Abstract:This study investigates the complex interaction bet ween a lateral jet and the supersonic external flow, so as to provide fruitful understand ings of the effect of jet nozzle shapes and flow conditions, such as incidence angle, jet press ure and Mach number, on the reaction force. Flow solver FLUENT is utilized with SST turbulent model and patched grids for simulation. Four kinds of jet nozzle shapes with eq uivalent cross-sectional area (viz. circular, elliptical and wedge-shaped with opposite orientations) are investigated. The very good agreement between experimental and numerical studies for the circular nozzle credits the validity of current numerical investigations. H aving examined the pressure coefficient distributions and jet-interaction amplification fac tors, it is found that the elliptical jet nozzle, with its semi-major in the crosswise orient ations of external flow, will have larger separation region in size ahead of the jet orifice, which leads to the increase of the local pressure and enhances the jet-interaction amplifica tion factor, viz. improving the efficiency of lateral control. With the increase of incidence angle from -10° to 10°, the total normal force keeps reducing in the magnitude, thus the jet -interaction amplification factor keeps decrease. However, this decrease of total normal fo rce in magnitude with the increase of incidence angle is mainly due to the increase of pr essure force for the pure body without jet injection, which has opposite direction with the je t reaction force. Once subtracting the effect of incidence angle to the cases of no jet in jection, the influence of incidence angle to the lateral jet interaction is not so significant. Further investigations of the effect of jet static pressure and Mach number will provide more clues on the most important parameters, which will influence the jet-interactio n amplification factor significantly.
