Abstract:Research and application of botanical pesticides, including plant chem ical defense, botanical pesticides, plant protestants, and tropical plant pestic ides are briefly reviewed. The research and application of botanical bactericide s and botanical herbicides are far less intensive and extensive compared with th e botanical insecticides. However, current researches indicates that a wide rang e of plants had the capacity of controlling weeds, bacteria and fungi. There is, therefore, a great prospect to exploit plant resources to develop bactericides, fungicides and herbicides.

Abstract:How complicated cell activities produce characteristic tissue and organ morphologies is an important question in plant morphogenesis. To address this question, 3D morphometry of plant organs on multiscales is indispensable. In recent years, advances in confocal microscopy with fluorescent probes that mark the cell wall or plasma membrane enable the visualization of organ morphology with submicron precision. In parallel, new quantitative and correlative imaging pipelines realize 3D image processing on 2D curved surface, facilitating the study of cell and tissue behaviors in plant organogenesis. Here, we describe methods for 3D morphometry of Arabidopsis sepals, focusing on live imaging coupled with MorphoGraphX-based 3D image processing for cellular growth analysis.

Abstract:Empirical studies recognized stomata openings as passive access for pathogenic bacteria to plants,while recent studies indicate that stomata can play active roles in confining bacterial invasion as a crucial part of the plant innate immune system.These novel findings have caused rapid advances in stomata-based immunity studies,which is an interdisciplinary subject of plant stomatal regulations and immunology.Here,we reviewed the advanced studies,reveal the mechanism of stomata immunity and envisage its effects on water use efficiency of plants.

Abstract:Artemisinins was derived from Artemisia annua L.Many pharmacological effects of artemisinins had been confirmed,such as antimalarial,antitumor and antischistosome,but the mechanisms and property of pharmacological effects had not been recognized clearly.In this paper the research progress on the pharmacological effects of artemisinin and its derivatives was summarized and its mechanism of the pharmacological effects also was discussed to provide references for the exploitation and utilization.

Abstract:The flower is the most important biological structure for ensuring angiosperms reproductive success. Not only does the flower contain critical reproductive organs, but the wide variation in morphology, color, and scent has evolved to entice specialized pollinators, and arguably mankind in many cases, to ensure the successful propagation of its species. Recent proteomic approaches have identified protein candidates related to these flower traits, which has shed light on a number of previously unknown mechanisms underlying these traits. This review article provides a comprehensive overview of the latest advances in proteomic research in floral biology according to the order of flower structure, from corolla to male and female reproductive organs. It summarizes mainstream proteomic methods for plant research and recent improvements on two dimensional gel electrophoresis and gel-free workflows for both peptide level and protein level analysis. The recent advances in sequencing technologies provide a new paradigm for the ever-increasing genome and transcriptome information on many organisms. It is now possible to integrate genomic and transcriptomic data with proteomic results for large-scale protein characterization, so that a global understanding of the complex molecular networks in flower biology can be readily achieved. Abstract:Anther dehiscence is necessary for plant reproduction. Defects in anther dehiscence give rise to the failure of pollen release from anther locules and hence affect pollination. Therefore, it is essential to understand the cytological and molecular mechanism of plant anther dehiscence. In this paper we reviewed the studies on the mechanisms of plant anther dehiscence from different angles of view, as well as the reports aiming to the functional identification of the genes involving in the regulation pathway for anther dehiscence, in particular, the JA biosynthe-sis pathway.

Abstract:Plant organ abscission is a fundamental biological process. and is a stress and evolutionary mechanism formed to adapt to environmental changes due to external signal stimulation or age development. Flower, leaf and fruit abscission are common in production, not only in vivo plants but also in in vitro culture. Breakthroughs have been made in organ abscission studies for model plants and crops in vivo plants, but little is known about organ abscission in in vitro culture, which is a complex biological process. This paper reviews the organ abscission mechanism from the perspectives of cell histology, physiological biochemistry and molecular biology and looks forward to organ abscission research, which aims to fully clarify the plant organ abscission mechanism and provide theoretical and technical guidance for the normal/abnormal abscission of plant organs in actual production.

Abstract:Major advances have been made in recent years in our understanding of anther development through a combination of genetic studies, cell biological technologies, biochemical analysis, microarray and high-throughput sequencing-based approaches. In this chapter, we summarize the widely used protocols for pollen viability staining; the investigation of anther morphogenesis by light microscopy of semi-thin sections; TUNEL assay for programmed tapetum cell death; and laser microdissection procedures to obtain specialized cells or cell layers for carrying out transcriptomics.

Abstract:Virtual plants are computer simulations of the growth, development and deployment of plants in a three-dimensional space. Over the past 20 years, significant progress has been made in virtual plant modeling corresponding to the rapid advances in information technology. Virtual plant research has broad applications in agronomy, forestry, ecology, and remote sensing areas. In this review, we attempt to introduce the significance, modeling methodology, and main advances in virtual plant research and applications. The challenges associated with virtual plant modeling in agronomy applications, including the interaction mechanism between plant and environment and root system modeling, are also discussed. Insights into applications of virtual plants in agronomy are given in the areas of performing virtual experiments to accurately quantify the utilization of soil water and nutrients, to design crop ideotype on computers, and to improve crop planting.

Abstract:Plant science in China has been developing rapidly, with an increased number of original papers published in top international journals. Chinese scientists have made remarkable achievements in insights into important plant scientific issues, such as the structural basis for energy transfer pathways in the plant PSI-LHCI supercomplex, the perception and tolerance of rice chilling, and the molecular mechanism of ethylene signal transduction. In the "Breakthrough of the year: The top 10 scientific achievements of life science in China in 2015", two outstanding outcomes of plant science were included. Chinese native plant scientists(including Youyou Tu and other scientists) found that artemisinin as a new drug to cure malaria, which won the Nobel Prize for natural science, marking a great achievement in plant chemistry and Chinese pharmacy. The achievement has drawn great international attention and also points to the effectiveness of the model developed by Chinese scientists—to focus on science and technology issues related to the major needs of the country. In this review, we provide a commentary on the significant progress made in plant science in China in 2015, review the latest findings and hot events in plant science in 2015, and share the great achievements made by Chinese scientists.

Abstract:During the past two decades, China has made great progress in tissue aid cell cultures of medicinal plants, this includes micropropagation, protoplast isolation and regeneration, and large scale cell suspension cultures. Recent development of plant transformation systems has offered a new approach to in vitro production of secondary metabolites. Hairy root cultures have been reported for a number of medicinal plant species, such as Artemisia annua that produces anti-malarial component artemisinin. Molecular cloning of key enzymes regulating the biosynthetic pathway and introduction of genes into medicinal plants has just started.
