were more likely to suffer from the five anorectal symptoms (P<0.05);those who frequently ate pork and related products presented an increased risk of having perianal pain, anal suppuration and hematochezia(P<0.05).Conclusion The prevalence of anorectal symptoms was high in Chinese adults, which was significantly associated with dietary habits.Drinking enough water, eating enough vegetables and fruits, and moderate amounts of high-fat and high-protein meat, but less or no spicy food may reduce the risk of the occurrence of anorectal symptoms.
