We further improve the algorithm by showing a worst-case ratio of at most 5/2 + ε. Finally we devise a (2 + ε)-approximation algorithm. A number of restricted cases are also considered.

Abstract:We consider the following rectangle packing problem. Then we consider a restricted version of the problem and show a (2 + ε)-approximation algorithm. This restricted problem includes the case where rotation by 90° is allowed (and is possible), and the case of packing squares. We apply a similar technique to the general problem, and get an improved algorithm with a worst-case ratio of at most 5/2 + ε. Finally, we devise a (2 + ε)-approximation algorithm for the general problem.

Abstract:In online strip packing we are asked to pack a list of rectangles one by one into a vertical strip of unit width, without any information about future rectangles. The goal is to minimize the total height of strip used. The best known algorithm is First Fit Shelf algorithm (Baker and Schwarz in SIAM J. Comput. 12(3):508–525, 1983), which has an absolute competitive ratio of 6.99 under the assumption that the height of each rectangle is bounded from above by one. We improve the shelf algorithm and show an absolute competitive ratio of \(7/2+\sqrt{10}\approx 6.6623\) without the restriction on rectangle heights. Our algorithm also beats the best known online algorithm for parallel job scheduling.

Abstract:In this paper, we study 1-space bounded 2-dimensional bin packing and square packing. A sequence of rectangular items (square items) arrive one by one, each item must be packed into a square bin of unit size on its arrival without any information about future items. When packing items, 90°-rotation is allowed. 1-space bounded means there is only one “active” bin. If the “active” bin cannot accommodate the coming item, it will be closed and a new bin will be opened. The objective is to minimize the total number of bins used for packing all items in the sequence.

Abstract:A rectangular optimal layout method using particle swarm optimization is proposed. The problems of rectangular optimal layout can be translated into optimization problem in the field of arrangement problem,and then the particle swarm optimization algorithm with the self-adaptive modulate regulation is used to search the solution space efficiently in order to find the optimal solution of the layout. The feasibility of the proposed method is demonstrated by the layout example.

Abstract:Generating cutting patterns for rectangular blanks of a single size is a widespread problem in enterprise production.When the sheet length is longer than the blade length,how to cut the sheet is very important for the material utilization ratio.In this paper,based on continued fractions algorithm and branching-bounding algorithm,a new algorithm applied in cutting a long rectangular sheet into several sections is put forward.The experimental result shows that the algorithm in this paper could get better cutting patterns.

Abstract:A novel two dimensional irregular parts packing method using particle swarm optimization is presented. Firstly, the proposed method convert the problem of two dimensional irregular parts packing into rectangular parts packing problem by calculating the surrounding rectangle of irregular parts. Secondly, the particle swarm optimization algorithm was used to search for the optimal solution of the layout. The strategy of self-adaptive modulation is used to adjust the layout position of each rectangular part during the procedure of optimization. The solutions of two numerical examples show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

Abstract:The rectangular packing problem has been extensively studied over the years due to its wide application in industry. However, most of the research efforts are devoted to positioning techniques of the rectangles for various problem variants, the efficient implementation of the packing procedure is relatively less studied. In this paper, we propose an efficient constructive algorithm for the rectangular packing problem with rotations. We design a preprocess procedure with four data structures to store the information used for item selection. The gaps on the skyline are categorized into three types according to their associated edges for the placement procedure, during which the item is searched and packed in a descending order of the fitness value. The entire constructive phase takes a time complexity of O(nlogn). For the packing improvement phase, we optimize the packing through random perturbation on the sequence and orientation of the item. Three classes of stochastic problems are generated ranging from small-scale to extra-large-scale, the recorded running time confirms the efficiency of the proposed algorithm. We also test the proposed algorithm on the benchmark problem C21, N13, NT, Babu and CX, the computational results show that it delivers a good performance.

Abstract:Aiming at the problem of two dimensional irregular parts packing, a new optimal packing algorithm was proposed.In order to enhance the operation speed of the algorithm,the algorithm to calculate the least surrounding boxes was improved.In order to enhance the global convergence performance of the algorithm,the selection operator was improved by using elitist preservation strategy.In order to enhance the precision of the algorithm,the decoding algorithm was improved by using the Height Adjustment algorithm.Solutions of the numerical example showed the effectiveness of the algorithm.

Abstract:The bin packing problem has a wide range of applications in industry. With the upgrade of the task difficulty, the traditional 2d rectangular layout algorithm can no longer meet the needs of modern industry, such as express packing task and exoplanet ore collection task. The express or ore samples come in heterogeneous shapes so they cannot all be treated as rectangular pieces. In this paper, we propose a three-stage method called covering, corner-searching and occupying (C,S&O) to solve the two-dimensional multishape part packing problem. The objective of the packing problem variant is to ensure maximum use of the raw material and minimize the trim loss. The algorithm cannot make use of information about the sequence of future objects that are going to arrive, only knowing the shape and size of the coming one, and the coming part must be packed into the bin immediately after its arrival without buffering or readjusting. The method of C,S&O hybridizes the idea of "gold corners, silver edges and grass belly" in the Chinese game Go and the method of finding picture corners in machine vision. In the first stage, the rectangular bin and the coming part are transformed into matrix representation, and generating the position matrix that indicates possible ways of packing the part into the bin. In the second stage, the suitable layout position of the coming part is obtained using machine vision image processing technology for reference. The third stage is calculating the environment matching degree to determine the current optimal placement orientation. In order to facilitate the display of the simulation results, only three shapes of parts are considered in the simulation, rectangle, circle and triangle. The experimental results show the effectiveness of this method. Consulting the literature, it is found that this paper is the first to propose a layout method for multishape manufacturing parts.

Abstract:The rectangular packing problem is an NP-complete combinatorial optimization problem. This problem occurs widely in social production scenarios, with steel plate cutting being one example. The cutting scheme for the rectangular packing problem needs to be improved because, without the globally optimal solution, there are many unnecessary edges in the steel cutting process. Based on a practical roll-fed disc shearing steel plate optimization problem, this paper explores a generalized packing method for rectangles of special dimensions and abstractly condenses complex quantitative relationships to establish a multi-objective mixed-integer nonlinear programming model. An innovative algorithm design based on a genetic algorithm is established to plan the cutting scheme in a high-speed and efficient way. The outcome is a utilization rate of up to 92.73% for raw materials and a significant reduction in labor, providing a guide for practical production and processing tasks. The advantages and disadvantages of the model and algorithm are discussed, and it is concluded that this rectangular packing method has strong universality and generalization ability, allowing rectangular packing tasks with large data volumes to be completed within a short time.

Abstract:This paper presents a novel algorithm for optimal packing problem by combining ant colony algorithm with BLF (bottom-left-fill) heuristic approach. The proposed algorithm not only automatically looks for the best sequence of the polygons and each polygon's optimum rotation by ant colony algorithm but also implements the exact layout with the BLF heuristic algorithm. Moreover, the algorithm supports the parallel computation and facilitates quick convergence to the optimal solution. The experimental results show the effectiveness of our algorithm comparing with the other methods.

Abstract:To efficiently solve the problem of two-dimensional irregular polygon packing in actual production, a heuristic algorithm driven by design knowledge was proposed. No Fit Polygon（NFP） was used to judge the relative positions between irregular polygons, and a mathematical model of local fitness was established to measure the fitting degree of irregular polygons. Then, a mathematical model driven by design knowledge was established to evaluate the position of irregular polygons to be placed. A greedy algorithm based on local search strategy was used to complete the packing. The experimental testing of international common benchmark cases and comparison with existing intelligent optimization algorithms proved that the proposed algorithm had certain advantages in layout quality and time performance with high stability. Besides, the experimental test of the sample data in actual production proved that the proposed algorithm had the value of being applied to actual production applications.
An Optimization Method for CNC Laser Combination Cutting of Irregular Plate Remainders

Abstract:The key research question in this study is how to cut pieces in irregular plate remainders, because there are many irregular plate leftovers created during the CNC (Computer Numerical Control) process. This will increase material utilization and allow plate leftovers to be reused. One of the issues being researched is how to arrange plate remainders on the surface of the CNC machine; this issue is known as combination layout optimization. The other issue being researched is combination cutting-path optimization of plate remainders, which aims to determine the cutting path of parts of plate remainders. A genetic algorithm based on the gravity-center NFP (No-Fit Polygon) method was applied to optimize the layout pattern, and then the geometric coordinates of a part included in one plate remainder after packing were obtained by geometric transformation with the help of a three-layer graphic data correlation model, which quickly identified the inside and outside contours of parts. A colony algorithm based on the mathematical model of cutting-path optimization was used to optimize the cutting path of the parts in the plate remainders. Finally, some simulation tests were performed to illustrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method. The results of the algorithm for packing irregular shapes for some instances show that our algorithm outperforms the other algorithms. On most instances, the average plate utilization ratio using our algorithm, after running 20 times, is improved by 1% to 9% in comparison to the best plate utilization ratio using the tree search algorithm. The best idle travel of an example achieved by the algorithm in this paper is 7632 mm after running the cutting-path optimization algorithm 20 times, while that of the traditional equivalent TSP (Traveling Salesman Problem) algorithm is 11,625 mm, which significantly demonstrates the efficiency of the algorithm.

Abstract:This paper addresses a special case of irregular bin packing problem which the irregular pieces with free rotation have to fill a large irregular stock sheet with defective regions while satisfying the special boundary constraint, i.e., the piece can protrude from the sheet so long as the key points in the piece’s interior lie within the container. The objective of this problem is to maximize the number of filled pieces. To our best knowledge, the piece must be placed completely inside the sheet for all packing problem tackled by published literature. Thus, existing approaches are not good solutions to this special packing problem. To achieve the goal of automated arrangement of pieces and maximize the space utilization, the genetic algorithm and grey wolf optimization algorithm are designed to solve it. The genetic algorithm adopts the elitism strategy for maintaining the portion of the best chromosomes. A new method of updating the main controlling parameter is applied for reinforcing the exploration ability of the grey wolf optimization. These two algorithms use a vector of pieces as the solution representation, and a novel heuristic algorithm decodes it to produce a layout. The proposed heuristic algorithm divides the process of packing into two stages with the objective of satisfying constraints and achieving good space utilization of sheet. Computational experiments show that the presented methods can solve this new kind of the packing problem very well.

Abstract:In rail-vehicle manufacturing enterprises, material costs are main part of total costs, so nesting optimization and material quota is important for enterprise's cost control and supply chain management. Because most parts are rectangular, rectangular object layout is solved first in nesting optimization. Rectangular object layout is not a simple NP (nondeterministic polynomial) optimization problem because of the practical production rules, such as guillotine. Under certain situations, the guillotine is even more important than the pure using ratio of metal sheets. The purpose of this paper is to construct the model of genetic algorithm and design the genetic operators for a practical case. Combined with the lowest-horizontal-line search algorithm, Genetic algorithm model is applied into rectangular object layout optimization. Results show that the model can satisfy not only the practical production requirements of guillotine, but also the requirement for production convenience. In this way, users can get optimal layout results and a higher material using ratio for practical production effectively and quickly.
Optimal Rectangle Packing: An Absolute Placement Approach

Abstract:We consider the problem of finding all enclosing rectangles of minimum area that can contain a given set of rectangles without overlap. Our rectangle packer chooses the x-coordinates of all the rectangles before any of the y-coordinates. We then transform the problem into a perfect-packing problem with no empty space by adding additional rectangles. To determine the y-coordinates, we branch on the different rectangles that can be placed in each empty position. Our packer allows us to extend the known solutions for a consecutive-square benchmark from 27 to 32 squares. We also introduce three new benchmarks, avoiding properties that make a benchmark easy, such as rectangles with shared dimensions. Our third benchmark consists of rectangles of increasingly high precision. To pack them efficiently, we limit the rectangles coordinates and the bounding box dimensions to the set of subset sums of the rectangles dimensions. Overall, our algorithms represent the current state-of-the-art for this problem, outperforming other algorithms by orders of magnitude, depending on the benchmark.

Abstract:An efficiently packed, low-distortion parameterization with a short boundary can save a great amount of memory and improve both quality and efficiency of rendering. Existing packing methods begin with an input atlas (or parameterization), but the cuts in the input atlas may be not suitable for a high quality result. We propose a simple yet effective approach to cut an input surface and generate an atlas that comprehensively considers the packing efficiency, the mapping distortion and the boundary length. Viewing the desired cuts on the input mesh as the pullback of a low-distortion mapping from a polysquare boundary, we notice that the above three objectives actually imply a small number of cone singularities with angle deficit of pi 2 k, k is an element of Z, and orthogonally intersected short cuts passing through all singularities. Therefore, we first leverage a cross frame-field to identify a set of singularities and cancel some of them to balance their amount and atlas distortion. Then, the singularities remained are heuristically connected by short cuts which intersect with each other nearly orthogonally. Results show that our method produces a low -distortion and polysquare-like atlas with controllable number of singularities. Comparing with other atlas generation methods only focusing on distortion, taking our atlas as the input for the subsequent packing algorithm (Liu et al., 2019) is better than using previous cutting strategies on a benchmark containing 5519 cases, because the conflicts among those desired objectives for packing are alleviated at an early stage.(c) 2022 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:Rectangular Object Layout is not a simple NP (nondeterministic polynomial) optimization problem because of the practical production rules, such as guillotine. Under some situations, the guillotine is even more important than the pure using ratio of metal sheets. To improve the using ratio of stock sheets and to reduce the production costs, the genetic algorithm is adopted to optimize rectangular object layout on stock sheets. The purpose of this paper is to construct the model of genetic algorithm and design the genetic operators. Combined with the lowest horizontal line-search algorithm, Genetic Algorithm model is applied into rectangular object layout optimization. Results show that the model in the paper can satisfy not only the practical production requirements of guillotine, but also the requirement for production convenience. In this way, user can get optimal layout results effectively and quickly and a higher material using ratio at the same time for normal production practice.
