Abstract:Agricultural straw and livestock wastewater were the main source of agricultural contaminant, how to reduce, reuse and recycle these wastes has become more and more important. Anaerobic digestion is an attractive technique for bio-waste treatment which can produce biogas and bio-fertilizer. Co-digested two and more wastes is beneficial for anaerobic digestion. By this way, we can not only get more biogas, but also reduce the investment of biogas plant. Two or more agricultural wastes were converted to biogas in one anaerobic bioreactor. Although much work has been done on anaerobic co-digestion of two or more bio-wastes, but most work was done with batch model and there was no report on anaerobic co-digestion of agricultural straw and livestock wastewater. In pig farming, swine wastewater is the main contaminant and is generated every day, so swine wastewater must be added to the anaerobic digester daily, which means that we must use semi-continuous feeding bioreactor in a pig farm biogas plant. In this study, the feasibility of straw-bed anaerobic bioreactor (SAB) was investigated. In the straw-bed bioreactor, baling straw was used as the stationary phase and swine wastewater was used as the mobile phase, and a wastewater advanced anaerobic bioreactor (USR) was connected to the posterior of the straw-bed bioreactor. The results showed that the straw-bed anaerobic digestion system (SADS) was feasible and there was no significant difference between co-digestion and mono-digestion of straw and swine wastewater. The total solid biogas yield of straw of SAB and mono-digestion were 394.96 and 382.11 mL/g, respectively. Compared to mono-digestion, the stability of daily biogas yield and average methane content of co-digestion was improved significantly. The average methane content of SADS, baling straw and swine wastewater digested alone were 57.40%, 47.32% and 60.37%, respectively. The volumetric biogas production was also improved significantly and the volumetric biogas production of treatment of baling straw and swine wastewater digested alone were 69.42% and 66.94% to that of SADS. After 35 days reaction, air permeability of baling straw was decreased which leading to more serious floating of baling straw and short flow of influent. After that, COD content of effluent increased sharply and then maintained at higher level. Meanwhile daily biogas yield of wastewater advanced anaerobic bioreactor increased sharply. Therefore, it is necessary to connect a wastewater advanced anaerobic bioreactor to the posterior of straw-bed bioreactor in order to deep purification of effluent of SAB. The above results indicated that co-digested baling straw and swine wastewater in straw-bed anaerobic digestion system is feasible and is beneficial for biogas production.
Sustainable Landfill Technologies For Municipal Solid Wastes In China

Abstract:About 90% of municipal solid wastes (153 million tons in 2007) are filled in landfills, which have great potential stability and pollution problems, in China. Sustainable technologies are attended to solve these problems and improve the landfill performance. These technologies can reduce landfill area through centralization and large-scale landfilling. High-performance collection and control measures of leachate and landfill gas are developed to reduce landfill pollution loading. The biodegradation process of solid waste is accelerated to increase landfill capacity. The concept of. Systems engineering. is implemented in design, operation and management of landfills to achieve a higher performance. This paper presents primary research works of mainland China in the sustainable landfill technologies, including solid-liquid-gas interaction, temporal and special variation of waste engineering properties, and control of leachate, gas, stability and pollution. Finally, aspects worthy of further research are addressed.

Abstract:The rising of scale swine farm and lag of excrement and sewage disposal make the pollution of environment more and more seriously; Therefore, how to settle the problem has being a hot gambit. It is possible that improve animal's nutrient utilization efficiency and decrease excretion quantity of animal metabolic ordure through methods of nutrition. But the excretion quantity of animal ordure is still greatly overtopped endurance ability of environment. So it may be strengthened overall disposal of ordure. The article mainly reviews the recent general situation of feces and sewage treatment and reutilization on intensive scaled swine farms.

Abstract:Purpose of ReviewOrganic solid wastes (OSWs) have great potential for resourceful applications. However, individual treatment technologies are difficult to effectively recover their resources. This review aims to describe the development of solid-state anaerobic digestion (SS-AD), digestate aerobic composting, and their hybrid technology (SSADAC) for OSWs treatment to maximize resource recovery from OSWs.Recent FindingsSSADAC exhibits high potential for OSW treatment in energy and nutrient recovery. As individual treatment technologies, SS-AD and digestate composting recover energy and nutrients in terms of methane and compost, respectively. However, some deficiencies of these individual treatment technologies are hard to be ignored, such as energy loss and liquid digestate/leaching discharge. SSADAC can alleviate these issues with fully synergizing the characteristics of two treatment units for multi-target products. Thus, recent studies have proposed that the regulation of digestion duration can improve SSADAC performance, and other potential methods can also improve the value of SSADAC, such as raw material regulation and exogenous additives, to achieve zero waste discharge and maximum resource recovery.SummaryThis review presents the applications of SS-AD and digestate composting for OSW treatment and illustrates the development and potential improvements of SSADAC as an integrated process. Key issues and their potential counter-measurements were displayed to provide the further development of SSADAC.

Abstract:As the world's largest developing country, China must face the problem of managing municipal solid waste, and the challenge of organic waste disposal is even more serious. Considering the characteristics of traditional waste disposal technologies and the subsequent secondary pollution, anaerobic digestion has various advantages such as reduction in the land needed for disposal and preservation of environmental quality. In light of the energy crisis, this paper focuses on the potential production of biogas from biowaste through anaerobic digestion processes, the problems incurred by the waste collection system, and the efficiency of the anaerobic digestion process. Use of biogas in a combined heat and power cogeneration system is also discussed. Finally, the advantages of anaerobic digestion technology for the Chinese market are summarized. The anaerobic digestion is suggested to be a promising treating technology for the organic wastes in China.

Abstract:The authors analyzed the influence of waste management philosophy under sustainable development principle and development of key regulations and technical guidelines such as landfill directive and packaging directive of European Commission to the waste treatment method in developed countries,and discussed the development of some of kernel waste treatment technologies including waste incineration,mechanical-biological treatment,gasification and landfill.The authors suggested that China should actively develop eco-technologies in waste treatment and the central government should supply economic support and policy guidance to these technologies and formulate sustainable waste management strategy so as to change the present passive situation of end-of-pipe treatment.

Abstract:The effective conversion and recycling of organic solid waste contribute to the resolution of widespread issues such as global environmental pollution, energy scarcity and resource depletion. The anaerobic fermentation technology provides for the effective treatment of organic solid waste and the generation of various products. The analysis, which is based on bibliometrics, concentrates on the valorisation of affordable and easily accessible raw materials with high organic matter content as well as the production of clean energy substances and high value-added platform products. The processing and application status of fermentation raw materials such as waste activated sludge, food waste, microalgae and crude glycerol are investigated. To analyse the status of the preparation and engineering applications of the products, the fermentation products biohydrogen, VFAs, biogas, ethanol, succinic acid, lactic acid, and butanol are employed as representatives. Simultaneously, the anaerobic biorefinery process with multiple product co-production is sorted out. Product co-production can reduce waste discharge, enhance resource recovery efficiency, and serve as a model for improving anaerobic fermentation economics.

Abstract:Anaerobic digestion is widely used in bioenergy recovery from waste. In this study, a half-submerged, integrated, two-phase anaerobic reactor consisting of a top roller acting as an acidogenic unit and a recycling bottom reactor acting as a methanogenic unit was developed for the codigestion of wheat straw (WS) and fruit/vegetable waste (FVW). The reactor was operated for 21 batches (nearly 300 d). Anaerobic granular sludge was inoculated into the methanogenic unit. The residence time for the mixed waste was maintained as 10 d when the operation stabilized, and the temperature was kept at 35 degrees C. The highest organic loading rate was 1.37 kg VS/(m(3) d), and the maximum daily biogas production was 328 L/d. Volatile solid removal efficiencies exceeded 85%. WS digestion could be confirmed, and efficiency was affected by both the ratio of WS to FVW and the loading rate. The dominant bacteria were Bacteroides-like species, which are involved in glycan and cellulose decomposition. Methanogenic community structures, pH levels, and volatile fatty acid concentrations in the acidogenic and methanogenic units differed, indicating successful phase separation. This novel reactor can improve the mass transfer and microbial cooperation between acidogenic and methanogenic units and can efficiently and steady codigest solid waste. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:In Japan,anaerobic sewage sludge digestion began in 1932,and is now used in over 300 sewage treatment plants with a total digester volume of 210×104 m3.Over 300 upflow anaerobic sludge bed(UASB) and expanded granular sludge bed(EGSB) full-scale plants are now in operation for the treatment of industrial wastewaters with high concentration from beer,soft drink,liquor,food and chemicals production.The applications and parameters of anaerobic digestion technologies in Japan for organic wastewater and organic wastes treatment are summarized.Recent developments of anaerobic digestion technologies including anaerobic membrane bioreactor,hydrogen-methane fermentation and biological desulfurization of biogas are introduced.

Abstract:The facultative anaerobic and strict anaerobic microorganisms enriched and acclimated during the anaerobic digestion process are crucial for the efficiency of the anaerobic digestion system. Most of the problems encountered during running anaerobic digestion processes could be effectively improved via stimulation of microbial metabolic activity. Benefited from the rapid development of microbiome techniques, deeper insights into the microbial diversity in anaerobic digestion systems, e.g. the microbe-microbe interactions and microbe-environment interactions, have been gained. A complex and intricate metabolic network exists in the anaerobic digestion system of solid organic wastes. However, little is known about these interactions and the underlying mechanisms. This review briefly summarized the representative interactions between microbial communities during anaerobic digestion process discovered to date. In addition, typical issues encountered during the anaerobic digestion of solid organic wastes and how microbes can tackle and alleviate these issues were discussed. Finally, future priorities on microbiome research were proposed based on present contribution of microbiome analysis in anaerobic digestion system.

Abstract:Organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW) has high volatile solid and moisture content, which is mainly treated via anaerobic digestion (AD). Since the composition of OFMSW is complicated and inconstant, it is difficult to maintain the AD process stable and effective. In this study, a novel two-stage AD system, including a tank-type acidogenic phase and a fixed-bed methanogenic phase, was implemented for OFMSW treatment to demonstrate the feasibility of the two-stage configuration. Results showed that 84% of potential CH4 yield was achieved and the methane content reached 77.83% on average in methanogenic phase. The acetoclastic methanogens, Methanosaeta and Methanosarcina, which can participate in direct interspecies electron transfer, were the dominant genera in solid digestate and the biofilm. The hydrogenotrophic methanogens, Meth-anospirillum and Methanoculleus, accounted for high proportions in liquid digestate. Our study provides a novel approach to treat OFMSW with less water consumption, high stability and efficiency.

Abstract:Anaerobic digestion, which could transform organic wastes to biological natural gas, emerged from the discovery of biogas. It is drawing mounting attention due to its pollution treatment and energy recovery. The realization and advancement of anaerobic digestion depends on the development of technology and basic theory. Therefore, this paper will describe current mainstream anaerobic digestion technologies through configurations and theories. Firstly, we summarize the current mainstream anaerobic digestion technologies, introduce their design and configuration, and discuss the internal improvement and transformation. The sludge-water separation distinguishes the first and second anaerobic digestion technologies while granular sludge develops the third anaerobic digestion technology. Secondly, we describe the anaerobic digestion theory, and explain its role in anaerobic digestion revolution and also provide some improvement strategies. The design and operation of anaerobic digestion technology are greatly improved by the understanding of anaerobic digestion theory and discovery of interspecific electron transfer. Then, we introduce some emerging technologies and theories which will strongly promote anaerobic digestion. Machine learning will help unravel the complex black box of anaerobic digestion while synthetic biology will redefine anaerobic digestion. Finally, we discuss the future anaerobic digestion technology. The anaerobic digestion will be more efficient, intelligent and customized. In the future, it will become a green platform to complete the social cycle of energy and substance.

Abstract:An innovative integrated two-phase anaerobic digestion technology for agricultural wastes was investigated. The performance of this new technology treating wheat straw, fruit and vegetable wastes was conducted at mesophilic condition. Anaerobic granular sludge was used as inocula. The reactor had been operated continuously for 25 periods. The largest volatile solids load in the reactor was 1.47 kg·(m3·d)-1. The soluble chemical oxygen demand removal rate achieved 85%, and the methane production yield achieved 0.48 m3 (standard condition) per kilogram volatile solids. The maximum daily gas production rate, the acidification rate and volatile solids removal efficiency achieved 3.03 m3·(m3·d)-1 (standard condition), 58% and 85%, respectively. The process can effectively achieve solid-liquid separation of materials, improvement of mass transfer efficiency, and difficulty producing scum. And it can increase the concentration of anaerobic microorganisms by the separation of solid retention time, hydraulic retention time and microbes stay time.

Abstract:The increasing global population and urbanization have led to a pressing need for effective solutions to manage the organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW). High-solids anaerobic digestion (HS-AD) has garnered attention as a sustainable technology that offers reduced water demand and energy consumption, and an increased biogas production rate. However, challenges such as rheology complexities and slow mass transfer hinder its widespread application. To address these limitations, this review emphasizes the importance of process optimization and the mass transfer enhancement of HS-AD, and summarizes various strategies for enhancing mass transfer in the field of HS-AD for the OFMSW, including substrate pretreatments, mixing strategies, and the addition of biochar. Additionally, the incorporation of innovative reactor designs, substrate pretreatment, the use of advanced modeling and simulation techniques, and the novel conductive materials need to be investigated in future studies to promote a better coupling between mass transfer and methane production. This review provides support and guidance to promote HS-AD technology as a more viable solution for sustainable waste management and resource recovery.

Abstract:Anaerobic digestion of agricultural wastes has been widely applied to recover renewable energy from wastes. To improve biogas production, an innovative integrated two-phase anaerobic was designed, and applied to co-digestion of wheat straw and fruit/vegetable waste. The highest organic loading rate in this reactor was 0.87 kgVS/(m 3 ·d), the maximum rate of daily biogas production achieved 2.80 Nm 3 /(m 3 ·d), and the VS removal efficiency achieved above 85%. In the performance of the reactor, the digestion of wheat straw could be confirmed, and the results of pH value and VFA concentration indicated that different operational conditions could be provided in acidogenic unit and methanogenic unit.

Abstract:Anaerobic digestion is a prevailing technology for the treatment and utilization of municipal organic solid waste (MOSW). In this technology, the macromolecular organic matter in waste degrades into small molecular substances through the anaerobic decomposition of microorganisms, producing biogas that can provide enormous energy. This paper focuses on the research progress of anaerobic digestion of various organic wastes for biogas production. The principle and process of anaerobic digestion for biogas production are introduced, along with the key factors affecting anaerobic digestion efficiency, such as temperature, pH, and sealing conditions. At the same time, the current cycle treatment technology and comprehensive treatment system of MOSW are also summarized. Furthermore, the paper explores biogas purification technologies, including desulfurization, deoxidation, drying, and decarbonization. Finally, the state-of-the-art of the utilization of MOSW for biogas production in the world and the problems faced by the utilization of MOSW for biogas production in China are reviewed. By summarizing the anaerobic digestion technology of MOSW, this review hopes to provide some reasonable solutions for the high-value utilization of MOSW.
