Preparation and rheological properties of a stable aqueous foam system

Abstract:A new stable aqueous foam system was screened out by an orthogonal method and the effects of different factors on the rheological property of the foam were systematically investigated. The prepared aqueous foam has high stability. The foaming volume and half-life of 100 ml foam solution can reach 312 ml and 2274 min, respectively. The foam belongs to fine-celled foam, and the bubbles are wrapped by multilayered liquid films. The foam can maintain good stability even at high concentrations of salts and crude oil. For the foam rheology, with an increase in shear rate and salt concentration, the rheological model of the foam will change from power law model to Bingham model. Moreover, there exists optimum crude oil concentration and temperature to maximize the apparent viscosity of the foam. The apparent viscosity does not change significantly within several hours before and after foam drainage. In addition, a new wall slip correction method in foam rheology measurement is proposed.

Abstract:With polyether modified polysiloxane as main material,the selection of main antifoaming material,emulsion-dispersing agent and their compounding ratio were reviewed.The results showed the best stability and defoaming properties of organosilicon defoamer were achieved when prepared from polyether modified polysiloxane,dimethyl silicone and fumed silica with 4.5% emulsifier.HK-013 was used in dyeing and proved that it can replace the import defoaming agent.

Abstract:With the advancement of technology, wastewater treatment has become a significant challenge limiting the clean and sustainable development of chemical and metallurgical industries. Foam extraction, based on interfacial separation and mineral flotation, has garnered considerable attention as a wastewater treatment technology due to its unique physicochemical properties. Although considerable excellent accomplishments were reported, there still lacks a comprehensive summary of process features and contaminant removal mechanisms via foam extraction. According to the latest research progresses, the principles and characteristics of foam extraction technology, the classification and application of flotation reagents are systematically summarized in this work. Then comprehensively commented on the application fields and prospects of iterative flotation technology such as ion flotation, adsorption flotation and floating-extraction. The shortcomings and limitations of the current foam extraction technologies were discussed, and the feasible process intensification techniques were highlighted. This review aims to enchance the understanding of the foam extraction mechanism, and provides guidance for the selection appropriate reagents and foam extraction technologies in wastewater treatment.

Abstract:<p>The presence of tenacious froth in flotation products has a detrimental effect on the downstream dewatering process, which is a challenge in processing plants of a range of commodities, such as coal, talc, molybdenum, bitumen, potash, zinc, copper and gold. The generation of tenacious froth is not only related to the properties of mineral particles but can also be affected by water salinity and the presence of clay minerals. In this article, the effects of stable froth on the dewatering of flotation products were presented. Froth properties including froth structure, froth stability and froth rheology were presented first and then recent studies on the influence of froth on dewatering process were reviewed. Finally, future directions of research to increase the dewatering efficiency of flotation products are recommended.</p>

Abstract:As a critical air dissolving system, the performance of air flotation equipment directly determines the adhesion efficiency and pollutant removal efficiency of air flotation processes. The factors affecting the performance of air flotation equipment and the relationships between equipment performance and pollution removal efficiency were studied. The results show that when the dissolved gas pressure was 0.4 MPa and the air intake rate was 24 mL/min, the dissolved gas efficiency of the equipment reached its highest value of 55%, the average particle size of bubbles was maintained at 24 µm, and the dissolved oxygen (DO) content significantly increased. When the dissolved gas pressure was 0.4 MPa, the air intake rate was 24 mL/min, and the coagulant dose was 6 mg/L; the removal rates for turbidity, chlorophyll-a, total organic carbon (TOC), and UV absorbance at 254 nm (UV254) reached 95.76%, 96.41%, 34.21%, and 65.96%, respectively. The degree of pollutant removal was positively correlated with changes to the equipment performance parameters. Microbubbles (MBs) showed good removal of high-molecular weight, strongly hydrophobic organic matter and showed some removal of the trihalomethane formation potential (THMFP) of the water. The removal mechanism mainly depended on the hydrophobic interactions of the MBs with algae and organic matter. The flocs and MBs collided and adhered to form air-entrained flocs. The separation of air-entrained flocs depended on the relationship between the surface load and the rising velocity. The surface load has to be lower than the rising velocity of the minimum air-entrained flocs to ensure good effluent outcomes.

Abstract:Foaming agents as a combination of several components are usually used as soil conditioning during earth pressure balance shield (EPBS) tunnelling. These residues in waste EPBS muck lead to a series of new challenges for in-situ recycling, i.e., foams overflow flocculation tank. This study investigates the effects of residual foaming agent components and defoamers on defoaming-flocculation-filterpress characteristics of EPBS muck using an improved flocculation and filterpress system. Residual foam height ( H f ), defoaming ratio (DFR), antifoaming ratio (AFR), total suspended substance (TSS), turbidity, moisture content (MC), and zeta potential (ZP) were selected as characterization indices. The microstructure of filterpress cakes was analyzed using a scanning electron microscope. Results demonstrate that an enhancement within 0.0-1.0wt.% for sodium fatty alcohol polyoxyethylene ether sulfate (AES) and alpha olefin sulfonate (AOS) significantly reduces DFR and AFR. The MC and ZP decline, while the H f and turbidity enhance. The combinations of nonionic surfactants alkyl polyglycoside (APG) and fatty alcohol-polyoxyethylene ether (AEO) in a concentration range of 0.0-1.0wt.% with 0.2wt.% AES causes the H f , DFR, AFR, turbidity, and ZP to exhibit absolutely different variations. The MC with the growth in both APG and AEO presents a trend of first decreasing and then increasing. By increasing foam stabilizers sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and guar gum (GG) within 0.02-0.10wt.%, the AFR, TSS, and ZP enhance in varying degrees, while the H f , DFR, and MC gradually reduce. With the increase of defoamers hydroxyl silicone oil-glycerol polyoxypropylene ether (H-G) and dimethyl silicone oil-glycerol polyoxypropylene ether (D-G) within 0.002-0.010wt.%, the DFR and AFR are significantly improved, while the TSS, turbidity, MC, and ZP display varying degrees of reduction. Moreover, defoaming-flocculation-filterpress mechanisms of EPBS muck are explored to provide a useful reference for actual in-situ recycling projects.

Abstract:Flotation is a process involving multi-components, multi-scales, and gas-liquid-solid three phases, where the material separation is achieved based on the difference in surface hydrophobicity of various constituents. In a flotation system, fluids are usually regarded as the continuous phase, while the dispersed phases refer to scattered particles, bubbles, and droplets with low solubility as a dispersion that is surrounded by the aqueous environment. Fundamentally, the interactions among dispersed phases exist throughout the flotation process, and play distinct roles during different periods. For example, the liquid collector-solid, solid-solid, bubble-bubble and gas bubble-solid interactions are closely associated with the particle surface modification, particle behavior, bubble size evolution and separation in flotation, respectively. Therefore, the influences of each stage are all worthy of concern, and should be spared sufficient attention, which requires to formulate a horizontal writing structure. In this review, instead of summarizing all available characterization techniques or measurements, certain typical examples or methods were consciously chosen to perform analysis or comparison, aiming to summarize recent studies on the determination and modulation of dispersed phase interactions. The determination on the interactions among dispersed phases is helpful for fundamentally understanding the microcosmic process connotations, and their modulation contributes to firmly providing macroscopic optimization schemes for practical applications. By integrating some typically available theoretical calculations and experimental measurements related to the dispersed phase interactions, the present article is devoted to revealing the influential factors, finding out the current challenges or knowledge gaps, and affording certain references or suggestions for future investigations.
Foaming mechanisms and control strategies during the anaerobic digestion of organic waste: A critical review

Abstract:<p>Foaming is a problem that affects the efficient and stable operation of the anaerobic digestion process. Characterizing foaming mechanisms and developing early warning and foaming control methods is thus critically important. This review summarizes the correlation of process parameters, state parameters, and microbial communities with foaming in anaerobic digesters; discusses the applicability of the above-mentioned multi-scale parameters and foaming potential evaluation methods for the prediction of foaming risk; and introduces the principles and practical applications of antifoaming and defoaming methods. Multiple causes of foaming in anaerobic digestion systems have been identified, but a generalizable foaming mechanism has yet to be described. Further study of the correlation between extracellular polymeric substances and soluble microbial products and foaming may provide new insights into foaming mechanisms. Monitoring the foaming potential (including the volume expansion potential) is an effective approach for estimating the risk of foaming. An in-situ monitoring system for determining the foaming potential in anaerobic digestion sites could provide an early warning of foaming risk. Antifoaming methods based on operating parameter management and process regulation help prevent foaming from the source, and biological defoaming methods are highly targeted and efficient, which is a promising research direction. Clarifying foaming mechanisms will aid the development of active antifoaming methods and efficient biological defoaming methods.</p>

Effect of frother on dynamic detachment of rising bubble-coarse particle aggregates at gas-liquid interface

Abstract:In the flotation process, the bubble-coarse particle aggregates easily undergo detachment at the gas-liquid interface, resulting in low mineral recovery. This paper tested the variation rule of surface tension with a concentration in the solution of four alcohols frother, namely, n-pentanol (NPA), methyl isobutyl carbinol (MIBC), 2-octanol, and polypropylene glycol (PPG). The effects of frothers on the motion characteristics of rising bubble-coarse particle aggregates and the dynamic detachment of aggregates at the gas-liquid interface were investigated separately using a high-speed dynamic camera system and a dynamic detachment device. The results showed that the solution surface tension decreased and then tended to be stabilized with the increase of frother concentration. Under the same concentration, the stronger the surface activity of the frother, the smaller the rising velocity of the bubble-coarse particle aggregates, and the more stable the motion state of the aggregates, with a smaller velocity fluctuation. The lower rising velocity reduced the particle detachment probability when aggregates collided with the gas-liquid interface. The merger time of the bubble-coarse particle aggregates was extended with the improved surface activity of the frother, increasing by more than 1 s compared to the solution without the frother. The study will contribute to effectively reduce the dynamic detachment probability of bubbles-coarse particle aggregates at the gas-liquid interface by selecting the type and concentration of frothers, meanwhile optimizing the reagent regime to enhance the coarse particle flotation recovery in the practical production process.

Abstract:Investigation into the physics of foaming has traditionally been focused on aqueous systems. Non-aqueous foams, by contrast, are not well understood, but have been the subject of a recent surge in interest motivated by the need to manage foaming across industrial applications. In this review, we provide a comprehensive discussion of the current state-of-the-art methods for characterizing non-aqueous foams, with a critical evaluation of the advantages and limitations of each. Subsequently we present a concise overview of the current understanding of the mechanisms and methods used for stabilizing and destabilizing non-aqueous foams. We conclude the review by discussing open questions to guide future investigations.

Abstract:In the present study flocculation flotation (floc-flotation) of ultrafine hematite and quartz was investigated in a laboratory-scale flotation column. A direct flotation scheme was used to float hematite using in-house synthesized n-octyl hydroxamic acid (OHA) as a collector. A polymer system containing tannic acid (TAN) and poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) was used to flocculate quartz to reduce its entrainment. The effects of agitation intensity and foam stability on floc size distribution, entrainment reduction, and flotation kinetics/recovery were investigated. It was shown that the dual polymers TAN-PEO were effective in reducing quartz entrainment, and that the degree of entrainment reduction was affected by the intensity of agitation. A correlation was established between the mean floc size and a reduction in quartz entrainment. TAN-PEO dual polymer system also enhanced the flotation kinetics and recovery of hematite by OHA, originating from a synergistic effect between PEO and OHA. Therefore, higher separation efficiency was achieved from synthetic ultrafine hematite and quartz mixtures when TAN-PEO was added after OHA. The underlying mechanisms were studied by floc size distribution, surface tension, and foam height and decay time measurement. This work helps understand the relationship between hydrodynamic condition, flocs size, and mechanical entrainment when polymeric flocculation is used for entrainment reduction in fine and ultrafine minerals flotation.

Abstract:The significance of frothers in the context of mineral flotation is widely recognized, particularly in relation to their impact on bubble size and dispersion, coalescence inhibition, as well as the structure and stability of the froth. All these parameters hold substantial importance in determining the feasibility of the process including the overall recovery of valuable minerals and concentrate grade in flotation process. This review aims to offer a comprehensive overview of the importance of frothers in the flotation process focusing on their performance and function in the context of their chemical classification. The characterisation of flotation frothers is discussed, focusing on the most often used parameters including molecular weight, hydrophilic-lipophilic balance (HLB), dynamic frothability, and interfacial tension measurement. Additionally, the importance of advanced characterisation techniques such as single rising bubble experiments, high-speed video microscopy and infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (IRRAS) is highlighted. Finally, the application of biodegradable and environmentally friendly biosurfactants such as rhamnolipids as "green frothers" in enhancing flotation rates is outlined.

Abstract:Many reagents are used as frother in flotation process, however, a general reference for their identification and characterization is not available. The present work categorizes the commonly used frothers and evaluates the available methodologies to determine their properties. In this paper, frothers properties such as molecular weight, viscosity, boiling and freezing point, hydrophile-lipophile balance number, solubility, surface activity and critical micelle concentration were discussed. The commonly used measurement methods for froth structure and dynamic and static frothability were also presented along with water recovery index and critical coalescence concentration (CCC). Results showed that the practical identification of frothers properties has not been thoroughly evaluated and therefore, there is a need for developing novel and easy-to-apply experimental methods in this area. For example, it was found that there is no promising single process to measure the CCC value. This review revealed that the 2D froth structure measurement methods are associated with a considerable bias, while 3D techniques can effectively represent the actual froth properties. It was also found that the potential interactions between various frothers properties and how they can influence the flotation performance in an industrial environment are not yet understood and needs further investigation. It was also identified that there is no standard instruction to provide a reliable connection between both manufactures and frothers consumers. In our opinion, the current review paves the path for the elaboration of knowledge and technology to provide promising methods for determining conventionally used and complex frothers properties.

Abstract:The particulate contamination degree of aviation coolants (ACs) is overestimated commonly because the bubbles in ACs are erroneously recognized as particulate contaminants during the measurement process. In this work, the factors that influence the foam behavior and contamination degree of ACs are investigated. It is evidenced that the foam behavior of ACs is basically unaffected by the ratio of glycol to water of the base solution, which, however, is highly influenced by the organic additive. Also, the more the organic additive arranged at the gas–liquid interface, the lower the surface tension of glycol aqueous (GA) solution and the higher the contamination degree. Furthermore, the foam characteristics and contamination degree of ACs are highly affected by the working conditions, such as airflow, operating temperature, and gas pressure. Besides, the defoaming rate can be accelerated by adding an antifoaming agent or ultrasonic processing; however, the defoaming effect of the natural static method and pressuring positively treatment is disappointing. To further improve the defoaming effect, several efficient synergetic methods of defoaming have been proposed.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Flotation is considered the most cost-effective and efficient algae-water separation technology. However, there are various flotation techniques for algae removal, such as coagulation-flotation (CF), foam flotation (FF), and positively charged bubble flotation (PF). It remains unclear which method is most suitable for removing algae from water bodies and under what specific conditions each technique is most effective. This study systematically compares CF, FF, and PF in terms of algal cell removal efficiency, concentration ratio, flotation kinetics, impact on algal cells, removal efficiency of algal organic matter (AOM) and microcystins (MC-LR), as well as economic cost analysis. CF is better suited for algae removal in water bodies, including drinking water sources, using fixed installations on shore due to its high removal efficiency, high concentration ratio, low chemical dosage, and minimal residuals. FF is more appropriate for non-drinking water sources as it can remove algae and further control algal growth; however, its residual CTAB may pose a threat to drinking water safety. PF is most suitable for in situ algae removal within water bodies, primarily because it does not require stirring or coagulation. Instead, modified bubbles can be directly introduced into the algal distribution layer, where they adhere to algal cells, facilitating algae-water separation. All three flotation methods are economically feasible for algae removal. For FF, the costs of chemicals and electricity are nearly equal, while for CF and PF, the primary cost is electricity. This study provides data to support the selection of appropriate flotation technologies for emergency removal of algal blooms in water bodies.

A Review of Ultrasonic Treatment in Mineral Flotation: Mechanism and Recent Development

Abstract:Ultrasonic treatment has been widely used in the mineral flotation process due to its advantages in terms of operational simplicity, no secondary pollutant formation, and safety. Currently, many studies have reported the effect of ultrasonic treatment on mineral flotation and shown excellent flotation performance. In this review, the ultrasonic mechanisms are classified into three types: the transient cavitation effect, stable cavitation effect, and acoustic radiation force effect. The effect of the main ultrasonic parameters, including ultrasonic power and ultrasonic frequency, on mineral flotation are discussed. This review highlights the uses of the application of ultrasonic treatment in minerals (such as the cleaning effect, ultrasonic corrosion, and desulfuration), flotation agents (such as dispersion and emulsification and change in properties and microstructure of pharmaceutical solution), and slurry (such formation of microbubbles and coalescence). Additionally, this review discusses the challenges and prospects of using ultrasonic approaches for mineral flotation. The findings demonstrate that the application of the ultrasonic effect yields diverse impacts on flotation, thereby enabling the regulation of flotation behavior through various treatment methods to enhance flotation indices and achieve the desired objectives.

The role of surface forces in mineral flotation

Abstract:Flotation is an interfacial separation technique, which plays a major role in mineral processing industry. It separates particles according to their wetting properties. In flotation pulp, particles and bubbles are highly dispersed in aqueous medium and in the presence of various flotation reagents. Almost all interfacial interactions including inter-particle, inter-bubble, and bubble-particle interactions in the complex pulp medium are driven by surface forces. Therefore, a fundamental understanding of the role of surface forces in flotation is a prerequisite to enhance practical flotation performance and adapt it for treatment of complex and refractory ores. In this paper, recent advances in the field of surface forces encountered in mineral flotation are reviewed. In particular, we highlight the latest progress in the attachment mechanism between bubble and particle with the aid of atomic force microscope and interference microscope. The current knowledge gap and future directions are also discussed.

Abstract:Microbubble (MB) aided clarification is applied in many industries due to its high efficiency, high loading rate and compact unit size over most other conventional technologies. Compared to coarser air bubbles, MBs perform better in fine particle capture due to a high surface area to volume ratio and increased bubble population. The most common method of generating MBs in water/ wastewater treatment and fine particle recovery in the mineral processing industry is dissolved air flotation (DAF). DAF is a proven efficient technology in water treatment and has been regularly used in this industry over the past few decades. Influent physicochemical parameters can have greater impacts on DAF performance when it is applied in high solid content applications. Air dissolution within the saturator, bubble size distribution and rise velocity of air bubbles are key factors that determine the process efficiency of DAF units. Therefore, understanding the effects of various physicochemical parameters of the influent on DAF performance is important as these variations have to be compensated during both the design and operational stages to obtain better separation efficiencies. The current article reviews up to date research findings on the effect of viscosity, salinity, temperature, pH, zeta potential, surface tension, solid content, particle size and hydraulic loading rate on air dissolution, bubble size distribution and bubble rise velocity of MBs. Finally, conclusions have been drawn from the critical analysis and literature survey and the future research prospects are proposed.
