Abstract:The 40 sampling sites were distributed along the Lijiang River,Guangxi,China,including its mainstream and tributaries,as well as conjoined lakes,isolated ponds and near-shore water wells.The collected samples consisted of 112 water samples,40 bottom mud samples,40 aquatic plants and 40 near-shore soil samples.They were collected in arid season and rainy season respectively during two hydrologic years,and some parameters,such as water temperature,electrical conductivity and pH value,were measured on site in the field.The determination of different mercury species in bottom muds were carried out by using the sequential extraction method.The results indicated that the mean values of Hg contents in the mainstream are 0.12 μg /L in water,0.20 μg /g in bottom mud,and 0.032 μg /g in float grass;while the mean Hg contents in main tributaries are higher than those in the mainstream,with values of 0.15-0.23 μg / L in water,0.38-1.7 μg / g in bottom mud,and 0.028-0.044 μg / g in float grass,respectively.In addition,the Hg concentrations in bottom mud are higher thanthose in near-shore soil.An obvious relationship was shown among the Hg contents in river water,bottom mud and float grass,i.e.the Hg contents increase from upriver to downriver both in the mainstream and tributaries,and the mercury contents in the downriver water are 1.5-5 times higher than those in the upriver water.Correspondingly,the conductivity and pH values of river water,as reference indices of heavy metal ion pollution,also increase from the upriver water to the downriver water.The mercury contents of river water in the rainy season(May to June,0.12-0.28 μg /L) are considerably higher than those in arid season(September to November,0.091-0.28 μg / L).In different cross sections of the river,the mercury contents in the near-shore well water are lower than those in the river water.The order of Hg concentration in species in sediments was as follows: residual form bio-refractory organic matter-bound form humic acid-bound form carbonate-and Fe /Mn oxide-bound form exchangeable form easily biodegraded organic matter-bound form soluble form.Based on the above data,it could be concluded that the largest sink of Hg contamination of Guilin city was contributed to the mainstream of Lijiang River.According to environmental quality standards for surface water(GB3838-2002),water quality of the Lijiang River reached the grade IV standard in terms of Hg content(≤ 1 μg / L).The Hg pullution in tributaries was more serious than that in mainstream,which posed a great risk of pollution to the mainstream.
