Abstract:The compressed air engine is receiving increasingly worldwide attention because it takes advantage of renewable energy and has zero exhaust emissions. This paper presents a systematic study on valve timing and size of a prototype compressed air engine for optimizing its efficiency and performance. An in-house air engine system model has been developed using the FLOWMASTER platform. The simulated results show that the optimizing valve timings is probably the most critical requirement in the compressed air engine design process.

Abstract:A new hybrid compressed-air and fuel engine was chosen as the research object.The new hybrid engine was modeled using the thermodynamics theories,which can work by both four-stroke compressed-air powered engine mode and internal-combustion engine mode and the simulation analysis was made in its operating characteristics.The simulation results show that the four-stroke compressed-air powered engine mode possesses preferable economic performance and torque characteristics when the engine rotating speed is below 1500r/min;the internal-combustion engine mode possesses better economic performance and torque characteristics when the rotating speed is between 1500r/min and 3500r/min.So the four-stroke compressed-air powered engine mode is fit to run at low speed or low load,and the internal-combustion engine mode is fit to run at high speed or high load.

Abstract:In order to analysis the microcosmic work process of high speed oil-free twin-screw compressor, a mathematical model of oil-free twin-screw compressor has been constructed basing on the laws of conservation of mass and thermodynamic relations.A compression chamber is studied in this model considering the internal leakage and heat transfer. Influence of rotational speeds, inlet temperature, injected water and inter lobe clearance on compressor'performance is analyzed.

Abstract:Instantaneous state analysis method is used to set up a mathematic model for compressed air engine,and fluid flow software Flowmaster flow software is used for research on the effect of parameters of compressed air system on performances for the engine.Through simulation,approach and method are brought out for increasing compressed air engine power performance and meliorate its economy performance.Research results indicate the following the pressure in the cylinder are increased by shortening up or down stream pipe length before or behind the inlet valve,and expanding upstream pipe diameter;The relation between downstream pipe diameter and charge quality is based on the Mach number in the downstream pipe of inlet valve;Indicative power is increased by expending exhaust valve diameter and adopting appropriate intake advance angle;Enhancing the pressure in the cylinder,improving the efficiency of intake air,increasing the indicative power are beneficial to improve power and economy performances for the compressed air engine.

Abstract:Using compressed air as a vehicle propulsion is an appealing prospect. It would provide a longterm potential to reverse environmental impact associated with burning of fossil fuels, provided that clean energy (wind energy or solar energy) is used to produce the compressed air. This paper presents a systematic study on the requirement of the design parameters of a prototype compressed air engine for optimising its efficiency and performance. An air engine system model has been developed and a detailed numerical simulation is carried out to investigate the effect of a number of key design parameters including the dimensions of the intake system, compression ratio, bore and stroke, crank/conrod (connecting rod) ratio. It has been found that the air engine efficiency and performance are sensitive to these parameters, and optimisation of them is a necessary requirement during the compressed air engine design process.

Abstract:The inner field of complicated structural muffler couldn′t be predicted accurately by plane wave theory.A numerical analysis method was suggested to simulate the inner field of muffler for improving the acoustic characteristic.At first,based on the basic assumptions,reasonable boundary conditions were applied appropriately,which included inlet,outlet and wall boundary conditions.Then three dimensional finite element model of muffler was modeled by ANSYS,and pressure-distribution and transmission loss were calculated by SYSNOISE.Next,a number of effects were studied,including the positions of rigid baffle in the chamber;the positions of extended tube;the positions of inlet tube.According to the analysis results and noise characteristic of compressor,structural parameters were optimized.Finally,the acoustic performance of muffler was improved efficiently.This method is feasible,which provides the references for design of mufflers.

Abstract:A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model based on the compressible, nonlinear Navier-Stokes equations is developed to simulate the nonlinear phenomena in a gas-liquid standing-wave thermoacoustic engine, which employs gas as the working fluid and liquid as the phase-matching element. The CFD model is well validated when comparing the simulated onset and steady-state performances with those measured from a real experimental system. Based on the CFD model, the nonlinear phenomena of the engine are analyzed from three aspects. Firstly, the nonlinear dynamic phenomena of self-excited thermoacoustic oscillation from onset to saturation are investigated, focusing on onset temperature difference and steady-state pressure amplitude. Then, the nonlinear acoustic phenomena of the engine operating at steady state are analyzed. The steady-state fluctuating pressure is decomposed into a superimposition of the acoustic modes with different frequencies, which reveals the existence of high-order harmonics. Finally, the nonlinear hydrodynamic phenomena including multi-dimensional flow effect and mass streaming are observed by examining the steady-state flow fields in the engine. The proposed CFD model provides an effective approach to comprehending the mechanism of nonlinear phenomena in gas liquid coupling thermoacoustic engines.

Abstract:Generally oil is treated as incompressible fluid.But in the high pressure the working medium in axial piston pump actually is weakly compressible fluid.The visual simulation of thw distribution process of axial piston pump was made with CFD method.The mathematical model was set up according to the structure and parameters of piston pump.The amendment was accomplished by programming and loading to the CFD solver through UDF to enhance the standard features of the code.By comparing the flow ripples in pump outlet of compressible and incompressible fluid,the conclusion can be drawn that the simulation results are closer to real condition by taking compressibility into account.

Abstract:Aiming at the effect of the results of two methods on flow field characteristics and air inlet uniformity of the intake manifold,two numerical calculation methods were used to simulate two models of intake manifold of a four-cylinder gasoline engine. Meanwhile,an engine test bench was established to verify the reliability of two numerical calculation methods on engine performance,fuel economy and running stability. The results indicate that the usingfour all-passand thethree closeof these two kinds of numerical computing methodsfor air intake resistance change trend is consistent,both are suitable for air intake resistance simulation analysis; the results of air inlet uniformity vary widely; thethree close,one passnumerical calculation method is more suitable intake manifold air intake uniformity analysis.

Abstract:In order to explore the aerodynamic noise mechanism of automobile engine turbocharger compressor, a 3-dimensional unsteady mathematical model was established for turbocharger compressor. Numerical simulation for the transient flow of the turbocharger compressor was carried out. The paper focused on the characteristics of pressure pulsation in the compressor. The simulation results show the process of pressure fluctuation excitation from blade rotation in the compressor, which provides the fluid dynamics information to study the compressor aerodynamic noise mechanism.

Abstract:A commercial compressor was measured with a setup which mainly composed of a needle valve,a mass-flow meter,two pressure gauges and a power meter.Based on the measured data of mass flow,input power,discharge and suction pressures,the relationships between suction volume flow,exergetic efficiency,and pressure ratio were derived by fitting the data.Meanwhile,a method to evaluate the volume distribution inside the compressor package was proposed.With the determined characteristics of suction volume flow,exergetie efficiency and volume distribution,the mass flow,electrical input power,discharge and suction pressures of the compressors operating in a GM-type cryocooler can be predicted at various working conditions.

Abstract:Three dimensional (3D) computational fluid dynamics (CFD) engine simulations can guide and/or complement experimental investigations and provide in-cylinder details that cannot be captured by conventional data acquisition methods. The main objective of this study was to establish a 3D RANS model (i.e., reasonable computational cost and running time) that can predict the efficiency and emissions of a 6V150 diesel engine under different operating conditions. The sub-models include renormalized k-epsilon turbulence model, G-equation model, solid cone breakup model (including hybrid KH-RT model and gas jet model), two-step soot formation model, and etc. The model was validated with experimental data from dynamometer tests. The results indicated that the numerical model captured the combustion and emission characteristics that occurred inside the combustion chamber, demonstrating its capability to evaluate engine characteristics during the development and optimization process.

Abstract:A numerical simulation method for high speed compressible multi-component flow was proposed to solve the high temperature and multi-species flow in future generation gas turbines. Implicit scheme for complete species equations and diffusion velocity correction method were used to improve the accuracy and conservation of mass fraction for each species.An additional transport equation related to specific heat ratio was solved to avoid nonphysical pressure oscillation around contact interface.The code was validated and to solve the flow of realistic complexity in gas turbines.

Abstract:The compressed air engine is a new kind power machinery, which uses high-pressure air as its energy storage medium and working medium. The high-pressure air expands inside the cylinder to produce power. Compared to the conventional internal combustion engine, compressed air engine has many advantages in terms of simple structure, no pollutant emission and no fuel consumption, etc. Thus, the compressed air engine has attracted plenty of attention. The previous researchers almost concern about the prototype designing, working process studying and energy loss analyzing on some specific operating condition. However, it is still lack of a systematic study about the energy loss distribution of compressed air engine as well as their causes. In order to solve the issues mentioned above, the exergy loss distribution and its variation trend in the working process of a single-cylinder compressed air engine developed by Zhejiang University were studied in this paper, through applying the thermodynamic theory and exergy analysis method. At first, the mathematical model of the compressed air engine was established and explored in Matlab. After the validation, the mathematical model was used to analysis the difference between the ideal and actual working process of the compressed air engine. Then, the exergy balance model of compressed air engine was built, and was used to analyze the influences of the main operation parameters on the exergy loss distribution, containing of engine revolving speed, intake pressure and temperature. The simulation results of the analysis showed that there is a big difference between the actual working process and ideal working process of compressed air engine, which lead to a lower actual efficiency than the ideal efficiency. The exergy loss of compressed air engine mainly contains intake loss, heat transfer loss, exhaust loss and friction loss. The intake loss and exhaust loss are the two largest part of compressed air engine loss, which result from intake throttling and high pressure, low temperature gas exhausting, respectively. Added together, the intake loss and exhaust loss account for about 30%-40%of the total intake exergy. The raising of engine revolving speed or the falling of intake temperature both lead to an increase of exergy loss in the intake and exhaust processes, while the raising of the intake pressure leads to an increase of exergy loss in the exhaust process and a decrease of exergy loss in the intake process. From economic considerations, the compressed air engine need to run in low revolving speed with appropriate high intake pressure and temperature. In order to validate the variation trend of compressed air engine exergy efficiency, a test bench of compressed air engine was built. The actual exergy efficiency of compressed air engine under different operation parameters were tested and computed, including revolving speed, intake pressure and temperature. It is shown that the test results well agree with the simulation results, though there is a slight gap between them, which proved the accuracy of the built compressed air engine mathematical model.
Development of a Throughflow-Based Simulation Tool for Preliminary Compressor Design Considering Blade Geometry in Gas Turbine Engine

Abstract:Gas turbine engines are highly intricate machines, and every component of them is closely associated with one another. In the traditional engine developing process, vast experiment tests are needed. To reduce unnecessary trials, a whole gas turbine engine simulation is extremely needed. For this purpose, a compressor simulation tool is now developed. Considering the inherent drawbacks of 0D analysis and 3D CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) calculation, the 2D throughflow method is an indispensable tool. Based on the circumferential average method (CAM), 3D Navier–Stokes is transformed into a 2D method. One phenomenon arising is that the lack of description about circumferential motion leads to the need for the blade force modeling in compressor simulation. Previous models are based on the assumption that flow passes through the average stream surface without entropy increasing, which is not applicable in the CAM. An improved model is proposed based on the result analysis from CAM and NUMECA method in a linear cascade. Whereafter, the model is applied in a highly loaded and low-speed fan, which has been tested for its performance characteristics. Utilizing the new model, the error of the adiabatic efficiency between CAM and experiment decreases from 4.0% to 1.0% and the accuracy of the mass flow, and pressure ratio remains unchanged. The time involved in the CAM simulation is nearly 70 times faster than that of the 3D simulation.

Abstract:In this numerical study, the temperature, pressure and flow structure inside the rotary compressor are obtained to analyze the work consumption and efficiency. The geometry of the compressor such as volume, inlet angle, and mass of reed valve are varied to look for optimal performance and design margin as the suggestions for manufacturing. The work done on refrigerant increases proportionally with the volume of the compressor. However, there is an optimal volume for efficiency. The design margin for inlet angle is determined. The best efficiency exists in a specific inlet angle. Larger mass of reed valve leads to the increase of input power due to the additional resistance from greater inertia, which causes a decrease of efficiency. The flow visualization by simulation diagnoses the potential factors, which may cause noise problem.
