Comparative test of new medium?large-fruited watermelon varieties

Abstract:Two watermelon varieties ‘Zaojia(8424)’and ‘Jingxin 1 ’were used as check varieties,and comparative tests of 4 new medium?large-fruited watermelon varieties were carried out by cultural practices of spring planting,early maturation and covering to comprehensively evaluate the new varieties in terms of growth period,yield,quality and adverse resistance.The results showed that the varieties ‘Shenmi 968’and ‘Kangbing 948’were easy of fruit setting in low temperature and weak light conditions,high in fruit yield,relatively thin in fruit skin and excellent in fruit quality,being very suitable for protected cultivation of spring planting and early maturation;The varieties ‘Shenkang 988’and ‘Shenxuan 958’were high in adverse resistance,easy of fruit setting under both early-spring low temperature and hot-summer high temperature conditions,high in fruit yield, good in fruit quality,tolerant to storage and transportation,simple in cultivation management,and especially had less phenomena of purple flesh and paste-like flesh,being suitable for long-season protected cultivation in Shang-hai and its surrounding areas.
