Abstract:Detailed flow characteristics in the volute casing of centrifugal pump were studied using the CFD method. The computational domain was made up of impeller passages, volute casing, impeller side chamber and seal clearance. Under the hypothesis of steady flow, the RANS equations in multiple reference frames and RNG k-ε turbulence model were used to simulate the whole flow fields. The good agreement of computational and experimental performance parameters shows that the CFD method is appropriate for the present study. By revealing the pathlines of fluid released from different circumferential positions on the outlet of impeller, it is found that fluid in the volute casing has the distinct characteristics of layered flow, and the fluid from the impeller passages most near the volute tongue is the major component that leads to disk friction loss and volume loss.

Abstract:To clarify the complex relation between the pump blade shape and its corresponding hydraulic performance, the knowledge mining method of centrifugal pump impeller based on proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) was proposed. The pump blade shape was parameterized by cubic Bezier curve. The Latin hypercube design method was employed to supply the necessary samples for producing the perturbations of blade wrap angle, and blade angle at inlet and outlet. The hydraulic efficiency and head were optimized by NSGA-II and RBF hybrid algorithm. The Pareto-optimal solutions were obtained. In order to further illustrate the relationship between the centrifugal pump blade shape and its hydraulic performance, the POD method was used to discover the effects of optimized blade shape to the flow solutions. For the optimization of centrifugal pump MH48-12.5, blade shape and relative velocity field in impeller from Pareto-optimal solutions were analyzed. The results demonstrate that larger blade angle and smaller wrap angle increase the average kinetic energy in impeller, resulting in higher pump head design. Smaller blade angle and larger wrap angle decrease the velocity gradient from the pressure side to suction side, resulting in smaller hydraulic loss and higher efficiency design.

Abstract:Abstract Centrifugal pump is widely used in many important fields such as large hydropower station, urban central heating, aerospace engineering, etc. It has high requirements for cavitation performance and hydraulic performance in actual use. This study centers around on a pipeline pump with a specific speed of 360, reconstructs the impeller in TURBOdesign, takes important parameters of the impeller as the input conditions for optimization, aims at enhancing the blade’s minimum pressure and curtailing the flow losses in the blade channel and progressively optimize the meridional-blade loading based on the inviscid flow which was carried out by using genetic algorithm. The optimization leverages genetic algorithm, progressively optimizing the impeller using meridional and blade loading. By analyzing the effects of meridional and blade loading parameters on cavitation and hydraulic performance, it is found that the optimized models’ NPSH are much better than the original one. It’s approved that this optimization method is valid.
Numerical Simulation of Flow in Centrifugal Pump with Complex Impeller

Abstract:Based on the Navier-Stokes equations and the Spalart-Allmaras turbulence model, three dimensional turbulent flow fields in centrifugal pump with long-mid-short blade complex impeller are calculated and analyzed numerically. The relative velocity and pressure distributions in the flowpart are obtained. It is found that the flow in the passage of the complex impeller is unsymmetrical due to the joint action between volute and impeller. The back-flow region is at inlet of long-blade suction side, near middle part of long-blade pressure side and outlet of short-blade suction side. The flow near volute throat is affected greatly by volute. The relative velocity is large and it is easy to bring back flow at outlet of the complex impeller near volute throat. The static and total pressure rise uniformly from inlet to outlet in the impeller. At impeller outlet, the pressure periodically decreases from pressure side to suction side, and then the static pressure sharply rise near the throat. The experimental results show that the back flow in the impeller has an important influence on the performance of pump.
Simulation and Experiment the Hyperbola Profile in the Impeller Meridional Plane of Engine Water Pump

Abstract:The impeller axial figure of water pump was designed by the method of the meridian hyperbola figure,according to the principle of the flow in a sector which follows liquid flow law.This way supplies a simple and available method for the engineers who embark on the impeller design.It can't not only avoid the complication of conventional way but also turn away the randomicity of experiential method.The model was built by CAD and was analyzed by CFD.The result was shown that the reversed flows and the twice flows was evidently reduced.At the same time experiment verified that the head and efficiency of the pump was improved distinctly,which installed such impeller.

Abstract:The model of fiber-flow coupling and the solving procedures are presented. The method is applied to the numerical simulation of the fiber suspension through the stock pump impeller. The results show that, the fiber orientations change drastically in the vicinity of the inlet; near the concave wall region the orientations flip obviously; and along the mid-streamline and the streamline close to the convex wall, the orientations become more stable. The extra stress is significant along the concave wall close to the inlet, and it becomes uniform in the middle region and the downstream region. The results are further extended to the design of the stock pump impeller. Four design criterions are obtained as follows: the large radius of curvature on the first one third part of the blade, the channel expansion angle criterion, the large wrap angle criterion, and the blade outlet angle criterion. These criterions are added into the existing optimization system based on hydraulic design criterions. A stock pump impeller design system is developed. Then a new stock pump impeller is designed and the tested pump efficiency is 6% more than the original machine, and is 3% more than the Chinese stock pump standard.
Optimal design and numerical simulation for impeller of centrifugal pump with medium-high specific speed

Abstract:Based on continuity equation and motion equation of fluids, the flow field of quasi-three-dimensional direct problem was solved through iterative calculation for two kinds of stream surfaces. The distribution of axis plane velocity in medium-high specific speed centrifugal pump impeller was obtained. Based on the flow field of the direct problem, the inverse problem of centrifugal pump impeller was designed by drawing blade shape with point-by-point integration, thickening blade and smoothing leading edge of the blade through conformal mapping. The impeller was not finally accomplished until the iterative calculation of direct and inverse problems were converged. The three-dimensional flow fields of the centrifugal pump impeller designed were simulated with RNG k-ε turbulent model and SIMPLEC algorithm. The distributions of pressure and velocity field inside the impeller were obtained. The simulation results show that pressure distribution inside the impeller designed here is well uniform. The flow inside impeller is steady without separation. The energy distribution at impeller outlet is reasonable. The impeller designed by this method has superior hydraulic performance.

Abstract:To analyze the internal flow in screw centrifugal pulp pump and make the basis of hydraulic model optimizing,commercial CFD code Fluent was used to simulate the single-phase flow and solid/liquid two-phase flow in screw centrifugal pump.The modeling method of screw impeller and simulation method of flow field were introduced.Velocity distributing and pressure distributing in the pump were analyzed,and the hydraulic performance of the pump was predicted based on flow simulation.The simulation result agrees well with the experimental result in the single-phase flow condition.Ulteriorly,the solid phase and liquid phase distributing in the screw centrifugal pump under given solid phase consistency and granule diameter was analyzed by solid/liquid two-phase flow simulation.It put up good referenced value in screw centrifugal pump model optimizing.
Direct and Inverse Iterative Design Method for Centrifugal Pump Impellers

Abstract:A combined direct and inverse iterative design method was developed for the hydraulic design of centrifugal pump impellers. This method is based on the fluid continuity and motion equations and solves for the meridional velocity taking into account the effects of the blade shape on the flow. The blade shape is drawn by point-by-point integration with blade thickening and smoothing using conformal mapping. Two examples designed using the direct and inverse iterative design method are compared to results using the traditional design method with significantly different meridional velocity distributions and three-dimensional blade shapes. Numerical simulations and tests show that the highest pump efficiency is 2.2% higher with this design method than with the traditional design method. The numerical results agree well with the experiments with a smoother flow pattern than with the traditional design, especially in the volute.

Abstract:Based on the two-dimension theory, a computer code is made in FORTRAN language to design the high specific speed mixed-flow pump. The theory and method in calculating meridional velocity distribution by streamline iteration, drawing blade shape by point-by-point integration, thickening blade and smoothing leading edge and trailing edge of the blade by conformal mapping are introduced. The effects of several parameters on the designed impeller shape are also discussed, including hub/shroud radius ratio, velocity moment distribution function on the meridional streamline, position of blade inlet and outlet edge. This computer code can increase the efficiency of design work and the accuracy of calculating results. The data of the blade’s surface is complete which is convenient for blade manufacturing by numerical control machine. It provides a useful tool for designing the impeller of high specific speed mixed-flow pump.
Hydraulic Optimization and Loss Analyses of a Low Specific-Speed Centrifugal Pump with Variable-Thickness Blades

Abstract:This paper investigates the hydraulic and dynamic performance of a low specific-speed centrifugal pump with CFD simulation. Three different impellers are designed with different thickness distributions along the same mean line of the blades. The entropy production is introduced to study the energy losses in the three models and the energy loss distributions of the whole flow passages are fully revealed. The simplified energy loss equation is carefully validated by comparing the thermodynamic efficiency to the traditional hydraulic efficiency, and the errors between them can be considered acceptable. The circumferential Euler head distribution out of the impeller is used to predict the uniformity of the flow into the volute. To obtain the transient flow characteristics, the sliding mesh technique and the unsteady CFD simulation are applied and the pressure pulsations in the volute are well captured. The head fluctuation intensities of the three models are quantitatively compared under constant flow rate. The results show that the thickness distribution can affect the hydraulic performance to a large extent, and it can strongly affect the pressure pulsation in the volute.
Effects of Meridional Flow Passage Shape on Hydraulic Performance of Mixed-flow Pump Impellers

Abstract:During the process of designing the mixed-flow pump impeller, the meridional flow passage shape directly affects the obtained meridional flow field, which then has an influence on the three-dimensional impeller shape. However, the meridional flow passage shape is too complicated to be described by a simple formula for now. Therefore, reasonable parameter selection for the meridional flow passage is essential to the investigation. In order to explore the effects of the meridional flow passage shape on the impeller design and the hydraulic performance of the mixed-flow pump, the hub and shroud radius ratio (HSRR) of impeller and the outlet diffusion angle (ODA) of outlet zone are selected as the meridional flow passage parameters. 25 mixed-flow pump impellers, with specific speed of 496 under the design condition, are designed with various parameter combinations. Among these impellers, one with HSRR of 1.94 and ODA of 90° is selected to carry out the model test and the obtained experimental results are used to verify accuracies of the head and the hydraulic efficiency predicted by numerical simulation. Based on SIMPLE algorithm and standard k - ɛ two-equation turbulence model, the three-dimensional steady incompressible Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equations are solved and the effects of different parameters on hydraulic performance of mixed-flow pump impellers are analyzed. The analysis results demonstrate that there are optimal values of HSRR and ODA available, so the hydraulic performance and the internal flow of mixed-flow pumps can be improved by selecting appropriate values for the meridional flow passage parameters. The research on these two parameters, HSRR and ODA, has further illustrated influences of the meridional flow passage shape on the hydraulic performance of the mixed-flow pump, and is beneficial to improving the design of the mixed-flow pump impeller.
Large Eddy Simulation of Energy Gradient Field in a Centrifugal Pump Impeller

Abstract:Large eddy simulation of the fluid flow in a centrifugal pump impeller is conducted at design load and quarter load, and the energy gradient field is analyzed to reveal the behavior of internal flow. A universal equation for calculating the energy gradient function, which is defined as the ratio of energy increase (transversal gradient of the mechanical energy gradient) to energy loss (stream-wise gradient of the work done by shear stress), is adopted. Research results show that positive and negative 0.3 for the logarithm of energy gradient function are critical values that reflect dominant energy increase and dominant energy loss, respectively. The large eddy simulation results indicate that the magnitude and shape of energy gradient field are affected by turbulent fluctuation. The energy gradient field in the impeller at mid-height has more small-scale features than those in the impeller at zero and one heights. The regions of dominant energy increase and dominant energy loss are highly distinct at both design load and quarter load. In some large areas, neither dominant energy increase nor dominant energy loss is observed at quarter load in the impeller passage. These results, which are mainly attributed to a highly separated flow, are not evident at design load. The region of dominant energy increase at design load is larger than that at quarter load, particularly close to the volute. The magnitude of mean logarithm of energy gradient function at quarter load is evidently smaller than that at design load, but its value remains higher than 1.0.

Abstract:In order to understand the flow patterns through a semi-open impeller of centrifugal pump for solid-liquid two-phase flow, the three-dimensional turbulent flow through the impeller under design and off-design operating conditions is investigated by numerical flow analysis. The SIMPLEC algorithm with body-fitted coordination and staggering grid system is used for the solution procedure of the discretized equations based on the Navier-Stokes equations and the standard k - ε model. The calculated result for pressure distribution is compared with experimental data, which is measured on the spring casing in suction side of the pump. And the good agreement is shown between the calculated result and experimental one.

Abstract:The traditional design method based on one-dimension theory is not suitable for the design of a high specific-speed centrifugal pump due to its broad flow passage and twisted blade. This paper treats a submersible dredge pump impeller with a high specific-speed (ns=271) designed by using the conventional velocity coefficient method, and the three dimensional flow field inside the pump was numerically simulated. Based on the internal flow of the pump and the boundary vorticity flux (BVF) method, the design optimization for the pump impeller was conducted by adjusting the geometrical parameters and modifying the meridional shape of the blade. Those results indicate that the hydraulic performance of the pump was improved by the impeller design optimization; The BVF based flow field diagnosis method is helpful for capturing effectively the flaw of unfavorable flows and depicting the direction for optimizing the impeller blade.

Abstract:<p>The objective of this study is to analyse the quantitative relationship between the local Euler head distribution and the internal flow in a centrifugal impeller and provide guidance for the design specifications of inverse design methods. The local Euler head at the inlet is mainly affected by the clockwise vortex on the blade suction side. At the outlet, it is affected by the relative motion of clockwise and counterclockwise vortexes. The effect of the two types of vortexes on the local Euler head makes the pump head almost constant under deep part-load conditions, proving that the impeller has an effective diameter. The mean local Euler head distribution along the impeller passage is closely interrelated with the flow pattern. The position in which the mean local Euler head increases fastest coincides with the radial position of the clockwise vortex centre. The position of its maximum value is consistent with the radial position of the end of the clockwise vortex. The position of its maximum value moves towards the inlet as the flow rate decreases, confirming the impeller has an extreme impeller diameter. The inflection points of the mean local Euler head ratio curve correspond to the appearance of vortex structures.</p>

Abstract:The internal flow field in submersible centrifugal pump is researched based on CFD,and numeric results of the impeller and vaned diffuser under three different operating conditions are discussed and analysed.Many phenomena of the bad-behaved flow in the centrifugal pump are observed from the simulation results,and factors which influence the efficiency of the centrifugal pump are studied.Simulation results reveal the well-behaved flow field at design load and the bad-behaved flow field which results in low efficiency at off-design load.The results also display the impeller's good hydraulic properties and the vaned diffuser's imperfect hydraulic properties and low efficiency.

Abstract:The authors take a medium specific speed centrifugal pump with twisted blades as research object,and using given parameters,draw the axial projection figure of the impeller、spiral case section figure and spiral case plane figure.Then the components are modeled in three dimension by using software UG NX6.0.The 3D fluid zone model in parosolid form,which is exported by software UG,is imported to ICEM CFD,and meshed by grid tool CFX.ANSYS CFX12.1 is adopted to simulate the internal flow field and forecast the performance of the centrifugal pump.As a result,the centrifugal pump's extra characters such as head,shaft power etc in design conditions and several typical off-design conditions are obtained.At last,the flow rate-head figure,flow rate-efficiency figure are drawn by software OriginPro 8.The results indicate that the pump's head decreases as the flow rate increases,efficiency increases first and then decreases.The study provides important reference to designers.

Abstract:In this work, the comparative study has been done for five kinds of design methods of the low specific speed centrifugal pump impeller adopted numerical simulation method by software of Fluent, so that the problems can be solved. Many different design methods exists for the low specific speed centrifugal pump impeller, which caused the design effect difficult to control. The numerical simulation method based on the Reynolds time averaged N-S equations (RANS) and RNG κ-ε turbulence models. Results revealed the inner flow pattern of these impeller, and these results were verified by external characteristic experiment. The research results showed that the design method, which adopted compound impeller with short blades and these short blades turned to the suction surface of long blades. Results proved that its flow distribution is even and external characteristic curve is more ideal.
Analysis of key parameters for mixed-flow pump impeller design

Abstract:Based on an iterative design method, a series of mixed-flow pump impellers were designed by setting different values of some key parameters, such as velocity moment distribution and positions of the leading and trailing edges. The three-dimensional flow field of a mixed-flow pump impeller was simulated by solving the Navier-Stokes equations and a RNG k-ε turbulent model with the SIMPLEC algorithm, and the distributions of velocity and pressure fields inside the impeller were obtained. The simulated data were used to analyze the effects of key parameters and evaluate the impeller designs. The results show that the blades designed on the velocity moment distribution of parabolic-like type, are the strongest in controlling flow directions and the best in hydraulic performance. An appropriate increase in the meridional distance between the blade's leading and trailing edges can improve the internal flow and enhance the hydraulic efficiency, but a too great distance leads to efficiency loss due to skin friction. © Copyright.
