Abstract:To investigate the role of interleukin (IL)-10 in the pathogenesis of chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. Serum levels of IL-10 in 44 patients with chronic HCV infection and 30 healthy individuals were determined by enzyme-linked immunoabsorbent assay (ELISA). Serum HCV-RNA levels were determined by quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Serum IL-10 level was significantly increased in patients with chronic HCV infection as compared with that in healthy individuals (P 0.001). The IL-10 levels in patients with chronic HCV infection correlated with their ALT levels (P 0.01). The IL-10 level did not correlate with HCV viral loads. IL-10 level was significantly decreased in patients with HCV associated cirrhosis as compared with that in patients with chronic hepatitis C (P 0.01). [Conclusion] Host IL-10 response may be involved in the pathogenesis of chronic HCV infection and the defect production of IL-10 may be responsible for the progression to cirrhosis in patients with chronic HCV infection.
