Abstract:This paper presents a field-circuit coupled design and analysis method for the permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) system used in electric vehicles. The time-stepping finite-element method is used to simulate the motor system, which integrates the electromagnetic field analysis of the motor prototype and the control algorithm of the drive system. A two-dimensional transient electromagnetic field model is built for a 15-kW PMSM in ANSYS Maxwell, and a double closed-loop vector control circuit model is set up in ANSYS Simplorer. The coupled simulation system is then obtained by integrating the two models. Transient simulation is conducted through field-circuit coupled analysis. The simulation results and the experimental results show a good consistency. The research of this paper provides a powerful tool for the PMSM system design.

Abstract:This paper proposes a high-precision mathematical modeling scheme for interior permanent magnet synchronous motors (IPMSMs), which gives full consideration to the saturation and cross-coupling influence based on the finite element analysis (FEA). Firstly, the IPMSM model is built in ANSYS/Maxwell to acquire the variable stator inductance and flux linkage parameters under various kinds of working conditions. Secondly, the obtained d-axis inductance, q-axis inductance, and rotor flux linkage are further calculated, processed, and pre-stored in three two-dimensional (2-D) look- up-tables (LUTs). Thirdly, the IPMSM model is built in MATLAB/Simulink based on three established tables. Finally, by looking up the three tables according to the real-time d-axis and q-axis currents, the IPMSM system can be simulated under different working conditions for various control methods. With the developed high-precision FEA-based mathematical modeling scheme, the simulation results will be more accurate and the simulation process will be more efficient with significant time savings and better dynamic performance. To validate the effectiveness of the proposed modeling scheme, a Space Vector Pulse Width Modulation (SVPWM) control system with maximum torque per ampere (MTPA) and flux-weakening (FW) control as well as feed-forward decoupling control is built based on a 15kW IPMSM prototype.

Abstract:The modeling process of multiphase PMSM variable speed system was expressed in detail based on analyzing the characters of system.Furthermore,the two closed loops control modulation system for the six phase PMSM based on field oriented control were established.Some engineering problems for multiphase PMSM variable speed system also have been discussed,and the circuit of sampling,protection,and fault disposal were designed,moreover,the software of interrupt handling and fault diagnosis were designed.Finally,the simulation result proved the veracity and feasibility of modeling and algorithm above.The hardware circuit was also designed.

Abstract:This paper proposed a nonlinear analytical model-embedded optimal design procedure for permanent-magnet synchronous motors with an external rotor. Combined with the winding inductance calculation, a refined magnetic circuit is proposed for the analytical prediction of the electromagnetic performance. The stator nonlinearity, which is significant in torque prediction, is considered by using the conception of saturation current. Then, ant colony algorithm is employed for the multi-objective optimization for the great potential in global exploring. Finally, optimal design parameters are selected from the Pareto front. The effectiveness of the proposed optimization design method is verified by finite-element analysis and experimental results of the manufactured prototype.

Abstract:This article analyzed and compared the complex permeance model (CPM) and nonlinear analytical model (NAM) for surface-mounted permanent magnet (SPM) motor using a voltage source inverter (VSI). For linear CPM, the slotting effect is represented using the improved complex permeance function that describes the real slot shape rather than infinitely deep slot. NAM is extended from CPM and it replaces the magnetic potential drop of stator iron by the equivalent virtual current in the slot-opening and tooth-tip to account for the nonlinearity effect. The nonlinear inductance of SPM motor including the main phase inductance, slot leakage inductance, tooth-tip leakage inductance, and end winding leakage inductance is calculated using the frozen permeability method, which is the key to solve the electric circuit with VSI. The instantaneous back electromotive force (EMF) is calculated from the nonlinear back EMF coefficient and the back EMF neglecting iron nonlinearity. The electromagnetic torque obtained from motor model is used in the mechanical model and then the rotational speed and rotor position are obtained for the electric circuit model. Hence, the iterative solving process for the motor system is established to calculate the transient performance of SPM motor using VSI. Compared with CPM, NAM can greatly improve the calculation accuracy, which is also validated by both finite-element model and experiment. Besides, the proposed NAM is computationally efficient, which is useful for both motor design and motor control.

Abstract:High-speed permanent magnet motor is widely used for its excellent performance. With the development of technology, the motor needs be designed to meet more features, such as low torque ripples, low noise, low loss, and so on. This paper focuses on the design of a 500W, 120000rpm high-speed permanent magnet motor, and the torque ripples effected by two pole-slot combinations are analyzed by both the theoretical solution and the finite element analysis with Fourier transformation. It is clarified that because of the different pole pairs and different magnetizations, the electromagnetic torque of 4p6s is smaller than that of 2p3s, while the ripple torque of 4p6s is larger than that of 2p3s. In addition, as the width of the slot opening increasing, the torque ripples of 4p6s are always greater than that of 2p3s.

Abstract:Permanent magnet (PM) synchronous motor has the magnet devices with variable shapes and location, so the electromagnetic field in PM synchronous motor is more complex. Finite element method (FEM) provides an accurate means of determining the electromagnetic field distribution, with due account magnetic saturation characteristics. With the ANSYS, the distribution of electromagnetic field in PM synchronous motor was analyzed and calculated. Through a prototype machine, no-load and load electromagnetic field in PM synchronous motor were obtained. When the PM synchronous motor was loaded, direct axis (d-axis) and quadrature axis (q-axis) armature reaction magnetic field were obtained. By back-dealing model of ANSYS, the pictures of magnetic flux density (B) and magnetic vector potential (A) were gained. Then back EMF of PM synchronous motor was figured out with two different means, and the calculation results were compared and analyzed, which are helpful for the design and performance analysis of PM synchronous motor.

Abstract:In this paper, the modeling of a permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM) is described based on multi-field coupling theory and machine behavior in aspects of electromagnetic, thermal, and mechanical characteristics are predicted. An accurate PMSM temperature field calculation method based on 3-D multi-physical field coupling FEM is proposed. The loss density and fluid velocity of each subdivision unit are obtained through solving the 3-D electromagnetic and fluid fields, which are then loaded into the thermal field analysis, and the temperature distribution is generated. A 600kW, 4200r/min PMSM with 30m(3)/min ventilation PMSM prototype was established. The temperature results of experiment and calculation are in good agreement, verifying the effectiveness of the analyzing method proposed in this paper. The vibration and acoustic analysis is also carried out on the high speed motor to calculate the vibration of stator shell and corresponding noise distribution. Furthermore, a synthesis of train traction power calculation model and temperature analysis method was presented. The temperature rise of PMSM can thus be predicted under real operation conditions.

Abstract:In this paper, the magnetic circuit of DC solenoid electromagnet with frustum magnet core and ar- mature was analyzed,and the method of magnetic circuit calculation( including the calculations of the magnetic re- sistance ,of the magnetic flux and of the attraction,etc.)was described.Based on the powerful numerical value computation capability and the plentiful function libraries of Mulat,the calculation of the static attraction charac- teristic of DC solenoid electromagnet was implemented and its characteristic curve was plotted by programming in Matlab, and the program flow chart was given.The calculation examples of the attraction characteristies for three different type electromagnets were given.

Abstract:The characteristics of a permanent-magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) are influenced greatly by the back-electromotive force waveforms in the motor, which are directly related to the magnet shape. We assume that the outer surface of a magnet in a PMSM can be modeled as one part of a cylinder. Using an ANSOFT model, we optimized the radius of the magnet with respect to number of poles, rotor size, and magnet thickness when the total harmonic distortion is below 1%. We then set up a lookup table using the optimization results so that the desired outer radius of a magnet of any new PMSM motor could be derived, subject to the parameter limits. We applied this method to some PMSM prototypes, and confirmed that the calculation results are substantially accurate.

Abstract:Purpose This paper aims to present an interactive design and simulation tool for permanent magnet synchronous machines based on the finite-element-method. The tool is intended for education and research on electrical machines. Design/methodology/approach A coupling between the software MATLAB and finite element method magnetics is used. Several functionalities are included as modular scripts and represented in the form of a graphical user interface. Included are fully parametrized motor models, automatic winding generations and the evaluation of torque waveforms, core losses and speed-torque-diagrams. A survey was conducted to determine how the motivation of students concerning the covered topics is influenced by using the tool. Findings Due to its simplicity and the intuitive visualization of the results, the tool provides direct access to the topic of electrical machines without having to deal with separate scripts. The modular structure of the software allows simple extensions with new functions. Because students can directly contribute to the tool with their own work, their motivation for using and extending it increases. Originality/value The presented tool offers more functionalities compared to similar free software packages, e.g. the calculation of core losses and speed-torque diagrams. Also, it is designed in such a way that it can be easily understood and extended by students.

Abstract:A permanent magnet spherical motor (PMSpM) is a typical multiple-degree-of-freedom apparatus. This paper proposes a torque map-based torque model and its counterpart using a genetic algorithm for the PMSpM with non-circumferential symmetric permanent magnets. The basic structure and operating principle of the PMSpM under study are presented. The analytic model of the 3D magnetic field is researched using the spherical harmonic method. The magnetic field model is verified via finite element method (FEM) analysis and an experiment of radial magnetic flux density. The analytic torque model is formulated using the Lorentz force method. The torque maps are established according to the principle, and the torque map-based torque model originates from the maps. FEM and the experimental results prove the correctness of the torque map-based torque model, and real-time performance of the torque model is also estimated. To solve the coil current calculation difficulty, the genetic algorithm is introduced for establishing the reversal torque model; MATLAB simulation is conducted for the convergence speed of the reversal torque model; and the real-time performance is studied on Qt 5.14/C++ upper software.

Abstract:This paper deals with a way of computation of the mechanical behavior of permanent magnet synchronous couplings. This method is based on the calculation of the forces between the magnets of the device. The formulation of these forces is based on magnetic pole theory. The computation is done using a semi‐numerical integration method. This method has been validated in test cases and appears to be very advantageous in terms of calculation time and precision. So this solution appears to be a good way to study and design this kind of device.

Abstract:This paper proposed an efficient high-accuracy multidisciplinary design process for the integrated system of low speed permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM). The method combined the analytical models and numerical models together to get an efficient way to design the integrated motor. In the proposed method, a magnetic equivalent circuit (MEC) model of the motor is established first based on one modular structure of the motor, and the finite element analysis (FEA) numerical model is used to correct the results of the analytical model next. Then the iron loss, copper loss, and switching loss from the results of the electromagnetic model are loaded to a proposed simplified lumped parameter fluid-thermal model. This fluid-thermal coupled analytical model cuts the fluid flow into several parts depends on the parameters of the cooling path, each parts act as a current controlled voltage source coupled with these parameters. And because this coupled model has controlled sources, the conventional node voltage method is not suitable anymore, so a more universal list parameter calculation method is proposed for this coupled model. Finally, the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model is used to correct the results of the analytical model as well. The aim of the above analytical models is to quickly get the suitable multidisciplinary pre-design or design trends, and this pre-work or trends will reduce the design process time of the high-accuracy numerical models.

Abstract:The taper permanent magnet motor was analyzed and the effectiveness of two methods on handling of problems concerned with non-uniform distribution of magnetic field along axial direction in electric motor was studied,which were sectional calculation method and 3D finite element method. The analyzed results were verified by no-load EMF experiment of the electric motor. Then the variation of direct axis and quadrature axis inductances was obtained by 3D finite element method for the taper permanent magnet motor with the taper rotor at different axial locations. And the inductances of a prototype were measured at different test frequency and with taper rotor at different axial locations. The experimental results which agreed well with calculated results by 3D finite element method verified the validity of the analyses.

Abstract:Thermal analysis calculation is an indispensable checking process in the design of the high-speed permanent magnet synchronous machine (HSPMSM) with the active magnetic bearings, due to its high loss density and non-contact support mode. The finite element method (FEM) is applied for visual global temperature distribution. Because the thermal analysis is a complex problem reflected the interaction among the electromagnetic field, temperature field, and fluid field, so it cannot be solved independently, and a multi-physical field simulation based on magneto-thermal-fluid coupled iterative solution is proposed. An electromagnetism (EM) model is established to solve electromagnetic loss and the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software is used to simulate convective condition, both the results are applied to the thermal analysis of motor. The data interaction is bidirectional and transfers in the form of a field, and the interaction during the EM model, the CFD model, and thermal analysis is fully considered to guarantee high accuracy. Finally, two prototypes of 30-kW 60000 r/min magnetically suspended HSPMSMs have been developed. The experimental results of back-to-back towing test validate the accuracy of the proposed multi-physical field simulation.
