Abstract:Insects are not only the most species-rich group on Earth, they also play numerous crucial roles in ecosystem functioning and the global economy. The conservation of insect diversity is therefore a topic of global importance. However, insects are mostly ignored by research; for example, relationships between insect diversity and vegetation or climate change remain widely unknown. This paper makes suggestions for further research into insect diversity patterns based on two typical forest types in northern China: Changbai Mountain, northeast China and Dongling Mountain, central northern China. Plants and climate have been well studied in these areas but substantial knowledge gaps prevail in relation to insect diversity patterns. It is therefore important to investigate insect biodiversity patterns in these regions.

Abstract:Chemical pesticides play crucial roles in the management of crop diseases and pests. However, excessive and irrational use of pesticides has become a major concern and obstacle to sustainable agriculture. As a result, the quality and security of agricultural products are reduced, and the ecological and environmental integrities are threatened. Recently, environment-friendly pest management measures have been introduced and adopted to manage rice insect pests and reduce the use of insecticides. This paper reviewed the advancements in development and application of non-chemicaltechnologies for insect pest management during rice production in China.

Abstract:AbstractInsecta is the biggest group of animals on earth. The insects are thought to be one of the biggest biological resources that have not been fully exploited by humans. China is one of the earliest countries to exploit insect resources in the world and has been the top producer for over one thousand years of many insect‐related industrial products, such as silk, insect wax and Chinese gallnuts. The exploitation and industrialization of insect resources in China is generally classified into four different levels. The first level is the direct utilization of insect bodies and their secretions, the history of which can be traced back for thousands of years. This level includes the culture and utilization of the silkworm Bombyx mori, the Chinese honeybee Apis cerana cerana, the Chinese white‐wax scale Ericerus pela, the Chinese gall aphid Schlechtendalia chinensis, and the lac insects Kerria spp. Additionally, numerous other insects are typically used for Chinese traditional medicines and food, such as Eupolyphaga sinensis, Opisthoplatia orientalis, Aspongopus chinensis, Martianus dermestoides, Polyrhachis vicina, Hepialus spp, Vespa, Hydrillodes repugnalis, and Tenebrio molitor. Pollinators (Megachile rotundata, Osmia cornifrons, O. excavata) and ornamental insects like butterflies, katydids Gampsocleis grafiosa, and fighting crickets Scapsipedes micado are also among the insects included in this level. Accordingly, a related industry is insect‐breeding, including sericulture and apiculture, which lays the basis for all insect industrialization. The second level is the utilization of insects as enemies of pests and insect pathogens for biological control. The enemy insects, including the egg parasites tricogramma Trichogramma spp, the seven spotted lady beetle Coccinella septempunctata, the Chinese green lacewing Chrysopa sinica, and Anastatus sp. could be produced in large scale. The insect pathogens that have been extensively used for commercial biocontrol in China include Helicoverpa armigera Nucleopolyhedrovirus (HaSNPV), Ectropis oblique Nucleopolyhedrovirus (EcobNPV), Spodoptera exigua multicapsid nucleopolyhedrovirus (SeMNPV), Autographa californica multicapsid nucleopolyhedrovirus (AcMNPV), Plutella xylostella Granulosis (PxGV), Pieris rapae granulosis (PiraGV), and Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt). Related industries include the biopesticide industry and the enemy insect production industry. The third level of utilization is the extraction and synthesis of insect materials with diverse bioactivities. Some insect pheromones and hormones extracted from insect bodies or chemically synthesized have been used for insect pest control and for regulating the silkworm breeding. Toxins from honeybees and wasps have been used in medicine. Some insect materials from the larvae of honeybees, silkworms, tasar silkworms, and houseflies have been developed into health products. The fourth level is using the insects as bioreactors to produce peptides for medical and veterinary uses. Hundreds of foreign genes have been successfully expressed in the insect cells and larvae. The hGM‐CSF expressed in silkworm pupae is commercially available. In this article, we review the culture and utilization of important industrial insects in China.
Status of Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agricultural in China (Ⅱ)

Abstract:Over a decade,the Chinese government has attached great importance to the conservation and utilization of plant genetic resources for food and agriculture(PGRFA).According to 20 priority fields described in the Global Plan of Action for the Conservation and Sustainable Utilization of Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture(GPA),the Chinese government has formulated and perfected a series of regulations and laws,meanwhile,the management for plant genetic resources has strengthened.Through training and popularization of scientific knowledge related to genetic resources,the public awareness has been promoted.By the international cooperation and establishment of collaborative networks,it has promoted the exchanges of information,prefessionals and materials.Through the implementation of various national programmes and projects,the conservation system for plant genetic resources has been established and improved gradually to achieve the objectives of safe conservation and sustainable use of plant genetic resources,which has played a great role in plant breeding and food security in both China and the world.(1)A systematic survey and cataloguing for main grain crops and wild species of crops has been undertaken.Totally 116 in situ conservation sites,including wild rice,wild soybean,wild relatives of wheat and wild vegetables etc.has been established.In addition,other 30 in situ conservation sites have been put in plan for construction.Rapid extinction of wild plant genetic resources has been controlled effectively.(2)China has established a long-term national genebank,one national duplication genebank,ten medium-term national gene banks,29 medium-term provincial genebanks and 32 national gemplasm nurseries(including two in vitro seedling banks).In addition,other seven germplasm nurseries are in building.Thus,a sound system for conservation of national plant genetic resources has been basically formed.Totally 3970673 accessions of plant genetic resources has been preserved in the long-term genebank and the germplasm nurseries.(3)A total of 286604 accessions of plant genetic resources were multiplied and regenerated in the past ten years,which has enriched the medium-term genebanks and significantly increased the distribution ability of plant genetic resources to breeders and researchers.Only in 2001-2007,132000 accessions of germplasm resources were provided to 2650 institutions in China.(4)With the investment of 180 million RMB from the State,the National Key Facility of Crop Gene Resources And Genetic Improvement was established in 2003,which provides a excellent platform for genotyping and gene discovery of plant genetic resources.(5)Through in-depth characterization and evaluation of plant genetic resources,a great number of elite germplasm have been screened out and used in the development of new plant varieties widely used in production,leading to the effective increase of the utilization efficiency of plant genetic resources.Meanwhile,through intercropping and rotation between different kinds of crops and mix-cropping of different varieties,the diversity of varieties has been conserved and the damages caused by diseases,pests and weeds have been reduced.(6)By strengthening the management for plant genetic resources,the objectives of sharing the plant genetic resources in the country and expanding the exchanges with foreign countries have been achieved,greatly contributing to food security in both China and the world,rapid development of national economy,and increase of the farmers' income.Although China has gained remarkable achievements in conservation and utilization of plant genetic resources,there still exist a number of challenges.China needs to strengthen the cooperation with other countries and international organizations,to acquire plant genetic resources and relevant technologies from abroad,to continue the survey,exploration and collecting of plant genetic resources,especially for wild plant genetic resources and landraces which are grown in remote areas of the country,to further establish and perfect conservation systems for plant genetic resources.Therefore,we should systemetically characterize and evaluate plant genetic resources conserved and provide them for the use.The sharing of genetic resources and benefits should be further improved to promote the utilization efficiency of genetic resources in China.
Advances in the research on invasive insects in China

Abstract:With the rapid development of economic globalization, invasive species have become a far-reaching global issue. Impacts of invasive insects on agriculture, forestry, ecology, socio-economy and human health are becoming increasingly serious and cause for concern. In this paper, we introduce advances in theoretical and applied research on 14 invasive insects in China and summarize novel theory, methods and recent progress. Perspectives and directions for future research on invasive insects are discussed. The results provide new insights for the early warning, prevention, detection, monitoring, management, and control, of invasive insects.

Abstract:Insects have more species than any other class of animal and play an important role in ecosystems but are often overlooked in biodiversity conservation.There is empirical evidence that many species of insects are declining,even going extinct.Lack of recognition is the major reason for neglecting insect conservation and habitat destruction is the major reason for insect extinction.Due to the distinctive life-history characteristics of insects,insect conservation strategies need to be very different from those designed for vertebrate animals.Insect biodiversity conservation can also be compatible with human activities.

Abstract:The chemical pesticides have played important roles in controlling pests,reducing the hazards and ensuring food security,while long-term irrational use of chemicals resulted in many disadvantages such as 3R problem (Resistance,Residue and Resurgence).This paper reviewed the research and application technologies of ‘Green Plant Protection’ on pest management in paddy fields in China based on reducing the initial population size of rice insect pests,decreasing population growth rate of rice insect pests,increasing environmental resistance to insect pests in rice-based ecosystem,application of biological control agents and chemical control for emergency.A suitable green control technology system should be set up in different places by selection of different technologies based on local conditions,climatic conditions and characteristics of rice pests.Then,it is encouraged to promote the application of the suitable green control technology system with demonstration area construction and multiform,multi-level training to cater to the aim of reduction in chemical insecticide use and damage by rice insect pests.

Abstract:The International Crop Science Congress (ICSC) is a regularly held event allowing crop scientists to integrate current knowledge into a global context and international applications. The 7th ICSC was held on August 14–19, 2016 in Beijing, China, with the theme “Crop Science: Innovation and Sustainability”. As a companion production for this great congress, the nine papers collected in this special issue feature important fields of crop science in China. This editorial first briefly introduces the 7th ICSC, followed by a brief discussion of the current status of, constraints to, and innovations in Chinese agriculture and crop science. Finally, the main scientific points of the papers published in this special issue are surveyed, covering important advances in hybrid rice breeding, minor cereals, food legumes, rapeseed, crop systems, crop management, cotton, genomics-based germplasm research, and QTL mapping. In a section describing future prospects, it is indicated that China faces a full transition from traditional to modern agriculture and crop science.
Geographical patterns and determinants of insect biodiversity in China

Abstract:Insects play important roles in the maintenance of ecosystem functioning and the provision of livelihoods for millions of people. However, compared with terrestrial vertebrates and angiosperms, such as the giant panda, crested ibis, and the metasequoia, insect conservation has not attracted enough attention, and a basic understanding of the geographical biodiversity patterns for major components of insects in China is lacking. Herein, we investigated the geographical distribution of insect biodiversity across multiple dimensions (taxonomic, genetic, and phylogenetic diversity) based on the spatial distribution and molecular DNA sequencing data of insects. Our analysis included 18 orders, 360 families, 5,275 genera, and 14,115 species of insects. The results revealed that Southwestern and Southeastern China harbored higher insect biodiversity and numerous older lineages, representing a museum, whereas regions located in Northwestern China harbored lower insect biodiversity and younger lineages, serving as an evolutionary cradle. We also observed that mean annual temperature and precipitation had significantly positive effects, whereas altitude had significantly negative effects on insect biodiversity in most cases. Moreover, cultivated vegetation harbored the highest insect taxonomic and phylogenetic diversity, and needleleaf and broadleaf mixed forests harbored the highest insect genetic diversity. These results indicated that human activities may positively contribute to insect spatial diversity on a regional scale. Our study fills a knowledge gap in insect spatial diversity in China. These findings could help guide national-level conservation plans and the post-2020 biodiversity conservation framework.

Abstract:Background & Aims: We reviewed progress on insect biodiversity research over the past 30 years and further analyzed the trends, focusing on varied study systems (e.g.forest, grassland and agriculture etc.) and important functional insect groups, such as pollinators, herbivores and predators.Progresses: Declines of insect abundance and diversity are being reported worldwide.Anthropogenic disturbance, climate change, and other factors contribute to this crisis.Strategies & Prospects: Studies of insect biodiversity have expanded from early comparisons of species richness on composition to multiple dimensions of diversity.Current studies include both in-depth work on morphological diversity and much deeper consideration of genetic, phylogenetic, and functional diversity.Moreover, the studies' scale has expanded from local to global.The development of morphometrics and phylogenetic bioinformatics further contributes to understanding evolution and global patterns in diversity.We also need to pay more attention to topics on integrative taxonomy on functional insect groups, functional diversity, insect diversity within canopy, and species interaction networks.
Butterfly Conservation in China: From Science to Action

Abstract:About 10% of the Earth's butterfly species inhabit the highly diverse ecosystems of China. Important for the ecological, economic, and cultural services they provide, many butterfly species experience threats from land use shifts and climate change. China has recently adopted policies to protect the nation's biodiversity resources. This essay examines the current management of butterflies in China and suggests various easily implementable actions that could improve these conservation efforts. Our recommendations are based on the observations of a transdisciplinary group of entomologists and environmental policy specialists. Our analysis draws on other successful examples around the world that China may wish to consider. China needs to modify its scientific methodologies behind butterfly conservation management: revising the criteria for listing protected species, focusing on umbrella species for broader protection, identifying high priority areas and refugia for conservation, among others. Rural and urban land uses that provide heterogeneous habitats, as well as butterfly host and nectar plants, must be promoted. Butterfly ranching and farming may also provide opportunities for sustainable community development. Many possibilities exist for incorporating observations of citizen scientists into butterfly data collection at broad spatial and temporal scales. Our recommendations further the ten Priority Areas of China's National Biodiversity Conservation Strategy and Action Plan (2011-2030).

Abstract:China is one of the “megadiversity” countries with over 30,000 species of higher plants and 6347 species of vertebrates, including numerous endemic species and relict species. The vast territory, with its various climates and landforms have formed complex and manifold habitats and rich diversity of ecosystems. China is a signatory country to several international conventions and agreements related to biodiversity and has established a legislation framework for biodiversity conservation. State, interdepartmental, departmental plans related to biodiversity have been made, such as Chinas Agenda 21, the Chinese Country Study on Biological Diversity, the Chinese Biodiversity Conservation Action Plan, the Chinese Environmental Protection Action Plan, and the Guideline for Nature Reserve Development Planning in China (1996–2010). Great efforts have also been made to protect natural resources and the environment, including policies for in situ and ex situ conservation, ecological construction, scientific research, education and training, and international cooperation. However, under the high pressure of population and economy, severe contradiction exists between conservation and the exploitation of biodiversity. This paper describes such achievements and related problems.

Abstract:Insects are the largest biological group on the earth, characterized by high biodiversity, easy rearing, and large populations. The utilization of insects in China has a long history and some insect species have contributed to the formation of characteristic industries. Insect products, such as silk and honey, are already familiar to the public; however, many beneficial insects and their products are not well known to most people, for example, lac insect and lac, gall aphid and Chinese gallnut, and insect wax. A new industry featuring the utilization and industrialization of insects has been rising in China. Chemically, insect products are used as raw materials; agriculturally, insects are utilized to pollinate crops for better yield; natural enemy insects have been reared to control pests; insect protein may be used for human food or animal feed; medicinally, chemical compounds may be extracted from insects as active ingredients for pharmaceutical usage; and ornamental butterfly has been applied in travel sightseeing. Insects' new purpose and function will be exploited as they gain recognition for their resources. This paper reviews insect industrialization in China and discusses the prospect of insect commerce in the future.

Abstract:AbstractPollinators provide important pollination services for crops around the world. In China, numerous studies have been conducted on pollinators within agroecosystems, yet a comprehensive review of such research remains to be completed. This study discusses the existing knowledge of pollinator diversity in Chinese agroecosystems, examines the provision of pollination services, and identifies key achievements and limitations. We propose a series of conservation and management actions to promote pollinator health and ecosystem services in these agroecosystems: (1) long‐term monitoring of pollinator populations, (2) designing agricultural landscapes that are conducive to pollinators, and (3) implementing microscale habitat modifications to improve conditions for pollinators.
Spatial Α-Diversity Patterns of Diverse Insect Taxa in Northern China: Lessons for Biodiversity Conservation

Abstract:Current approaches in terrestrial biodiversity conservation focus predominantly on plants and vertebrates. While these groups account for less than 4% of the estimated global species richness, it is commonly argued that especially the species richness in higher plants is a suitable indicator of overall biodiversity. We tested this assumption, investigating species richness and equitability patterns in three highly species-rich insect families and their links with the vegetation and other environmental factors. Vegetation surveys were combined with pitfall and light trapping to establish the alpha-diversity of ground beetles, geometrid moths and arctiid moths on 48 plots at varying altitudes between Beijing and the Inner Mongolian Plateau. Soil pH and nutrient status were also recorded. The alpha-diversity patterns in the three insect families were non-congruent, and links with phytodiversity were weak. The spatial alpha-diversity patterns in each of the three insect families were significantly correlated with the species density of individual plant families. These links varied between the three insect taxa and were mostly negative in moths. Furthermore, geometrid moth diversity decreased with increasing elevation and decreasing soil pH. Strongly diverging a-diversity patterns across different insect taxa illustrate that it is impossible to find a simple surrogate representing cross-taxon diversity for these highly diverse groups. Furthermore, phytodiversity and vegetation composition appear to play a limited role in governing insect diversity patterns. These results underline the significant risk that current plant-focused approaches in terrestrial biodiversity conservation are inadequate in addressing the conservation needs of the vast majority of species on earth. Abstract:Dramatic global changes to the environment have wrought unprecedented reductions in biodiversity, with >28% species assessed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) under the threat of extinction [1]. China, as one of the world’s megadiverse countries, plays a critical role in global biodiversity conservation. The upcoming 15th Conference of Parties (COP15) for Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) serves as an opportunity for China to make ambitious but pragmatic commitments to elevate its wildlife conservation and management activities. The development of an ‘Ecological Civilization’, which endorses the ancient Taoist idea of Unity of Nature and Man (UNM) to achieve harmony between human beings and nature, has greatly facilitated the mainstreaming of biodiversity conservation in China [2]. Experiences from China will shed light on wildlife conservation worldwide.
Conservation status of Chinese species: (2) Invertebrates

Abstract:A total of 2441 invertebrate species were evaluated using the IUCN Red List Criteria and Regional Guidelines. Approximately 30 experts were involved in this project, which covered a wide range of species, including jellyfish, corals, planarians, snails, mollusks, bivalves, decapods, benthic crustaceans, arachnids (spiders, scorpions), butterflies, moths, beetles, sea cucumbers, sea urchins, sea stars, acorn worms and lancelets. In general, invertebrate species in China were found to be severely threatened, with 0.9% being critically endangered, 13.44% endangered and 20.63% vulnerable. All species of hermatypic corals and planarians are threatened. More than 80% of evaluated species face serious threat due to habitat destruction by coral collection, logging, non-woody vegetation collection, timber plantations, non-timber plantations, extraction and/or livestock. Other threats are intrinsic factors, harvesting by humans, alien invasive species and pollution. The main intrinsic factors contributing to the high levels of threat are limited dispersal and restricted range. No conservation measures have been taken for 70% of the threatened invertebrates evaluated. Existing conservation measures include: strengthening of national and international legislation (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora), increasing public awareness, studying population trends/monitoring, and establishment of protected areas. The major conservation measure employed is strengthening of policies. Relative to the situation worldwide (2006 IUCN Red List), there is little information available about invertebrate extinctions in China.

Abstract:Biodiversity conservation plays an important role in the sustainable development of human society. China had made significant progress in biodiversity conservation studies and practices. This paper reviews major achievements in China in the past decades, especially those since 2010. In terms of the science behind biodiversity conservation, Chinese scholars have made significant contributions to priority research subjects, including mechanisms for maintaining biological communities and the relationship between biodiversity and ecosystem functioning. Simultaneously, biodiversity conservation and management systems specific to China have been basically established. The Chinese Government and researchers have undertaken a number of investigations, scientific studies, and monitoring, and have established relevant databases. With efforts taken to protect and restore biodiversity and ecosystems, the concept of biodiversity has gradually become popular in China. This review is an attempt to share with the world the learning from China's progress towards becoming an ecological civilization and highlights that the efforts towards biodiversity conservation need to be organically integrated with sustainable development goals.

Abstract:Nowadays, China is facing high speed of urbanization and some problems raised from it such as culture homogenization, climate change and air pollution, etc. Cities with intense human population and impact are containing the most profound modification on the earth. Ornamental plant diversity turns to be a necessary element not only for urban biodiversity conservation but also to emphasize unique urban features from different cultural backgrounds. Encompassing enormous variation in geography, climate, topography, China becomes one of the richest countries in the world in terms of ornamental plant biodiversity. Therefore, it is necessary to figure out a solution of utilizing wild ornamental plants to create cities with their own culture with lowering the risk of biological invasion through analyzing all the papers about wild ornamental plants surveys in recent ten years. In this paper, we review the current situation and challenges of ornamental plant biodiversity conservation in China and discuss its potential utilization and effect in urban pattern.
