Abstract:Cloud point extraction method developed in the recent years is a green sample preparation technique. This paper introduces the principle of cloud point extraction method, the main influence factors about cloud point extraction in detail. Recent development on the deternination of trace elements or speciation by cloud point extraction coupled to atomic spectrometry and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry since 2008 are summarized and discussed. At the same time, existing problems, the newest development trend and prospects for cloud point extraction technique are also discussed.

Abstract:This review addresses the use of cloud point extraction as a separation and pre-concentration method aiming at the speciation of metals and metalloids by spectroanalytical techniques. The principles, advantages and limitations of this technique are presented for a better understanding of its potential. The main strategies for using cloud point extraction in carrying out speciation analysis are discussed. To illustrate its applicability in the development of analytical methodologies aimed at speciation, some works found in the specialized literature are commented, highlighting their contribution to the theme. Finally, future trends for the development in this field (such as speciation of anionic species, cloud point micro extraction, speciation of nanoparticles, among others) is presented and discussed.

Abstract:Heavy metal pollution has been one of the major influencing factor to food safety, which attracts more and more attention from all over the world. Hence, it is very important to establish a new detection method of metal in food. Application of an emerging, green and environment benign separation and enrichment process, cloud point extraction were introduced, combined with atomic absorption spectroscopy. Cloud point extraction is economic, safe, simple and highly efficient, which has been widely used in the sample pretreatment of metal detections in food. This paper discussed the basic principle of cloud point extraction. Several factors were elaborated, such as the species and concentration of surfactants, pH values, equilibrium temperature and time, as well as the concentration of chelating reagents, which influenced the extraction efficiency and enrichment factor. In addition, the applications of cloud point extraction combined with the flame atomic absorbance spectroscopy on the metal determination in food were reviewed. Finally, the development trend of cloud point extraction technology in modern food detection was prospected.

Abstract:A HPLC method for determination of iron(Ⅱ),cobalt(Ⅱ) and nickel(Ⅱ) with TAN chelates on a ODS column by using methanol-water(volume ratio is 69:31) solution containing 4.5 m mol·L~(-1) CTMAB and acetate buffer(pH=5.5) as mobile phase after cloud point extraction with Triton X-114 was developed.The detection limit was 0.1μg·L~(-1) for iron(Ⅱ),0.1μg·L~(-1) for cobalt(Ⅱ),0.03 μg·L~(-1) for nickel(Ⅱ).Under the optimum conditions,most other metal ions do not interfere.The method can be applied to the simultaneous determination of trace amount of iron,cobalt,and nickelions in water samples.

Abstract:This review summarizes and discusses applications related to the determination of (ultra)trace elements in biological fluids using cloud point extraction as sample pretreatment technique. Biological fluids, such as urine, whole blood, serum or plasma, are the most often analyzed biological materials in these applications. Spectrometric methods, such as flame atomic absorption spectrometry, electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry, inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry, and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, are commonly used for quantification of elements preconcentrated by the extraction technique. Optimized extraction procedures lead to the high extraction recoveries of the target analytes. High enrichment factors achieved lead to the lowering of quantification limits. All these achievements illustrate the great potential of extractions for reliable quantification of (ultra)trace elements in complex biological matrix what is documented in this review of a number of works published on this topic.

Abstract:The knowledge of elemental speciation and interaction between elemental species and ligands (including biomolecules) can provide an understanding of their transport, transformation, bioavailability, metabolic pathways and toxicity in organisms. By taking advantage of the powerful separation capabilities of capillary electrophoresis (CE) in capillaries/microchannels, and the atomic specificity, multi-elemental characteristics and extremely high sensitivity of inductively coupled plasma spectrometries (ICPs), the CE-ICP hyphenation is one of the most preferred choices in elemental speciation and element-ligand/element-biomolecule interaction as well as the indirect determination of non-metallic compounds. This article provides an overview of electrophoresis in capillaries and microchannels coupled to an ICP with respect to interfaces and applications from elemental speciation, element-ligand interaction to indirect determination.

Abstract:A novel method, based on extraction induced by emulsion breaking, is proposed for rapid simultaneous determination of iron, manganese, copper, and zinc in jet fuel by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry. Several parameters affecting the extraction efficiency were investigated including the concentrations of nitric acid and emulsifying agents, centrifugal speed, and extraction time. The limits of detection for iron, manganese, copper, and zinc were 0.116, 0.028, 0.06, and 0.085 mu g L-1, respectively. The accuracy of the method was tested by the analysis of spiked samples (recovery percentages between 90% and 107% were observed) and by comparison with a well-established method.

Abstract:A simple, sensitive and selective cloud point extraction procedure (CPE) for separation of trace amount of iron in water, food and environmental samples perior to its determination by spectrophotometry has been developed. The CPE method is based on the reaction of Fe(II) with 7-(1,5-dimethyl-3-oxo-2-phenyl- 2,3-dihydro-1H-pyrazol-4-ylazo)-8-hydroxyquinoline-5-sulphonic acid (DPPAHS) as a new complexing agent yielding a complex at pH 4.5, which extracted in non-ionic surfactant Triton X-114. The total iron was determined after the reduction of Fe(III) to Fe(II) using ascorbic acid. The main parameters affecting the CPE efficiency, such as pH of sample solution, concentration of DPPAHS and Triton X-114, equilibration temperature and time, were investigated and optimized. Under the optimum conditions, the calibration curve was linear in the range of 5.0-140 ng mL-1 with R2 = 0.9994. The detection limit was 1.20 ng mL-1 with preconcentration and enrichment factors of 40 and 183, respectively. The interference of various cations and anions has been studied. The proposed CPE technique has been successfully applied for the determination of trace amount of iron in water, food and environmental samples with high efficiency and satisfactory results.

Abstract:Due to its environmental efficacy and economic effectiveness, a unique approach for extracting functional thermally sensitive bioactive components from food was recently developed. Cloud point extraction is one of the most effective alternative methods for extracting a wide range of organic and inorganic components from green surfactants. The extraction method is cloud point extraction by phase separation, which is a quick and easy approach that requires very little solvent and just a small amount of very non-flammable and non-volatile surfactant that is environmentally benign. The theoretical results of cloud point extraction's application in the food industry are summarized in this article. While presenting a series of introductions on how to extract cloud points, the benefits and applications of cloud points have been studied. The method of using cloud point extraction in food samples has been explained in this article. This method is simple, safe, cost-effective, and widely used to measure a variety of tissue samples, and it can detect analytes down to nanograms per millimeter. Spectrophotometric measurement of low levels of cadmium in some vegetables was also developed in the current study as one of the most important applications of the cloud point extraction method in the food industry.

Abstract:The concentration of heavy metals in drinking water is an important standard for water quality evaluation and water pipeline corrosion detection. This research reports the development of a new method based on cloud point extraction for the separation, preconcentration, and detection of lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), and iron (Fe) using flame atomic absorption spectrometry. This method was used because the concentration of metallic trace elements in the samples was lower than the limits of detection (LOD). The experimental LODs for Pb, Cd, and Fe, were 0.01, 0.01, and 0.3 ppm respectively, which were determined based on a significant sensitivity change in the slope of the standard curve. By using both 2,6-diamino-4-phenyl-1,3,5-triazine and 3-amino-7-dimethylamino-2-methylphenazine (Neutral Red) as chelating agents, and Triton X-114 as a surfactant, these metallic elements were enriched in water samples. The preconcentration procedure was optimized by varying the experimental factors such as temperature, equilibrium time, pH, and the concentration of the chelates and surfactant. After optimization, this method allowed the determination of these three trace elements with 20-times lower LODs and yielded recoveries of 99.8, 97.3, and 99.3% for Pb, Cd, and Fe, respectively.

Abstract:At the temperature above cloud point or in the presence of certain additives,an aqueous nonionic surfactant micelle solution was separated into a surfactant diluted phase and a coacervate phase.Solutes that originally present in this system were unevenly distributed into these two phases.This process is known as cloud point extraction.Based on the research results,the theory and application of the new solvent extraction technology were reviewed.The new application of cloud point extraction in microbial transformation was presented.

Abstract:The technique of separation and enrichment for floatation has been widely regarded due to lower cost,simple operation,better selectivity,high enriched multiple.The floatation analytes can be determined directly by spectrometry.In this paper,the research of separation and enrichment technique for floatation was anatomized based on the statistical result of literatures.The theory of key processes of floatation,like contact angle,surface potential and air bubble adsorptive capability was explained.The main factors influencing the floatation results,including pre-separated substance,pH of solution,surfactant,floatation addition agent,floatation temperature,air flow speed,ionic intensity and organic solvent,etc.were concluded.The current information on floatation of internal and overseas application was showed.The future research direction was mentioned.

Abstract:A new cloud point extraction——flame atomic absorption spectrometric(CPE-FAAS) method has been developed for the determination of trace iron.1-Nitroso-2-naphthol was selected as the complexing agent and Triton X-114 as the surfactant.The influences of pH value,concentrations of surfactant and complexing agent,and equilibrium temperature and time on the cloud point extraction efficiency and sensitivity of the method were investigated.Under optimal conditions,the calibration curve was linear over the concentration range of 1.25-50 μg·L-1 with a correlation coefficient of 0.996 and a detection limit of 0.42 μg·L-1.The enrichment factor for iron was 32.The proposed method was applied satisfactorily in the determination of trace iron in sea water,lake water and tap water.

Abstract:The cloud point extraction technique has become increasingly popular in recent years for trace metal separation and preconcentration. When heated to a specific temperature, cloud point extraction utilizes the property of nonionic surfactants in aqueous solutions to generate micelles and become turbid (so-called cloud point temperature). For analytical chemists, developing a simple and selective technology for the separation and determination of metals and medicinal drugs is a critical concern. Therefore, a sensitive, accurate, and green cloud point extraction (CPE) procedure was developed for the micro-determination of metal cations like zinc (II) and cadmium (II) in food samples. Triton X–114 and 1-(4-(Phenyldiazenyl) phenyl) azo naphthalene-2-ol (Sudan III) were used as extractants. Sudan III forms an ion-pair association complex with metal ions when the pH is 9. In the presence of 5 ppm zinc (II) or 4 ppm cadmium (II) in an aqueous solution, the maximum extraction efficiency should be achieved. In order to create Cloud Point Temperature (CPT) quantitatively, the extraction applications in this approach required heating at 85°C for 20 minutes. In this work, the impacts of different surfactants, pH, stoichiometry, and various organic reagents on interferences as well as spectrophotometric determination were explored. The linearity ranges of zinc (II) and cadmium (II) were 0.25-700 and 0.25-400 ppm, respectively. The results show low detection limits of 0.035 and 0.042 ppm for zinc (II) and cadmium (II), respectively. Also, the quantification limits for zinc (II) and cadmium (II) are 0.116 and 0.140 ppm, respectively.
