Abstract:Objective: To estimate the transmission rate of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) by contaminated blood transfusion and provide information for the prevention of HIV transmission. Method:Twenty-six patients who had received blood transfusion from a donor infected with HIV were investigated and anti-HIV and anti-HCV were tested. Results:Eight of the patients died and 2 were missed. Among the other 16 patients, 15 were infected with HIV and 14 were anti-HCV positive. The transmission rates of HIV and HCV were 93.8%(15/16) and 87.5%(14/16) respectively. One patient’s anti-HIV and HIV-RNA were negative, but anti-HCV and HCV-RNA were positive. Free treatment、training and financial support were provided to all of the patients who infected with HIV. Conclusion: It is necessary to screen HIV-antibody for people who received blood transfusion without testing HIV during 1990’s in highly epidemic area of AIDS. The sceen help people who infected with HIV to get diagnosis、treatment and support earlier and to prevent the further spread of the diseases. There is very great probability to acquire HIV infection through contaminated blood transfusion, but there is exception. Some people may not susceptible to HIV infection. The mechanism needs further study.
