Abstract:Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) are a kind of fungus widely distributed in soil. They can infect most plant roots and form symbiotic association-arbuscular mycorrhizae. In order to explore ecological adaptability and reconstruction potential of mycorrhizal mulberry under drought and flood stress conditions in rocky desertification areas and riparian zones, mulberry saplings inoculated with Gigaspora rosea and the non-inoculated ones of consistent growth were transplanted into the rocky desertification areas and hydro-fluctuation belts in the southwest of China. The investigation on ecological adaptability and agronomic phenotype of mulberry saplings were carried continuously for 2 years. The results showed that the colonization rate of inoculated mulberry saplings was 1.5 times higher than that of non-inoculated ones.Agronomic phenotypes such as maximum length of branches, stem diameter, and length of the 5th leaf of inoculated mulberry samplings were all superior to those of non-inoculated ones. And the mycorrhizal dependency (MD) of vegetative growth was all over 100%.In addition, the contents of chlorophyll and osmosis substances (proline, soluble sugar and soluble protein),and the leaf protective enzyme (SOD,POD and CAT) activity were significantly higher than those of contrasts. The above results showed that AM fungi improved the tolerance of mulberry saplings to drought and waterlogging stress by increasing the osmotic adjustment substance content and the protective enzyme activity in mulberry leaves, and promoted the vegetative growth of mulberry seedlings by increasing chlorophyll content. Therefore, the application of mycorrhizal mulberry biotechnology is an important measure to promote ecological restoration and reconstruction of rocky desertification areas of southwest Karst area and riparian zones of the Three Gorges Reservoir.
