Abstract:Objective To understand the nutritional health status of ruralcompulsory education students in Qinghai. Methods In those schools participating in the "rural compulsory education students' nutritional improvement plan" (hereinafter referred to as"plan") in Qinghai Province, which provides different food supply patterns, students in primary and junior high schools were selected randomly to take a height and weight measurement. Results The average height and weight of both male and female students at the age of 6 were higher than those of the average level in national groups at the same age, and except for that, other measurements of teh students were lower than that of national average level. The rate of malnutrition was 17. 76%, with a growth retardation rate of 4. 74% and a weight loss rateof 13. 02%. The rate of overweight and obesity were 5. 18% and 2. 58% respectively with people' s growing older, the prevalence of stunting, emaciation and malnutrition have increased (P < 0. 01), while the rate of overweight and obesity have decreased (P < 0. 01). The rates of emaciation, malnutrition and overweight were higher in boys than in girls (P < 0. 01). The growth retardation and malnutrition rates were higher in the lake areas than in eastern regions (P < 0. 01). Conclusion The urgent problem faced by the rural compulsory education students in Qinghai Province was still the malnutrition. The school canteen meals should be further improved, and abundant supplies of food should be provided. The intervention in malnutrition of lake area students ought to be focused on, the overweight and obesity of primary school students being in particular. A long-term comprehensive intervention mode should be built to improve the students' overall nutritional health status.
