Abstract:In order to study the influence of the end-effector’s high speed contact with ground on the robot system when the hydraulically actuated multi-legged robot walks in a dynamic gait and realize its control as well, a single leg prototype of the bio-inspired hydraulically actuated multi-legged robot is developed. The robotic leg's structure is designed on the basis of research and analysis of the skeletons of the large dogs' hind limbs. The hip and knee cylinder layout are designed from the principle of rotating guide bar mechanism and swing guide bar mechanism, respectively. The torque of robotic leg's joint on stance phase is calculated on the basis of former biologists’ research results and the planned joint trajectory of dynamic trotting gait on stance phase. The former biologists have already researched the dynamic gait of large dogs and separately measured the ground reaction forces on individual limb of trotting dogs using a series of four force platforms; the dynamic trotting gait trajectory with a speed of 2.5 m/s is planned as composite cycloid foot trajectory on flight phase with the same body height on stance. And the composite cycloid’s foot trajectory is planned with the specifications: the stride length is 1 m, the stride height is 0.05 m, the period is 4 s, and the duty cycle is 50%. Based on the above bionic design, the mechanical parameters of the robotic single leg are determined: the length of thigh and shank is 0.35 m, the hip joint angle range is [-50°, 70°], the knee joint angle range is [-140°, -20°], the diameter of the cylinder piston is 0.02 m, the diameter of piston rod is 0.01 m, and the stroke length of the piston rod is 0.1 m. The virtual prototype of robotic single leg is designed via the three-dimensional modeling software Solidworks according to the design parameters. Furthermore, the feasibility of the parameters of the designed mechanical structure and hydraulic actuator is verified based on the dynamic vertical hopping simulation in MATLAB/Simulink. The dynamics of hydraulic single leg on flight phase and stance phase are formulated with the symbolic math toolbox of MATLAB, and the hydraulical single leg hopping control schemes on flight phase and on stance phase are designed, respectively. The conventional PID (proportion integration differentiation) controller is applied to control the angles of both joints at the desired angle values when the single leg is on flight phase; the cascade compliant control strategy is applied on stance phase. The initial condition of vertical hopping is that the single leg is dropped from the height of 0.65 m without vertical and horizontal velocity. The control parameter is set to make the single leg hop continuously to the desired height. The normal flow of the proportional servo valve with the differential pressure of 3.5 MPa is 0.67×10-3 m3/s. The dynamic hopping simulation experiment result shows that the single leg continuously hops to the height of 0.65 m, and the mean flow of hydraulic system is 5.6×10-5 m3/s when the hydraulic pressure is set to 16 MPa. At last the hydraulical single leg prototype is manufactured based on the virtual prototype of robotic single leg. It comprises the vertical hopping system with hydraulic power unit and the control system. The single legged vertical hopping experiment is successfully carried out on the hopping system. The single leg is able to hop continuously along the vertical guide rail when the parameters of conventional PID joint angle controller are set to reasonable values. The research of the paper provides the reference for the design of bionic multi-legged robot’s single leg.
Design Of A Mammal-Kike Hexapod Walking Robot

Abstract:This paper describes the design and control concepts of a mammal-like hexapod walking robot. It has a hexapod configuration and is driven by 12 digital servomotors which are controlled by main processor located on the main body. The novel mechanical design with 12 degrees of freedom is introduced as well as the hardware architecture of the control system. In this study, the alternative tripod gait is generated and realized by inverse kinematics method in the single-leg physical model with the foot trajectories planned. Dynamic calculation and simulation results demonstrate the validity of the design concept. The experiments prove that the robot could achieve the straight-line walking with good performance.

Abstract:Background: Hydraulic quadruped robots have broad application prospects. Control system design is the core content of robot design. However, the micro-controllers used in the past have shortcomings such as long sampling period and simple algorithm. Methods: An electric control system of the layered, distributed structure for hydraulically actuated quadruped robots is designed considering a dog as a bionic model. In order to improve the response time and the steady precision of the system at the same time, a Fuzzy–PID compound control algorithm is put forward in this paper. The hardware and software of the control system are designed. Results: The lower computer's control system for hydraulically actuated quadruped robots is developed using TMS320F28335 in series of DSP2000 as the core processor. Outside control circuit expands some external chips, such as AD7606, AD5754R, and PCA82C250, and a peripheral interface circuit is designed. Taking full advantage of the efficient processing power of the chip and the rich on-chip resources, the hardware circuit is simpler and reliable, and the software is also easy to implement. It is verified that the control system is rational and effective using experiments. Conclusions: The experimental results show that the control system designed in this paper is reasonable and can effectively control the joints of the quadruped robot. It has strong scalability and can meet the basic requirements of the autonomous mobile robot control system.

Abstract:Bionics is a subject that studies various excellent characteristics such as the structure, function and information control of organisms. These characteristics will give us a lot of inspiration in terms of mechanical design and will also provide new construction ideas for practical engineering applications. In this paper, based on the structural characteristics of the natural biological snake, a bionic snake-like robot with a meandering posture is designed. Bionic snake-like robot uses STM32F103ZET6 MCU and 16-way servo control board as the main control unit. The servo provides the driving force. Through the use of pulleys and various sensors, functions such as various attitude movements and real-time detection are realized. Using Solidworks software to carry out 3D modeling of the bionic snake-like robot and make a bionic snake-like robot model for experimental testing. The physical model size is 120mm*120mm*850mm. The results show that: on a relatively flat ground, the time for the bionic snake-like robot to move through a horizontal distance of 1m is about 5.50s. The bionic snake-like robot runs stably during the test and has no stuttering phenomenon.

Abstract:Bionic multi-legged robots with flexible bodies embody human ingenuity in imitating, learning, and exploring the natural world. In contrast to rigid-body robots, these robots with flexible bodies exhibit superior locomotive capabilities. The flexible body of the robot not only boosts the moving speed and walking stability but also enhances adaptability across complex terrains. This article focuses on the innovative design of flexible bodies. Firstly, the structural designs, including artificial spines and single/multi-axis articulation mechanisms, are outlined systematically. Secondly, the enhancement of robotic motion by flexible bodies is reviewed, examining the impact that body degrees of freedom, stiffness, and coordinated control between the body and limbs have on robotic motion. Thirdly, existing robotic control methods, organized by control architectures, are comprehensively overviewed in this article. Finally, the application prospects of bionic multi-legged robots with flexible bodies are offered, and the challenges that may arise in their future development are listed. This article aims to serve as a reference for bionic robot research.

Abstract:Traditional reconnaissance and detection platforms are constrained by the comprehensive conditions, such as the obstacle crossing ability, the concealment and the body size, and their reconnaissance capabilities are limited, and there are problems such as single adaptability to the terrain environment and poor concealment, which cannot fully meet the needs of military reconnaissance, cave detection, and post-disaster rescue. Therefore, a multi-section bionic robot is proposed, its overall mechanical structure and control system are designed, and experimental tests are carried out under grass, gravel, sand, steps and other terrains, and the results show that the multi-section bionic robot can adapt to a variety of complex terrains and geomorphology and improve reconnaissance capabilities.

Abstract:This paper presents a bio-inspired design of an artificial saltatorial leg for a jumping mini robot. By using a rebuilt traditional four-bar linkage mechanism, the artificial saltatorial leg is able to successfully imitate the characteristic of a real jumping insect, kinematically and dynamically. According to the simulation analysis, jumping performance is improved by choosing a better tibia/femur ratio and a proper mass center placement. By means of high speed camera experiment, the jumping characteristic among insect, dynamic model and robot is compared; the dynamic similarity between insect and the robot is shown at last.

Abstract:A novel legged robot with 6 limbs driven by 20 proprioceptive motors, named SDUHex, is proposed in this letter. The limbs located at the middle of the robot can work as manipulators or locomotors. The topology design of the multi-mode robot is introduced and the kinematics and dynamics of the robot leg is analysed. A hierarchical optimized whole body controller with virtual model active compliance, called VM-WBC, is proposed. This control method unified the foot locomotion and arm operation. The terrain adaptation strategy is proposed to improve the non-flat terrain passability. A series of locomotion and operation experiments are carried out on SDUHex to test the designed robot and control method. Robust locomotion of the robot is verified by lateral impact recovery and slope terrain adaptation experiments. Arm operation of the robot including single-arm pushing and dual-arm picking are experimented to highlight the novel multiplexing function of the robot limbs.

Abstract:Abstract The body structure of the multi joint bionic robot is designed and analyzed. According to the movement form of snake and caterpillar, a multi joint bionic robot is designed and manufactured based on the principle of bionics. Using SolidWorks software to establish the model, there are three parts: head joint, body joint and tail joint. The bionic robot uses 3D technology to be printed and make a physical prototype, and experiment with the prototype. It can imitate the movement of snakes and caterpillars, and realize snake movement, insect movement, turning, curling, lurking and other movements. Through the structural design, processing and manufacturing of the multi joint bionic robot, the movement shape is analyzed and adjusted to make its movement attitude completely similar to the biological shape.

Abstract:This paper presents the development of the bipedal robot platform, HTY, which is designed for operation in dangerous and unknown environments, with the ability to move in complex environments. The robot is equipped with a simple joint and structure layout to ensure a wide range of joint movements and has the ability to perceive the status of its foot. The modular design and scalability requirements are also met. The HTY bipedal robot has a total of 12 degrees of freedom, a height of 119 cm, and a weight of 54 kg. The developed motion planning and control framework is tested on both the Gazebo simulation platform and the physical robot, achieving stable walking. This paper mainly introduces the design concept and basic specifications of the robot.

Abstract:This Paper describes the progress of the control system design and implementation of THBIP-I humanoid robot over the past two years. This project involved three Laboratories responsible for lower limbs, upper limbs and general control respectively. The aim of this project is to construct a prototype anthropomorphic robot, which. can work in human daily enviromnent and can collaborate with human beings. The robot totally has 32 degree of freedoms and each joint is driven by a brushless DC electronic motor. Screw/nuts transmission mechanism is adapted in some joints of lower limbs to achieve compact and good dynamic performance. The control system of the robot has four subsystems: Remote Brain Work Station, Mobile Controller, Distributed Control Units and Sensor Processing Unit. At the Present State, the Lower limbs and upper limbs has been built and tested, and with the off line gait planning. The distributed Control Units use PID schemes to servo the pre-generated joint trajectories. Under this architecture, the robot can perform a stable walking with 30 centimeters step at 20 second per step. Advanced control schemes for dynamic walking and DSP-based Distributed Control Units are under developing and simulated in the computer software.

Abstract:Inspired by the crawling behavior of crabs and their structural characteristics, this work investigates a fourlegged soft robot which can climb over obstacles. Fabricating by the rubber material with super-elastic characteristics, the leg joint of the soft robot is driven to bend through the wire drawing mechanism. The leg structure of the soft robot can produce spatial motion and the four legs of the robot can move alternately through the periodic bending of the leg joint. The bending behaviors with large angle of leg joint is achieved due to different degrees of tension through the wire drawing mechanism. The hyper-elastic constitutive model is used to analyze the mechanism of the rubber part of the main body of the robot and we analyze the relationship between the pulling force of the wire drawing structure and the bending angle of the leg. Thus, the relationship between the steering gear angle and the quadruped position of the robot is obtained through the geometry. The simulation provides a simple way to optimize the main body of the robot to achieving performances such as stress, strain, and fatigue life. This work further helps in the development of soft robots which can deliver items over obstacles.

Abstract:Ants are six-legged insects that can carry loads ten times heavier than their body weight. Since having six-legs, they are intrinsically stable. They are powerful and can carry heavy loads. For these reasons, in this paper a new parallel kinematic structure is proposed for a six-legged ant robot. The mechanical structure is designed and optimized in Solidworks. The mechanism has six legs and only two DC motors actuate the six legs so from mechanical point of view the design is an optimal one. The robot is lightweight and semiautonomous due to using wireless modules. This feature makes this robot to be suitable to be used in social robotics and rescue robotics applications. The transmitter program is implemented in supervisor computer using LabVIEW and a microcontroller is used as the main controller. The electronic board is designed and tested in Proteus Professional and the PCB board is implemented in Altium Designer. Microcontroller programming is done in Code Vision.

Abstract:This paper carried out a series of designs, simulations and implementations by using the physical-like mechanism of a bionic quadruped robot dog as a vehicle. Through an investigation of the walking mechanisms of quadrupeds, a bionic structure is proposed that is capable of omnidirectional movements and smooth motions. Furthermore, the kinematic and inverse kinematic solutions based on the DH method are explored to lay the foundation for the gait algorithm. Afterward, a classical compound pendulum equation is applied as the foot-end trajectory and inverse kinematic solutions are combined to complete the gait planning. With appropriate foot–ground contact modeling, MATLAB and ADAMS are used to simulate the dynamic behavior and the diagonal trot gait of the quadruped robot. Finally, the physical prototype is constructed, designed and debugged, and its performance is measured through real-world experiments. Results show that the quadruped robot is able to balance itself during trot motion, for both its pitch and roll attitude. The goal of this work is to provide an affordable yet comprehensive platform for novice researchers in the field to study the dynamics, contact modeling, gait planning and attitude control of quadruped robots.

Abstract:In this paper, a fully autonomous humanoid robot distribution motion control system is designed. The underlying control unit of the control system uses dual DSP as the main processor and FPGA control block as the DSP peripheral complex decoding circuitry and the multiplier and the phase discriminator. First of all, the design process of the processor's peripheral devices and the feedback loop are given. Then, a self-adjusting PID control strategy based fuzzy rules was proposed with the cutting-edge control theory. Moreover, the results of the MATLAB simulation show that the control system can be integrated in the robot's body, and has a clear level and flexible structure. As a result, the control system will play an active role in the further development of the whole autonomous humanoid robots.

Abstract:This design proposes a bionic crab robot with eight bionic legs and two front claws that is designed to realize the complex movements of the robot can be achieved using two electric motors. In this design, the eight legs of the robot walking mechanism employ an innovative Klann crank rocker. Two sets of 5R-2P linkage mechanism are used as the gripping arm of the crab robot, and two sets of 3R-1P linkage mechanism are used as the claw clamp of the crab robot. In this paper, a 3D digital prototype model of a dual-drive bionic crab robot is meticulously designed. The walking gait of the robot in straight running and turning is analyzed experimentally. The stability margin method is used to calculate and analyze the stability of the robot under static and dynamic conditions. Combining ADAMS and MATLAB/Simulink, the kinematics model of the robot is established and simulated. Experiments of straight running and obstacle avoidance are carried out for the prototype crab robot. The dual-drive bionic crab robot has a carefully designed structure that is capable of stable movement along a specified gait trajectory. The dual-drive design provides a solid theoretical basis for the development and practical application of this kind of robot.

Abstract:To increase the knowledge and exploit new resources beyond the Earth, planetary surface exploration on the Moon or Mars attracts significant attention around the globe. Due to the fact that these planetary surfaces are widely covered by soil-like materials, various structures of planetary rovers have been proposed to adapt to the terrains. Nonetheless, the traditional rover structures, such as wheeled and leg-wheeled, have shown limitations in moving on granular soils. To improve the mobility, this paper proposes a multi-toe quadruped robot inspired by the desert chameleon animal. The key features are that each bionic foot possesses four toes to stabilize them on granular materials. Moreover, a bionic flexible spine is designed to coordinate with walking and turning gaits and to make the robot approach an animal-like mobility. To assess the robot performances, kinematics analysis and analytical modeling of foot, leg, and spine movements are carried out. The results demonstrate that this robot can effectively walk and turn in accordance with the adopted gaits. Finally, field tests of moving over sands have been conducted. It shows that the robot can stably walk and turn on sands, which indicates that it is adaptable to planetary granular terrains.

Abstract:Traditional mechanism design and artificial planning based motion control is complicated. The produced gaits are inflexible with a slow motion. In order to realize animal-like motions, we designed mechanical structure of a quadruped robot to complete pitch motion by mimicking mammal's body. Referred to the leg motion pattern of mammals, joint motion trajectories were shaped and motion relationship of knee and hip joints was formulated for the quadruped robot. We built a netted model of biological central pattern generator (CPG) by connecting Matsuoka's oscillators via a weighted digraph, and used it as rhythmic motion controller for the quadruped robot. Proved by simulations and experiments, these designs are effective. The quadruped robot can walk quickly, naturally and smoothly. We also conducted researches on the influences of joint-configuration style on performances of robot. The result is the centrosymmetric joint configurations are beneficial for slipping-inhibition, and can improve the stability of motion
