Abstract:Based on the traditional intercropping, the maize-soybean relay intercropping system significantly improves land equivalent ratio and increases soybean production without reducing corn output. It has developed rapidly in the southwest of China. However, under this pattern, the competition for limited light resource can resulted in shade avoidance response in soybean. Most of all,the ratio of Red:Far Red (R:FR) reduced under the maize-soybean relay intercropping system.Furthermore, the light interception of soybean decreased significantly, and those made soybean show typical shade response phenotypes including longer and thinner hypocotyl, smaller leaf area, longer petious and thinner leaves, and prone to lodging. The phenotypes remarkably constrained the yield and quality improvement of intercropping soybean system.Consequently,it is important to investigate and understand the physiological and molecular mechanisms underlying soybean responses to shade stress. The cultivation of shade tolerant soybean varieties had theoretical and practical significance for guiding intercropping and interplanting soybean production. In this updated review,we summarized the recent progresses about the effect of shade stress on diverse agronomy traits, photosynthesis and lodging in soybean, and expressed the responsiveness of soybean to shade stress at physiological and molecular levels. This review will provide major directions for future research in this field.
