Abstract:In order to fined the relationship between the SPAD value and the nitrogen content of oilseed rapes,a Minolta SPAD-502 Meter was used for on-farm measurement of the N content,and then the Kjeldahl method has been used for measuring the nitrogen content of these oilseed rapes.The results of these two methods have been fitted,as a result,the correlation coefficient is 0.863,a new method for quickly measuring the nitrogen content of oilseed rapes is offered.
Study on Rapid Measurement of Soybeans Moisture Content Based on Dielectric Properties

Abstract:For the purpose of rapid and nondestructive determination of soybean moisture content, a new measurement principle based on the dielectric properties of the measured plant material was proposed and a moisture measuring device making use of this principle was designed. The device was comprised of a sleeve capacitance in which the soybeans to be measured was packed, a signal generator and a signal measuring instrument. The relationships between relevant dielectric parameters (equivalent capacitance, resistance and loss tangent) and moisture content of soybeans in the capacitance cylinder under different excitation frequency were examined. In the tests performed in our laboratory, the optimal frequency was found to be about 1 kHz, at which the capacitance in relation to moisture content can be represented by a power function. Abstract:An on-line measuring system of seed moisture content is developed in this paper. The mechanical system is mainly composed of two horizontal concentric cylinders. The inner cylinder rotates and continuously delivers seeds into the measuring position between the two cylinders. A stray-immune switching circuit is employed to measure the capacitance of the two steel plates. The lower steel plate also serves as the platform of the weighing unit in the system. The temperature is sensed by precise thermal transducer. The measured information of the capacitance, weight and temperature is output in digital format via A/D converter. Experiments are made upon the three units with known capacitance, weight and temperature respectively, and the influence of temperature and atmosphere humidity to the capacitance is measured also. The accuracy, reliability and feasibility of the system are therefore evaluated.

Abstract:To study the effects of seed metering on seeding performance under different motion parameters, a simulation model for a spoon-wheel type seeder was established. A seed meter was tested by using EDEM (Engineering Discrete Element Method) software to simulate its working process at different speeds and tilt angles. The trajectories of individual cottonseeds in the seed-metering device were obtained, concurrently, the stress trend in the grain group was determined as a function of time. The simulation results suggest that at larger speeds, the metering index of the seed meter gradually decreases, while the index and the missing index gradually increase. As the tilt angle increased, the multiples index and missing index gradually decreased, while the multiples index gradually increased. When the seed meter speed reached 50 r/min and the tilt angle was 15°, the seed meter had a relatively good working performance with a seed spacing acceptance index of 92.59%, a multiples index of 1.85%, and a missing rate index of 5.56%. The seed meter was tested on a bench by using a JPS-12 performance-tester bench. At the aforementioned speed and angle, the coefficient of variation for the cottonseed spacing was 2.1%. The field trial results indicated that the multiples and the missing rates were higher than those for the tester bench but still met a passing rate of more than 90%. The coefficient of variation for the seed spacing was less than 10%, suggesting that the design could be used for field sowing. The resulting seeding uniformity was higher under these conditions, which indicates that the seed meter has a better working performance and the bench has a good seeding effect.

Abstract:The seed metering device is the key working part of the peanut planter and is placed above the bottom of the seed box or above the opener. The essence of the seed metering process is the eff ect of the seed meter on the seed, converting the seed from the population into an individual, and converting it into a uniform seed stream or a continuous single seed. The seeding method and quality of the seeding machine depend mainly on the seed metering device. Aiming at the shortage of re-broadcasting rate and missed-out rate during sowing, the diff erent parameters of the air-suction metering device were analyzed, and the seeding performance of the seeding device was tested to obtain the primary and secondary factors aff ecting the performance of the seeding device, and the quality of seeding was improved.

Abstract:Obtaining information on cotton yields and creating a spatial map of cotton production is the starting point for implementing precision agriculture. Microwave technology has been used for yield estimation in China for crops such as corn and soybeans and has shown strong applicability. However, research on cotton yield estimation using microwave technology is weak. Therefore, this paper proposes a method for seed cotton mass estimation based on the microwave Doppler method and designs bench tests to prove the feasibility of the method. First, a seed cotton speed estimation model was established based on the microwave Doppler effect and fast Fourier transform. On this basis, a seed cotton velocity estimation experiment was designed to study the effects of sensor installation angle and position, pipe collision friction, air resistance, and the interaction force between the seed cotton on the seed cotton movement velocity. The power spectral density (PSD) of the acquired microwave data is then estimated using the modified periodogram method. The least squares method was used to establish a linear regression model between seed cotton mass and the corresponding PSD, and finally the free-fall mass experiment and pneumatic conveying mass experiment yielded that the estimation errors of seed cotton mass were 7.30% and 6.17%, respectively. The experimental results show that the estimation error is small when using microwave technology for seed cotton mass estimation, which meets the requirements of actual operation.

Abstract:The theory and technology of water-saving through crop compensation for water deficit and how they relate to crop production are theoretically important and potentially promising in agriculture application. Molecular and physiological mechanisms, however, still constitute those issues that need further research. The molecular and physiological processes of water-saving of crop by compensation for moderate water deficit was systematically analyzed based on related research advances in recent years. The researches results showed that water deficit and re-watering could change growth of plant nutritional organs such as roots, stems and leaves. Osmo-regulation, transpiration, photosynthesis and other physiological processes were also altered by water deficit and re-watering. Protein activity and molecular metabolism of crops adapted to changes in water availability. A water deficit threshold controlled compensations in crop production. With appropriate degree and duration of water deficit, crop water use efficiency improved and even increased (instead of decreasing) crop yield. If widely adopted in agricultural production, water-saving technologies through compensation for water deficit could be vital for improving economic returns and food safety.

Abstract:Accurately obtaining crop yields is an important part of the precision agriculture technology system; with the increased mechanisation of cotton planting and harvesting, it has become particularly important to accurately obtain seed cotton yield data. In order to achieve accurate estimation of machine-picked seed cotton yield, this paper designs a machine-picked seed cotton yield estimation system based on microwave Doppler principle. Based on LabVIEW software, the signal acquisition circuit is designed; the power spectrum of the echo signal is estimated; the signal echo power is obtained; the relationship model between echo power and seed cotton mass is established by using multiple regression equations; and the reliability of the model is verified by using statistical methods. By adjusting the rotational speed of the fan, the wind speed at the inlet of the cotton pipeline was 10 m s −1 , 15 m s −1 and 20 m s −1 , and the yield estimation tests were carried out at the three wind speeds, and the data showed that the average absolute percentage errors of the estimation at the three wind speeds were 7.36%, 7.72% and 8.17%, and the mean squared errors were 2.699, 4.938 and 4.026, respectively. The test results show that the accuracy of seed cotton mass estimation under the three wind speeds basically meets the needs of the yield measurement system, and the systematic error of seed cotton yield estimation is the smallest when the wind speed is 10 m s −1 .

Abstract:In order to solve the problem that the current precision seeder has difficulty in precision sowing pepper seeds, an air-suction pepper seed metering device based on air supply and quantitative seed supply was developed. Combined with its basic structure and working principle, the CFD-DEM coupling method was used for analysis, and the best combined hole parameters were obtained. A single factor experiment with the pass rate, replay rate, and missed rate as experimental indicators was designed. Regression model was established to obtain a reasonable range of each parameter. The results showed that when the speed of the drum barrel was 28.65r/min and the working negative pressure was 4.40kPa, the seeding pass rate of the seed meter was 91.32%, the replay rate was 4.51%, and the missed rate was 4.17%. The comprehensive performance index was better.

Abstract:The paper introduces the methods of drying and pycnometer for sediment yield of total precipitation erosion of observation model and validates the reliability of the measurement through check tests of sediment concentration with different particle sizes. It puts forward to differentiate the coarse and fine sand and then measure the sediment yield of total precipitation erosion by using the combined method of drying and pycnometer in the light of the soil mixed with large quantity of coarser sand in the model tests. The introduced method has the characteristics of reliable result and higher working efficiency.

Abstract:The quantitative evaluation of the impact of drought on crop yield is one of the most important aspects in agricultural water resource management. To assess the impact of drought on wheat yield, the Environmental Policy Integrated Climate (EPIC) crop growth model and daily Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI), which is based on daily meteorological data, are adopted in the Huang Huai Hai Plain. The winter wheat crop yields are estimated at 28 stations, after calibrating the cultivar coefficients based on the experimental site data, and SPEI data was taken 11 times across the growth season from 1981 to 2010. The relationship between estimated yield and multi-scale SPEI were analyzed. The optimum time scale SPEI to monitor drought during the crop growth period was determined. The reference yield was determined by averaging the yields from numerous non-drought years. From this data, we propose a comprehensive quantitative method which can be used to predict the impact of drought on wheat yields by combining the daily multi-scale SPEI and crop growth process model. This method was tested in the Huang Huai Hai Plain. The results suggested that estimation of calibrated EPIC was a good predictor of crop yield in the Huang Huai Hai Plain, with lower RMSE (15.4 %) between estimated yield and observed yield at six agrometeorological stations. The soil moisture at planting time was affected by the precipitation and evapotranspiration during the previous 90 days (about 3 months) in the Huang Huai Hai Plain. SPEIG90 was adopted as the optimum time scale SPEI to identify the drought and non-drought years, and identified a drought year in 2000. The water deficit in the year 2000 was significant, and the rate of crop yield reduction did not completely correspond with the volume of water deficit. Our proposed comprehensive method which quantitatively evaluates the impact of drought on crop yield is reliable. The results of this study further our understanding why the adoption of counter measures against drought is important and direct farmers to choose drought-resistant crops.

Abstract:This study developed an axial air-suction drum seed-metering device without a special vacuum pump and associated pipeline facilities, greatly simplifying the structure of the air-suction drum seed-metering device, which aimed to solve the problems of complex structure and difficult maintenance of traditional air suction drum seed-metering device. The geometric model of the seed-metering device was established by SOLIDWORKS. In addition, numerical simulation tests were carried out on the seed-metering device based on CFD to verify the feasibility of the theoretical operation of the seed-metering device. The seed-metering device was processed and a test bench was built for physical testing, which verified the feasibility of the actual operation of the seed-metering device. The bench test results showed that when the fan speed reached 2100 rpm, the adsorption rate of the seed-metering device on tomato seeds, pepper seeds, and eggplant seeds reached more than 86.39%,87.22%, and 93.06%, respectively. Besides, when the fan speed reached 2400 rpm, the adsorption rate of the seed-metering device on tomato seeds, hot pepper seeds, and eggplant seeds all reached more than 95%, which demonstrated that the seed-metering device has good seed suction performance despite its straightforward design.

Abstract:In order to solve the problems of easy seed shedding and poor seed population mobility during sowing, a precision seed metering tray for edible sunflowers with seed guide strips was designed in this paper. This article aims to adjust the adsorption posture of sunflower seeds by designing three types of structures: triangular seed guide strip, rectangular seed guide strip, and diamond seed guide strip. Seed population motion simulation and seeding performance experiments were conducted on the seeder. The experimental results show that adding a triangular seed guide strip to the seeding tray has the best disturbance effect on the seed population, with the highest proportion of seeds in the first adsorption stance seed (the seed centroid was adsorbed) and the highest qualification index. The working parameters for the best seed metering performance were obtained: the rotating speed of the seed metering disc was 8.41 r/min, and the vacuum degree was 3.5 kPa.
Development of a novel perforated type precision metering device for efficient and cleaner production of maize

Abstract:This research presents a filling method that strips the kernels from the seed group to address the poor performance and energy efficiency of the mechanical maize metering devices at high-speed operating conditions. In addition, it advances the design of a novel perforated type precision seed-metering device. The quantity and posture of seed filling are restricted by the perforated ring, which creates a dispersed particle flow, thus enhancing the filling effect of the seeding plate and reducing energy consumption. The structural design of critical components is completed, and the principle of improving performance and energy efficiency is analyzed. The DEM simulation and bench experiment assisted in analyzing the effects of operating parameters on seed dynamic characteristics, seeding plate's filling performance, and operational energy consumption. Finally, the optimal parameter combination is determined. The result demonstrates that the number of teeth in the perforated ring was 21, accompanied by an improved seed-filling effect and lower energy consumption. The metering performance was optimal when the tooth length of the perforated ring was 8.65 mm, the center angle of the teeth was 8°, and the operating speed was 13.55 km/h. Moreover, the qualified rate was 94.5 %, the multiple rate was 2.8 %, and the leakage rate was 2.7 %. The operating speed was in the range of 8–14 km/h, the qualified rate of the perforated seed-metering device was higher than 92.7 %, the leakage rate was lower than 5.4 %, the multiple rate was lower than 3.5 %, and the coefficient of performance was more than 9.2. Its energy efficiency was significantly better than that of the picker finger seed-metering device and the air-suction seed-metering device, thus satisfying the demands for an efficient and cleaner production of maize.

Abstract:This paper proposes a solution to the problem of tight population in the filling area of traditional air suction seed metering devices during quinoa sowing, which leads to inaccurate adsorption. The proposed method disperses the population into a stable seed flow and absorbs the seeds in a flow posture. The flow adsorption precision seed metering device is designed and improved, and the key structure parameters are optimized based on the shape and size parameters of quinoa seeds. A four-factor and three-level response surface orthogonal test is conducted using the Box–Behnken experimental design. The number of seeds, flow angle, negative pressure at the suction hole, and advancing speed are taken as experimental factors, and the qualified index of grain number per hole, qualified index of hole distance, and coefficient of variation of hole distance are used as evaluation indices. The results are optimized using extreme value theory, and it is found that when the seed amount is 5.82 mm, the flow angle is 31.08°, the negative pressure of the air chamber is 1.7 kPa, and the advancing speed is 3.82 km·h−1, and the qualified index of hole number is 94.37%, the qualified index of hole distance is 95.39%, and the coefficient of variation of hole distance is 4.51%. The results are in general agreement with the prediction through the bench validation test, which meets the requirements of quinoa seed metering devices.

Abstract:This study introduced a high-speed precision dual-chamber maize seed metering device and examined the impact of irregular-shaped holes on the planting quality in order to enhance the precision of maize planting. Based on the characteristic dimensions of maize seeds, the horizontal-profiled seed metering plates, lateral-profiled seed metering plates, vertical-profiled seed metering plates, and round-hole seed metering plates were developed. This research examined how the performance of individual seed metering plate types is affected by varying forward velocity and negative pressure conditions. Utilizing high-speed camera technology, statistical analysis was conducted on the adsorption posture data of maize seeds with different hole shapes. It was found that the qualified index showed a positive correlation with the quantity of seeds in the horizontal posture, while the quantity of seeds in the lateral posture and vertical postures collectively influenced the multiples index and the miss index. This research explored the optimal operating parameters for the high-speed precision dual-chamber maize seed metering device, with a forward velocity of 15 km/h and a negative pressure of 14 kPa. The validation tests yielded the qualified index of 98.13 %, the multiples index of 1.19 %, and the miss index of 0.68 %. This study offers insight for developing different seed metering devices based on seed characteristic dimensions, while also offers insights into the mechanism for improving the seeding quality of high-speed precision seed metering devices.

An automated method for the assessment of the rice grain germination rate

Abstract:The germination rate of rice grain is recognized as one of the most significant indicators of seed quality assessment. Currently, grain germination rate is generally determined manually by experienced researchers, which is time-consuming and labor-intensive. In this paper, a new method is proposed for counting the number of grains and germinated grains. In the coarse segmentation process, the k-means clustering algorithm is applied to obtain rough grain-connected regions. We further refine the segmentation results obtained by the k-means algorithm using a one-dimensional Gaussian filter and a fifth-degree polynomial. Next, the optimal single grain area is determined based on the area distribution curve. Accordingly, the number of grains contained in the connected region is equal to the area of the connected region divided by the optimal single grain area. Finally, a novel algorithm is proposed for counting germinated grains. This algorithm is based on the idea that the length of the intersection between the germ and the grain is less than the circumference of the germ. The experimental results show that the mean absolute error of the proposed method for germination rate is 2.7%. And the performance of the proposed method is robust to changes in grain number, grain varieties, scale, illumination, and rotation.

Rapid and Non-Destructive Prediction of Moisture Content in Maize Seeds Using Hyperspectral Imaging

Abstract:The moisture content of corn seeds is a crucial indicator for evaluating seed quality and is also a fundamental aspect of grain testing. In this experiment, 80 corn samples of various varieties were selected and their moisture content was determined using the direct drying method. The hyperspectral imaging system was employed to capture the spectral images of corn seeds within the wavelength range of 1100-2498 nm. By utilizing seven preprocessing techniques, including moving average, S-G smoothing, baseline, normalization, SNV, MSC, and detrending, we preprocessed the spectral data and then established a PLSR model for comparison. The results show that the model established using the normalization preprocessing method has the best prediction performance. To remove spectral redundancy and simplify the prediction model, we utilized SPA, CASR, and UVE algorithms to extract feature wavelengths. Based on three algorithms (PLSR, PCR, and SVM), we constructed 12 predictive models. Upon evaluating these models, it was determined that the normalization-SPA-PLSR algorithm produced the most accurate prediction. This model boasts high RC2 and RP2 values of 0.9917 and 0.9914, respectively, along with low RMSEP and RMSECV values of 0.0343 and 0.0257, respectively, indicating its exceptional stability and predictive capabilities. This suggests that the model can precisely estimate the moisture content of maize seeds. The results showed that hyperspectral imaging technology provides technical support for rapid and non-destructive prediction of corn seed moisture content and new methods in seed quality evaluation.
