Abstract:Energetic hollow microcapsules (EHMs) were designed as dual-functional sensitizers for emulsion explosive with pentane/TiH2 and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) as core and shell, respectively. SEM and particle size analyses showed that the PMMA/TiH2 energetic microcapsules had spherical morphology, narrow size distribution and internal hollow structure. The results of detonation performance and thermal safety experiments showed that the EHMs could be added in emulsion explosive as composite energetic sensitizers, which could provide "hot spots" and improve the detonation performance of emulsion explosive without affecting its safety. This method introduces an innovative way for the development of insensitive high-energy emulsion explosive, which would be applied to engineering blasting for hard rock mining and some military fields.

Abstract:Polymeric(hollow) sub-micro/nanocapsule is a kind of composite particle with special morphology,which synthesis techniques has become one of the research hotspots in the field of nanometer science.The approaches of self-assembly,template,dendrimer and miniemulsion polymerization and their recent developments are described in detail,as well as the prospects,advantages and disadvantages of each approach.Moreover,the approach of miniemulsion polymerization has big potentials and wide prospect for the industrialization of polymeric(hollow) sub-micro/nanocapsules as its simple,environment-friendly and efficient preparation technique.Especially,the interfacially confined reversible addition fragmentation transfer(RAFT) miniemulsion polymerization combines the living polymerization of RAFT polymerization with the droplet nucleation mechanism of miniemulsion polymerization,the structure(size,morphology and thickness of shell) and compose(polymeric shell and functional group) of the polymeric(hollow) sub-micro/nanocapsules sub-micro/nanocapsule can be exactly tuned by the RAFT miniemulsion polymerization,and the polymeric nano-shell with much higher crosslinking degree can be fabricated.

Abstract:Microcapsules with epoxy curing agent were successfully prepared by an in-situ polymerization route with epoxy resin and poly-(urea-formaldehyde) as core and shell materials, respectively. The synthetic conditions were optimized by a comprehensive investigation on raw materials consumption, size distribution, and surface morphology. Preparation of microcapsules with high wrap ratio was also demonstrated. The as-synthesized microcapsules were studied using various characterizations techniques, including optical microscope, fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, and contact angle meter. Spherical microcapsules (size: similar to 60 mu m) with smooth surface were obtained when the stirring rate was 400 rpm and the amount of core materials is 76 wt %. (C) 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract:A novel energetic microsphere with multicore hollow structure and uniform particle size is prepared by an improved suspension polymerization-thermal expansion method with methyl methacrylate, azodicarbonamide (AC) and TiH2 powder as monomer, blowing agent and core material, respectively. The energetic hollow microspheres (EHMs) can play double roles as sensitizers and energetic additives in emulsion explosive, and experimental results show that the EHMs could increase the power of emulsion explosive without affecting its safety. This method provides a completely new idea for the development of high energy emulsion explosive.

Abstract:In order to solve the sloughing problem of explosives in upward blast holes, a novel underground mining emulsion explosive with thickening microcapsules was developed. The microcapsules in the emulsion explosive would be damaged by high-speed shearing at the moment of entering the blast hole, releasing their internal thickening agents to the emulsion explosive in the blast holes. These thickening agents were evenly distributed with a linear network structure in the emulsion explosive to make it thickened in the hole. The microcapsules were spherical and could encapsulate the thickening agent effectively, and the viscosity of the emulsion matrix with 2 mass % of them was close to that of the reference emulsion matrix at ca. 127.9 Pa s. Experimental results of TG-DSC and detonation performance showed that the novel underground mining emulsion explosive had a good thermal stability and its detonation velocity was 5133 m s(-1) and still up to 4618 m s(-1) after storing at the temperature of -20 degrees C for 12 h. The novel underground mining emulsion explosive with thickening microcapsules not only achieved the goal of thickening in the blast holes, but also had excellent detonation performance and low-temperature resistance capability.

Abstract:The present article focuses on a facile and versatile technique of emulsion droplet template method, developed for preparing novel microcapsules. Colloid particles adsorb on the surface of the emulsion droplets and self-assemble into an ordering spherical solid shell. Cross-linking and fixing the shell, the novel capsule "colloidosome", which is composed of a close-packed shell of colloid particles, can be fabricated. The strategy outlined readily affords the facility of fabrication and precise control over the size, permeability, mechanical strength of the capsules. Consequently these capsules have potential applications in functional foods, drug delivery, biomedicine, especially cell transplant.

Abstract:Microcapsules are versatile delivery vehicles and widely used in various areas. Generally, microcapsules with solid shells lack selective permeation and only exhibit a simple release mode. Here, we use ultrathin-shell water-in-oil-in-water double emulsions as templates and design porous ultrathin-shell microcapsules for selective permeation and multiple stimuli-triggered release. After preparation of double emulsions by microfluidic devices, negatively charged shellac nanoparticles dispersed in the inner water core electrostatically complex with positively charged telechelic α, ω -diamino functionalized polydimethylsiloxane polymers dissolved in the middle oil shell at the water/oil interface, thus forming a porous shell of shellac nanoparticles cross-linked by telechelic polymers. Subsequently, the double emulsions become porous microcapsules upon evaporation of the middle oil phase. The porous ultrathin-shell microcapsules exhibit excellent properties, including tunable size, selective permeation and stimuli-triggered release. Small molecules or particles can diffuse across the shell, while large molecules or particles are encapsulated in the core, and release of the encapsulated cargos can be triggered by osmotic shock or a pH change. Due to their unique performance, porous ultrathin-shell microcapsules present promising platforms for various applications, such as drug delivery.

Abstract:The fabrication of hollow microspheres to encapsulate functional molecules, such as drugs, insecticides, and proteins, is of ever-increasing importance. Many chemical and physicochemical methods have been tested for various specific encapsulations, but most of them have not been developed into an industrial process. In this work, we present a straightforward method to prepare liquid core-polymer shell microcapsules by first templating an oil-in-water emulsion stabilized by an interfacial monolayer of polystyrene latex particles (often referred to as "Pickering emulsion"), and subsequently locking the assembled particles into a robust polymeric shell through the precipitation of a biodegradable polymer poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) at the interface. The resultant microcapsules that have a solid polymeric enveloped around the oil droplets are stable and retain their integrity during the drying in air. Therefore, they should have great potential to serve as vehicles for encapsulating functional molecules especially hydrophobic in nature.

Abstract:A novel biocompatible shell-crosslinked nanocapsule system was developed based on nanoemulsion templates stabilized by a class of food proteins. The nanoemulsion templates were prepared using a combination of mechanical mixing and high-pressure homogenization, while the nanocapsule shell formed simultaneously through calcium ions-induced crosslinking of the food proteins. These core–shell structured nanocapsules with a particle size of about 200nm showed high drug-loading capacity and well improved stability in comparison with their nanoemulsion counterpart. The nanocapsule suspension can be freeze-fried directly; and the solidified nanocapsules can be well reconstituted in water, retaining their original particle size. It is concluded that the nanoemulsion-templated core–shell structured nanocapsules can be used as novel drug delivery systems with high loading capacity for poorly water-soluble drugs as well as well improved long-term and storage stability. Furthermore, the presence of surface food proteins introduces carboxyl and amine moieties, which enables the nanocapsules to anchor ligands, suggesting its potential application in targeting drug delivery, bioimaging and therapeutics.

Abstract:Microcapsules containing water-soluble ammonium persulfate (APS) cores as gel breakers that offer controlled burst release, are become increasingly important in improving the gel breaking efficiency of fracturing fluids in oil fields. To date, microcapsules with various control slow release behaviors have been thoroughly investigated, but microcapsules with burst release properties are rarely studied. Here, we reported a novel inverse emulsion polymerization method to exploit this new type of microcapsule. The microcapsules were composed of APS cores and stimuli-responsive P(MMA-co-AA) copolymer shells. The microcapsules have spherical structures with diameters of 10 to 16 μm. The encapsulated cores offer controlled burst release from the microcapsules and their beginning time of burst release could be delayed up to 42 h. Moreover, all of the cores could be completely released within 1 h from the microcapsules. The temperature, pH, and salt concentration change could stimulate the release. These novel microcapsules might have promising applications in oil exploration, batteries, monomer polymerization, fiber printing, and grease.

Fabrication and Characterization of PMMA/HMX-based Microcapsules via in situ Polymerization

Abstract:Microcapsule technology was applied with nitramine explosives to improve their performance. Polymethyl Methacrylate (PMMA) was selected for the fabrication of 1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazocane (HMX) based microcapsules. The PMMA/HMX-based microcapsules were prepared via a facile in situ polymerization of PMMA on the surface of the HMX crystals. Structural characterization of the PMMA/HMX microcapsules was studied systematically by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fouriertransform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, and their thermal durability as well as their mechanical sensitivities were measured. The results indicated that spherical microcapsules were formed, with PMMA as the capsule wall and HMX as the core material. The SEM results showed that the grains of the PMMA/HMX microcapsules were spherical and that the particle distribution was homogeneous. XRD and FT-IR analyses indicated that the HMX polymorph was preserved in the optimal β-form during the whole preparative process. The DSC results showed that the PMMA/HMX microcapsules had better thermal decomposition performance, and that the apparent activation energy of the microcapsules had increased by 47.3 kJ/mol compared to the recrystallized HMX, and its thermal stability had greatly improved. In addition, the drop height (H50) had increased from 30.45 cm to 58.49 cm, an increase of 65.81%. Thus, microcapsule technology will have a very wide range of applications in reducing the sensitivity of high energy materials in the future.

Abstract:Abstract To further improve the comprehensive performances of conventional nitramine energetic crystals hexahydro‐1,3,5‐trinitro‐1,3,5‐triazine (RDX), 1,3,5,7‐tetranitro‐1,3,5,7‐tetrazocane (HMX), and 2,4,6,8,10,12‐hexanitro‐2,4,6,8,10,12‐hexaazaisowurtzitane (CL‐20), especially their thermal stability and safety properties, is the main pursue in the field of energetic materials. Enlightened by means of the composition of attachment proteins from mussels, this research demonstrates that polydopamine (PDA) self‐polymerization could be used to prepare core‐shell structure energetic composites by surface coating technology. The results reveal that energetic crystal cores are mostly well‐coated by PDA more than 6 h; the combined characteristics of explosives and PDA indicating the main interface interaction force is hydrogen bonding. Moreover, the optimal polymorph of HMX (β) and CL‐20(ε) are maintained in the preparation process. Besides, another interesting phenomenon can be observed that the polycrystalline phase transition of endothermic and the decomposition temperature of exothermic peak for energetic crystals have been increased evidently, benefitting from the heat resisting of PDA layer. Moreover, thermal decomposition has been studied and calculated under different heating rates. Furthermore, the impact sensitivity of the PDA modified composites obtained is tested as well and decreased by 2–4 times compared with pristine energetic crystals. Therefore, this fabrication strategy in this study would provide a potential application of energetic@PDA in high‐strength and high‐energy propellants.

Synthesis and Characterization of Pressure Resistant Agent with Double‐Layer Core/Shell Hollow‐Structure for Emulsion Explosive

Abstract:A novel pressure resistant agent (PRA) for emulsion explosive was prepared by a high-speed shear mixer with cenospheres, Al-2(SO4)(3), NaHCO3 and hydrophobic nano-silica as the raw materials. The structural features of the PRAs were characterized using a scanning electron microscope, a laser particle size analyzer and an optical microscope, and the experimental results showed that the PRAs were ellipsoidal microspheres with an average particle size of 200 mu m and had double-layer core/shell hollow-structures. The inner hollow shell of the microsphere could serve as sensitizing bubble when it was undamaged whatever the status of outer shell, and once it was broken, the materials in the outer and inner shells would react with each other and generate new sensitizing bubbles in emulsion explosive. The brisance and underwater explosion experimental results showed that when the addition of PRAs was determined to be 2 mass %, the resistance to dynamic pressure of emulsion explosive sensitized by glass microsphere (GM) would be improved significantly without affecting its power. The lead column compression of GM-2 mass % PRAs sensitized emulsion explosive was 16.05 mm, which was close to that of GM sensitized emulsion explosive. When compressed by a RDX booster underwater at the distances of 25 and 75 cm, the dynamic pressure resistance ability of GM-2 mass % PRAs sensitized emulsion explosive would increase by 56.54 and 62.07 %, respectively, compared to that of GM sensitized emulsion explosive at the same compression distance. This novel PRA provided double protections for improving the pressure resistant properties of emulsion explosives, especially in the condition of dynamic pressure compression.
Versatile fabrication of nanocomposite microcapsules with controlled shell thickness and low permeability

Abstract:Novel ethyl phenylacetate (EPA)-loaded nanocomposite microcapsules with polyurea (PU) /poly (melamine formaldehyde) (PMF) shells were facilely and fabricated: by using silica nanoparticle-stabilized oil-in-water (o/w) emulsion template and subsequent interfacial reaction and in situ polymerization. SiO2 nanoparticles absorbed at the interface between oil and water to stabilize the o/w emulsions. The oil droplets containing EPA, isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) and tolylene 2,4-diisocyanate-terminated poly (propylene glycol) (PPG-TDI) were subsequently reacted with MF prepolymer (pre-MF) dissolved in water phases. The interfacial reaction between pre-MF and IPDI produced interior PU walls. Meanwhile, the in situ polymerization of pre-MF generated exterior PMF walls. It was found that these in/out double walls were compact together. The resulting capsules had spherical shapes and rough exterior surfaces, and could be easily isolated, dried, and redispersed in epoxy resins. The size of the produced microcapsules was dependent on the concentration of SiO2 nanoparticles. The dynamic thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) demonstrated that the capsules showed excellent thermal stability with little weight loss when exposed at 150 °C for 2 h. Interestingly, with a double PU/PMF shell, these capsules exhibited an extra-low permeability. Moreover, these microcapsules can also demonstrate exceelent magnetic responsiveness after introducing magnetic nanoparticles inside. We believe our microcapsules could be potential candidates in microcapsule engineering, self-healing composites, and drug-carrying systems.
Study of Explosion Characteristics of Emulsion Explosive Sensitized by New Sensitizer

Abstract:Through underwater explosion experiment and explosion cutting experiment,energy output characteristic of emulsion explosive sensitized by new sensitizer was studied.Results show that compared with emulsion explosive sensitized by glass microspheres,the emulsion explosive sensitized by CMLS has a great improvement on explosive power.Dynamic sensitizing technology was adopted in CMLS type emulsion explosive preparation,so during detonation process,CMLS is decomposed and produces gas due to pressure,then small bubbles are distributed uniformly in the emulsion matrix,at last the emulsion matrix is sensitized.New sensitizer ensures charge with a high initial density,and can avoid half explosion and misfire due to the damaged of sensitization bubbles.The materials produced by CMLS decomposition are energetic groups which participate in detonation reaction,so the total energy output increases over 30%.It is expected that this new emulsion explosive will be further developed and applied extensively in practice.
Production and Application of Hollow Capsules Templated on Melamine-formaldehyde Microspheres

Abstract:Uniform hollow capsules were produced by the layer-by-layer electrostatic self-assembly technique. The core-shell microspheres were prepared by alternately depositing negative and positive polyelectrolytes onto the weakly-crosslinked MF microspheres which were used as solid templates, then the templates were decomposed by 0.1 mol/L hydrochloric acid to get hollow capsules. The loaded drug amount and controlled release from the capsules were tested using Dexorubicin hydrochloride as the model medicine. The result shows that the loaded drug amount in the capsules is 27.07 μg/mg and capsules can slow down the release of Dexorubicin remarkably.

Abstract:Abstract Thermo-responsive multicompartment microcapsules for co-encapsulation and controlled release of different lipophilic components are developed from multicomponent-double-emulsion templates by microfluidics. Each of the microcapsule comprises a thermo-responsive poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) shell and different oil cores. The different oil cores can be used as separate compartments for co-encapsulation of distinct lipophilic components. The precise manipulation of different oil cores afforded by our microfluidic device enables the fabrication of microcapsules with select number of each core, for optimizing the encapsulation of different lipophilic components. Because of the shell shrinking during heating process due to the thermo-responsive PNIPAM network, different lipophilic components co-encapsulated in the microcapsule can be simultaneously released via an external thermal trigger. The thermo-responsive multicompartment microcapsule provides an efficient system for co-encapsulation and controlled release of multiple lipophilic components. The microfluidic preparation approach presented here shows exciting potential in the design and fabrication of functional multicompartment microcapsules for co-encapsulation techniques.

Synthesis of functional microcapsules containing suspensions responsive to electric fields

Abstract:A sort of functional microcapsules, which contain a suspension responsive to electric fields, is prepared by in situ polymerization of urea and formaldehyde. The suspension is made up of pigment phthalocyanine green (PPG) and tetrachloroethylene. In order to solve the particles' separation from the suspension during the microencapsulation and to obtain microcapsules applying to electronic ink display, the dispersibility of the particles, the contact angles between the particles and the tetrachloroethylene, and the influences of different emulsifiers on the microencapsulation are investigated. It is found that the dispersion extent and lipophilicity of the PPG particles are improved due to their surface modification with octadecylamine. The contact angles between the modified PPG particles and the tetrachloroethylene increase, and the PPG particles modified with 2 wt% octadecylamine have the best affinity for tetrachloroethylene. The interfacial tension between C(2)Cl(4) and H(2)O with urea-formaldehyde prepolymer descends from 43 to 35 mN/m, which indicates that the polymer has certain surface activity. However, water-soluble emulsifiers have an important influence during the microencapsulation because they can absorb on the surfaces of internal phase and prevent the resin of urea-formaldehyde from depositing there. From the SEM images of shell surface and cross section, the microcapsules have relatively smooth surfaces and the average thickness is about 4.5 mum. When the microcapsules are prepared with agitation rates of 1000 and 600 rpm, the mean diameters of the obtained microcapsules are 11 and 155 mum, respectively. The particles in the capsules move toward positive electrode with a responsive time of several hundred milliseconds while providing an electric field.

Through the coordinated self-assembly of polymethyl methacrylate-polyvinyl acetate (PMMA-PVA) with honeycomb-like structure and nanoparticles, a controlled and orderly distribution of nitroamine explosive (cyclotetramethylenetetranitramine, HMX; cyclotrimethylenetrinitramine, RDX; and hexanitrohexaazaisowurtzitane, CL-20) structure was achieved, above all, resolving the agglomeration problem availably. The modification ability of PMMA to RDX, HMX, and CL-20 at different temperatures was simulated by Materials Studio, which provided guidance for the ambient temperature of collaborative self-assembly. In order to compare the priority of the morphology and performance, RDX/PMMA-PVA, HMX/PMMA-PVA, and CL-20/PMMA-PVA composite particles with the same PMMA content were also fabricated by water suspension coating method, respectively. Structural characterizations and thermal stability of the composites were systematically studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectra, and differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). Moreover, the safety performance was analyzed by qualitative testing of impact sensitivity and friction sensitivity. The solid spherical PBX prepared via collaborative self-assembly all exhibited a perfect spherical structure, smooth, and flat coating, without any agglomeration. They had the same crystalline structure as the uncoated explosives, simultaneously demonstrating lower impact sensitivity and higher energy performance. The application of collaborative self-assembly technology has broken through the key technical bottleneck of the shell material being easy to form a separate phase in the desensitization coating of explosives, availably resolved the problems of particle exposure and low coverage during the coating, thus possessing vital significance for reference in the design and fabrication of PBXs with core-shell structure.
