Abstract:The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of adding maize meal,L.amylovorus inoculants and the mixtures of them on the fermentation quality of alfalfa silage. The experiment was conducted by 4 (maize meal)×4 (inoculants) factorial design, with 3 replications,in which the levels of maize meal addition were respectively at 0%,3%,6% and 9% on fresh matter basis respectively, and the inoculants were respectively distilled water,L.amylovorus KM112088 (L1),L.amylovorus KM112091 (L2) and L.amylovorus KM112089 (L3).The results showed the contents of DM and WSC in the alfalfa were low,so the fermentation quality of the fresh alfalfa was poor after 35 days ensiling.Due to the starch content of alfalfa was also at a low level (only 1.18%),the addition of L.amylovorus still could not significantly improve the fermentation quality of alfalfa silage, and only the group inoculated with L2 had significantly lower (P<0.05) pH and ammonia-N (NH3-N) content. In the groups treated by maize meal,pH and the content of NH3-N and acetic acid were significantly (P<0.05) lower than that in control silages, and there was a significant (P<0.05) decrease in above mentioned parameters with the increased maize meal concentration. However, the content of starch in them was significantly (P<0.05) higher than that in the silages treated by the mixture of maize meal and L.amylovorus.Meanwhile,there was a significant (P<0.05) difference in the content of starch among the silages treated by different L.amylovorus strains, and L2 showed the highest ability to break down starch. Moreover,pH and the content of acetic acid and NH3-N in the silage treated by the mixtures of L3 and maize meal were signifantly (P<0.05) higher than the corresponding groups treated by other L.amylovorus strains, and the content of lactic acid and the ratio of lactic acid to acetic acid in the former were signifantly (P<0.05) lower than the latter. In conclusion, adding the mixtures of L.amylovorus and maize meal could not only improve the fermentation quality of alfalfa but also decrease the addition of maize meal. So,the mixtures of them might be a cheap and convenient additive in the practices of making alfalfa silage.
