Abstract:Root growth and transpiration efficiency were researched with alternative split-root osmotic stress on maize seedling in Hoagland solution. Half of roots were exposed in Hoagland and the other half in Hoagland+PEG. After 24 h, the half root in Hoagland+PEC was returned to Hoagland. Results showed that more new secondary roots grew on stressed half roots after 4-5 days. ABA concentration in the half roots increased, stomatal aperture and leaf transpiration was reduced substantially and transpiration efficiency rose; stomatal conductance decreased by exogenous ABA and osmotic stress which proved that exogenous and endogenous ABA of roots can control stomatal opening. These conclusions further verified that controlled divided-root alternate irrigation (CRAI) is an effective water-saving method.
