Abstract:Nutrient contents of Hemarthria altissima were analyzed to study the response of these plants to drought following flooding .Six groups were imposed ,including control (CK) ,surface flooding (SF) and total flooding (TF) ,control‐drought (CD) ,surface flooding‐drought (SFD) and total flooding‐drought (TFD) .Results showed that root nutrient composition (N ,P ,K ,Fe ,Mn) was significantly higher than that in well water‐drained control ;leaf Fe ,Mn concentrations of H. altissima were also high‐er in the SF and TF groups ;but the contents of P and K in leaves were significantly lower than that of CK group after the end of Phase I and Phase II .Under drought stress ,root ,stem and leaf N ,P ,K ,Fe level in groups CD and SFD showed no significant differences when compared to the control after the end of phase II .Whereas in TF and TFD ,the root ,stem and leaf nutrient composition (N ,K ,Fe ,Mn) were significantly increased as compared to other treatment groups .In additional ,the root ,stem and leaf nutri‐ent composition (N ,K ,Fe) of SFD group showed no significant differences to the CD group ,but the P content was significantly lower than that in the CD group and the Mn content was significantly higher than that in the CD group .By the end of recovery period ,root K ,Fe ,Mn concentrations in TF were signifi‐cantly higher than that in the control group ;leaf N ,K concentrations in TF was similar to the contents of K ,Fe ,Mn in root .However ,compared to CK ,root ,stem and leaf nutrient composition (N ,P ,K ,Fe , Mn) in drought groups (CD ,SFD and TFD) showed no significant difference to that in the control group . T he above results indicated that previous flooding had no detectable effect on subsequent sensitivity of H. altissima to drought ,and H. altissima could be a candidate species in re‐vegetation of the Three Gorges Reservoir Area (TGRA) for its adaption to flooding and drought stress .
