Abstract:Objective To examine the effects of PM2.5 on daily outpatient visits for respiratory disease from 2013 to 2015.Methods The methodological approach utilizes generalized addictive model (GAM)with poisson regression.Individual medical outpatient records(collected from children's hospital),daily air pollution data(collected from Guangzhou Environmental Protection Bureau)and daily meteorological conditions(collected from China Meteorological Science Data Sharing Service)from 2013 to 2015 were used in the analysis.Time trends, temperature, relative humidity and day of week were controlled in the model.Lag effects(lagl ~ lag5) of PM2.5 were estimated as the extra risk (ER and 95% CI) of daily outpatient visits for respiratory disease. Results The mean concentration of PM2.5 from 2013 to 2015 were 53.76 μg/m3,48.55 μg/m3 and 39.72 μg/m3 respectively. The outpatient visits for respiratory disease were 304 271,307 965 and 351 900 from 2013 to 2015.In single-pollutant model, the short-term effects of PM2.5 on daily outpatient visits for respiratory disease was observed in lag0 ~ lag5.An increase of 10 μg/m3 in concentrations of PM2.5 could increase the hospital outpatient visits for respiratory disease by 2.12% (95% CI:1.57% ~ 2.68%) in the lag 2 day. Conclusion Current levels of PM2.5 pollution in Guangzhou are making a significant contribution to daily outpatient visits for respiratory disease.
