Abstract:Ghrelin,a novel 28-amino-acid peptide purified from rat and human stomachs,is the endogenous ligand for the growth hormone secretagogue receptor(GHS-R) and has strong growth hormone-releasing activity.Ghrelin displays the physiological effects through the binding with GHS-R in the hypothalamus and pituitary.Functionally,ghrelin not only increases the GH release,but also is related to body growth,appetite,food intake,energy metabolism,and gastric acid secretion.This review summarized recent developments on structure,distribution,biological functions of ghrelin as well as its potential application in animal husbandry.
