Abstract:The mechanism of the development and growth of succulent root in Raphanus sativus L. was studied by investigating the accumulation of dry matter, sink activities, carbohydrate content, activities of sucrose invertase and profiles of soluble proteins. It was shown that the highest sink activities at 27 d after sowing (DAS) resulted in the carbohydrates seemingly being mainly partitioned into the developing succulent root and the root beginning to thicken. However, the sink activities were not significantly related to the activities of invertase in this variety. Additionally a special band corresponding to protein of about 20 kD appeared at 24 DAS, and then the intensities of this band increased during thickening growth of the succulent root.
