Tunnelled Pleural Catheter Insertions and Intrapleural Administration of Drugs for Malignant Pleural Effusion: a Clinical Control Study

Abstract:Objective To assess the effect and safety of the treatment using a tunneled pleural catheter(TPC) and the intrapleural administration of cisplatin and highly agglutinative staphylococcin for malignant pleural effusion(MPE).Methods Fifty-three patients with moderate or large amount of ipsilateral malignant pleural effusion(MPE) were randomly divided into tunneled pleural catheter group(test group) and thoracentesis group(control group).Cisplatin and highly agglutinative staphylococcin(HASL) were infused into the thoracic cavity of the patients after drainage.Responses were evaluated 30 days later.Results Overall response rate(complete response plus partial response) was 85.19% in test group and 38.46% in control group(P0.01).Improvement rate for the quality of life was 74.07% in test group and 30.77% in control group(P0.01).The side effects in test group were less than that in control group.Conclusion Placement of tunneled pleural catheter for drainage and intrapleural administration of cisplatin and highly agglutinative staphylococcin is an efficacious therapy for patients with malignant pleural effusion.
