Abstract:The eggs,larvae and adults of Papiliomachaon subsp.venchuanus Moonen were raised and ob-served.Their pupal stage,adult survival time and mating behavior after adult emergence were also examined. Methods for breeding P.machaonvenchuanus Moonen in laboratory or under natural conditions were tested. The results showed that under the conditions of 25℃,RH=70% and L ∶D=1 4 ∶1 0,the average development period and hatching rate of eggs were3.8~3.9 days and 96.3%,respectively.For original host to host feeding in the lab,pupation rate of the original host on fennel was the highest,which up to 86.2%.Under laboratory condition,pupation rate of larvae was relatively high when larvae feed on Foeniculumvulgare Mill,with pu-palperiodabout 9 ~1 1 days between July and September or 1 2~1 3 days between April and May,and the aver-age life of normal adult was 1 0.9 days,while abnormal one with 3.5 days.Mating behavior under natural con-ditioncould occurin the same day when adult emerged,with aduration of 40~50 minutes.In general,breed-ingeggs and pupae of Papiliomachaon was relatively simple,but larvae feeding should consider the favorite host plants and suitable conditions for the development.Additionally,under the condition of indoor rearing,it is still a problem to effectively induce mating and oviposition of the adults.
