Abstract:Collectors play a decisive role in froth flotation by selectively hydrophobizing mineral particles. The new understanding of the molecular design of collectors, their flotation mechanism and green manufacture is reviewed in this paper. The density functional theory (DFT) calculation opens a new avenue for understanding the reactivity of the groups and atoms in a collector molecule, and azolethione surfactants including oxadiazolethione, thiadiazolethione, triazolethione, amino-triazolethione and tetrazolethione, have been designed and developed as collectors. The combination application of the DFT calculation and in situ detection technologies establishes a new platform for flotation fundamental research, and the monomolecular layer of a sulfhydryl collector chemisorbed on chalcopyrite has been observed and measured, and the nature of froth flotation is further understood. The new synthetic technologies for collectors such as xanthates and hydroxamates have been developed to prepare them in near atom economy, which supported their green manufacture and industrial upgrading. The new understanding of flotation collectors will boost their future development.

Abstract:Through the comparison of the distribution of the flotation-related literature amount, the development of flotation in the recent five years is outlined quantitatively.Review is mainly on the development of the following aspects of flotation: flotation equipment (flotation machine, flotation column and magnetic flotation equipment ), new flotation reagents( collector, frother and regulator ), separation in froth (new flotation method for coarse particles ),carrier flotation, collectorless flotation, physical function (external -exerted electric field, magnetization, ultrasonic wave etc.) and flotation, biological flotation (biological collector and regulator ), image of flotation froth, sulfide ores and bauxite ore.Besides, the advance in domestic flotation industrial practice in recent years is described briefly.

Abstract:Chalcopyrite and galena, commonly coexisting in sulphide deposits, present a formidable challenge in the separation process because of their analogous floatability, complex ore structure, and intergrowth characteristics. Nonetheless, considerable advancements have been achieved in recent years in the research on the separation of chalcopyrite and galena both domestically and internationally. This review provides an overview of the advancements in the research of flotation separation reagents for chalcopyrite and galena, including collectors and depressants, and elucidates the interaction mechanisms between flotation reagents and mineral surfaces. After an objective assessment of the advantages and disadvantages of various reagents, this study proposes the application of mixed reagents and potential future research directions for collectors and depressants, thereby providing a theoretical foundation for the development of flotation separation reagents for chalcopyrite and galena.

Abstract:The nature of froth flotation is to selectively hydrophobize valuable minerals by collector adsorption so that the hydrophobized mineral particles can attach air bubbles. In recent years, the increasing commercial production of refractory complex ores has been urgent to develop special collectors for enhancing flotation separation efficiency of valuable minerals from these ores. Molecular design methods offer an effective way for understanding the structure-property relationship of flotation collectors and developing new ones. The conditional stability constant (CSC), molecular mechanics (MM), quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR), and first-principle theory, especially density functional theory (DFT), have been adopted to build the criteria for designing flotation collectors. Azole-thiones, guanidines, acyl thioureas and thionocarbamates, amide-hydroxamates, and double minerophilic-group surfactants such as Gemini, dithiourea and dithionocarbamate molecules have been recently developed as high-performance collectors. To design hydrophobic groups, the hydrophilic-hydrophobic balance parameters have been extensively used as criteria. The replacement of aryl group with aliphatic group or CC single bond(s) with CC double bond(s), reduction of carbon numbers, introduction of oxygen atom(s) and addition of trisiloxane to the tail terminal have been proved to be useful approaches for adjusting the surface activity of collectors. The role of molecular design of collectors in practical flotation applications was also summarized. Based on the critical review, some comments and prospects for further research on molecular design of flotation collectors were also presented in the paper.

Abstract:The technique of separation and enrichment for floatation has been widely regarded due to lower cost,simple operation,better selectivity,high enriched multiple.The floatation analytes can be determined directly by spectrometry.In this paper,the research of separation and enrichment technique for floatation was anatomized based on the statistical result of literatures.The theory of key processes of floatation,like contact angle,surface potential and air bubble adsorptive capability was explained.The main factors influencing the floatation results,including pre-separated substance,pH of solution,surfactant,floatation addition agent,floatation temperature,air flow speed,ionic intensity and organic solvent,etc.were concluded.The current information on floatation of internal and overseas application was showed.The future research direction was mentioned.

Abstract:A tremendous amount of research has been done on refining the flotation process for iron ore and designing the reagents which go into it. This paper reviews the industrial practices and fundamental research surrounding iron ore flotation. The advantages and disadvantages of direct flotation, cationic reverse flotation, and anionic reverse flotation are reviewed. A novel stepped flotation technique is discussed for the treatment of carbonate-rich iron ores. The necessity of desliming to enable effective flotation is discussed in detail. Selective flocculation desliming is discussed in particular detail as it is the primary deslime methodology used in industry. This paper also describes a large variety of reagents commonly used or in development in each flotation route, covering collectors, activators, depressants, dispersants, flocculants, and frothers. The impact of the zeta potential and surface chemistry on flotation and deslime is also discussed. The aim of this paper is to provide a well-detailed, well-referenced source for the current status of iron ore flotation, and thus provide a useful guide to its future development and to further improve flotation performance for iron ore.

Abstract:Flotation has been widely used for separation of valuable minerals from gangues based on their surface characterizations and differences in hydrophobicity on mineral surfaces. As hydrophobicity of minerals widely differs from each other, their separation by flotation will become easier. Collectors are chemical materials which are supposed to make selectively valuable minerals hydrophobic. In addition, there are some minerals which based on their surface and structural features are intrinsically hydrophobic. However, their hydrophobicities are not strong enough to be floatable in the flotation cell without collectors such as sulfide minerals, coal, stibnite, and so forth. To float these minerals in a flotation cell, their hydrophobicity should be increased in specific conditions. Various parameters including pH, Eh, size distribution, mill types, mineral types, ore characterization, and type of reaction in flotation cells affect the hydrophobicity of minerals. Surface analysis results show that when sulfide minerals experience specific flotation conditions, the reactions on the surface of these minerals increase the amount of sulfur on the surface. These phenomenons improve the hydrophobicity of these minerals due to strong hydrophobic feature of sulfurs. Collectorless flotation reduces chemical material consumption amount, increases flotation selectivity (grade increases), and affects the equipment quantities; however, it can also have negative effects. Some minerals with poor surface floatability can be increased by adding some ions to the flotation system. Depressing undesirable minerals in flotation is another application of collectorless flotation.

Abstract:Scheelite has emerged as the primary source of global tungsten resources. The flotation separation of scheelite, which is hindered by its interface similarity with calcium-containing minerals, remains a worldwide challenge. Achieving precise regulation of interfacial physicochemical properties constitutes the scientific foundation for successful scheelite flotation. In this paper, the progress and prospects of scheelite flotation chemistry and its practice are summarized, encompassing various fields — such as crystal chemistry, solution chemistry, interface chemistry, and coordination chemistry — and providing guidance for the development of new scheelite flotation reagents and processes. The evolution of the scheelite flotation process has been predicated on the advancement of flotation reagents, which has resulted in the creation of the fatty acid flotation process, chelating collector flotation process, and metal–organic complex flotation process, all of which are integral to the three primary scheelite flotation processes. Moving forward, the development and implementation of highly selective complexes collector will be a crucial avenue to facilitate the environmentally-friendly and effective progression of the flotation process.

Abstract:In light of the gradual depletion of high-quality magnesite resources, it becomes paramount to employ flotation as a method for the efficient and cost-effective extraction of magnesium resource from magnesite. Despite an extensive body of research on the interfacial regulation of magnesite flotation, comprehension of various aspects and associated terminologies remains ambiguous. Persistent challenges in the interfacial regulation of magnesite flotation impede its development and industrialization, presenting a pressing obstacle. A comprehensive analysis of the current research status in magnesite flotation is undertaken, encompassing five key aspects: mineral characteristics of magnesite ore and its gangue, interfacial regulation of mineral interactions, interfacial regulation of inevitable metal ions, interfacial regulation of flotation reagents, and progress in flotation process research. Subsequently, proposed are novel directions and technological frameworks for the future of magnesite flotation interface regulation, incorporating mechanisms investigation, reagent design, biological flotation, process enhancement, and tailing utilization. These endeavors aim to update the existing system, offering insights and technological references for efficient desilication and decalcification in industrial production.

Abstract:The flotation separation of Cu-Fe sulfide minerals at low alkalinity can be achieved using selective depressants. In the flotation system of Cu-Fe sulfide minerals, depressants usually preferentially interact with the pyrite surface to render the mineral surface hydrophilic and hinder the adsorption of the collector. This review summarizes the advances in depressants for the flotation separation of Cu-Fe sulfide minerals at low alkalinity. These advances include use of inorganic depressants (oxidants and sulfur-oxygen compounds), natural polysaccharides (starch, dextrin, konjac glucomannan, and galactomannan), modified polymers (carboxymethyl cellulose, polyacrylamide, lignosulfonate, and tricarboxylate sodium starch), organic acids (polyglutamic acid, sodium humate, tannic acid, pyrogallic acid, salicylic acid, and lactic acid), sodium dimethyl dithiocarbamate, and diethylenetriamine. The potential application of specific inorganic and organic depressants in the flotation separation of Cu-Fe sulfide minerals at low alkalinity is reviewed. The advances in the use of organic depressants with respect to the flotation separation of Cu-Fe sulfide minerals are comprehensively detailed. Additionally, the depression performances and mechanisms of different types of organic depressants on mineral surfaces are summarized. Finally, several perspectives on depressants vis-à-vis flotation separation of Cu-Fe sulfide minerals at low alkalinity are proposed.

Wastewater recycling technology in Fankou Lead-Zinc Mine of China

Abstract:The effect of water quality, such as hardness, ionic strength, residual reagents and recycling water on flotation behavior of galena, zinc and pyrite was examined. To explain the flotation mechanism, electrochemical measurement and FTIR analysis were performed. Results of sedimentation and flotation experiment showed that the sedimentation time of wastewater increased with the increase of solid concentration. Dilution and addition of flocculants decreased the sedimentation time. Lead concentrate water could improve the flotation of galena while restrained the flotation of sphalerite activated by copper ion. Pyrite showed better floatability in sulfur concentrate water, zinc concentrate water and sulfur tailing water, while the flotation behavior of pyrite would be slightly depressed in galena concentrate water, zinc tailing water and sewage. Electrochemical measurement and FTIR analysis showed that between residual collector and galena, sphalertie and pyrite had different interaction mechanism and formed different surface species.

Abstract:After flowsheet revision,the practical processing of a complex lead-zinc sulfide ore was carried out,the processing parameters and reagent system were modified,and a new flotation separation technique was advanced.The results show that this new technique can upgrade product quality,improve metal recovery and reduce remarkably the reagent consumption,and notable economic and social benefits can be expected.

Abstract:Flotation process of micro-fine minerals have historically been hampered by slow flotation rate, poor selectivity, high reagent consumption, and low recovery. These disadvantages are mainly due to the large specific surface area attributed to the small-sized mineral particles. As such, research have revolved around enhancing their recovery by process intensification as one of the known effective methods. Micro/nanoparticles, on the other hand, possess many attributes, for instance, strong chemical activity, high reactivity, high surface free energy, and large adsorption capacity, all of which can contribute to improve the separation of micro-fine minerals. The mechanisms and preparation methods of nanoparticle collectors (NPCs) as well as ultrafine bubbles (UFBs) are described in this paper. Furthermore, the influences of NPCs and UFBs on the flotation of micro-fine minerals are also discussed. NPCs and UFBs are capable of providing hydrophobicity selectivity to the desired minerals to improve the flotation performance of mineral particles. This paper offers an overview of the underlying properties of NPCs and UFBs in intensifying flotation applications.

Abstract:Due to many problems such as pipe blockage, environmental pollution, and the difficulty of recovering precious metals, caused by extensive use of lime, the conventional program using lime (CaO) as the inhibitor and xanthates (e. g., sodium butylxanthate) (BX) as the collector has become increasingly restricted in use, and lime-free flotation processes are increasingly advocated. In this study, a novel process with Z200 as the collector and pyrogallic acid (PGA) as the inhibitor was innovatively proposed and applied to separate copper-gold sulfide ore and pyrite in Hubei Province, China. In laboratory experiments, this new reagent system achieved a substantially better separation of copper-gold sulfide ore and pyrite than the conventional process program. First-principles calculations based on density functional theory (DFT) were used to understand the separation mechanism of the new reagent scheme. The DFT simulations showed that PGA had a much stronger depression effect on pyrite than chalcopyrite, whereas Z200 exhibited a stronger collecting ability for chalcopyrite than pyrite, which together explains the effectiveness of the new reagent system at the molecular level. This work sheds some new light on the potential of adopting new and eco-friendly reagent schemes in the utilization of mineral resources.

Abstract:The fundamental surface properties of different particles play an important role in the hydrophobicity and flotation performance of minerals. In recent years, the influence of surface physical properties on the hydrophobicity and flotability of minerals has garnered significant attention, revealing a positive correlation between surface roughness and flotation performance. This paper analyzes the effects of roughness on the mineral characteristics and flotation process. An in-depth review of the methods for measuring and modifying mineral surface roughness to comprehensively analyze its effects on flotation performance is also included. The methods for modifying mineral surface roughness include physical methods, chemical methods and the utilization of nanoparticle collectors. Additionally, this paper explores the role of molecular simulation, a fast-approaching powerful tool for investigating reagent-mineral interactions. Here, the influence of changes in the molecular model of minerals on their wettability in simulation techniques is discussed, to facilitate the application of surface roughness in mineral flotation.
