Abstract:Soil samples were collected from 21 fields of river terrace in AiHe Village, JinBao Township, Zhenyuan City, Guizhou, China. The heavy metal ( Cd, Cr, Pb, Zn, and Cu) contents were tested by adop-ting index methods of single factor, comprehensive pollution, geoaccumulation and potential ecological risk to evaluate the pollution and potential risk of soil. The likely source of heavy metal contamination in rice fields of river terrace was estimated by the analysis of heavy metals and their major ingredients. The results showed that the average index of Cd, Cr, Pb, Zn and Cu contents in the valley soil was 0.91, 26.92, 30.45, 298.69 and 16.8mg kg-1, respectively. The arithmetic mean of the comprehensive pollution index was 2.94, indica-ting that the paddy soil in the valley area was moderately polluted. The order of these five heavy metals pollu-tion was Cd>Zn>Pb>Cr>Cu, with Cd categorised as severe pollution, Zn as mild pollution, Pb, Cr and Cu as pollution-free. The order of single ecological risk index of soil heavy metals was Cd>Pb>Zn>Cu>Cr. The comprehensive potential ecological damage index is 152.65, and the ecological risk was at the moderate level. The sources of heavy metals included agricultural transportation, natural activities, industrial pollution and traffic pollution. The levels of Cd, Zn and Cu may be influenced by human factors. Cd may be derived from long-term fertilization. Zn and Cu may be affected by nearby transportation factors. Cr may be related to pre-vious mining activities in the study area. Pb may come from natural factors and soil etc.
