Abstract:The problem of routing and wavelength assignment (RWA) in WDM (wavelength division multiplexing) networks is addressed in this paper. Most of the attention has been devoted to RWA algorithm. In this article, some concepts on RWA are studied first. Then we studied the associated research problems and challenges on RWA. Various RWA approaches are examined and compared. Finally, we proposed a new RWA algorithm based on multi-objective. In this new algorithm, we consider multiple network optimizing objectives to setup a lightpath with maximize profit and shortest path under the limited resources. By comparing and analyzing, the proposed algorithm is much better than the algorithms, which only consider one optimizing objective. This new RWA algorithm may be useful to a network maker.

Abstract:Wavelength assignment is one of the main algorithmic problems arising from WDM all optical networks, which is important in the theory and the practice. The wavelength assignment problem on optical rings with fixed wavelength converters is considered. First, two preprocess algorithms are designed to decompose a communication request set into some continuous cyclic sequences. Then the permutation group is used to represent the ring network with fixed converters and an algorithm is proposed to classify the wavelength channels into some groups. Based on these ideas, a wavelength assignment algorithm is presented. For an optical ring with any fixed conversion mode, the algorithm can give a good assignment scheme.

Abstract:This paper studies multihop optical networks in which nodes employ wavelength routing switches that enable the establishment of wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) channels, called lightpaths, between node pairs. In fact, most optical networks are multifiber networks. The problem of dynamical routing and assignment of wavelength (RAW) in such networks is studied in this paper. Two resource assignment strategies, PACK and SPREAD, are proposed. By virtue of a layered-graph, routing and assignment of wavelength subproblems can be considered simultaneously. These two strategies can be used to solve the RAW problem in networks with even links as well as that in networks with uneven links. Simulation shows that layered-graph-based RAW algorithms perform better than the existing ones. It also shows that SPREAD with distributive use of network resources can achieve better performance than PACK with collective use of resources in multifiber networks. The layered-graph-based algorithms can effectively deal with the failure of the fiber/link and node. By making use of the special structure of the layered-graph, we propose a shortest path algorithm, whose complexity is lower than that of the standard shortest path algorithm.

Abstract:An alternate routing algorithm is proposed for the problem of routing and assignment of wavelength in Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) optical transport network. It can more accurately model the state of the whole network after the establishment of new calls than other alternate algorithms proposed before. The route-wavelength pair which has the least influence on the state of the whole network is chosen to accommodate the coming call. The algorithm performs better than other alternate routing algorithms in most cases we studied. Fairness is improved significantly too.

Abstract:In this paper, routing and wavelength assignment (RWA) algorithms whose optimum object is the minimum number of wavelength required in wavelength division multiplexing all optical network were studied. Since the number of wavelength required (NWR) obtained by the existing two RWA algorithms is associated with the numbering order of the nodes in the network, a statistics method was proposed to modify the RWA algorithms. With this statistics method, a smaller NWR can be acquired. And, it is the first time that the statistics method was proposed to compare the performance of different RWA algorithms. Two RWA algorithms can be compared by contrasting the distribution of the NWRs obtained by each RWA algorithms.

Abstract:All-optical wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) networks using wavelength routing technology are considered to be a potential and practical solution to the next generation of wide area backbone networks. The ever-increasing demand for bandwidth farther enhances the application of WDM optical networking technology. The main problem involved in design and optimization of wavelength-routed optical network is lightpath routing and wavelength assignment, namely, R&WA. In previous work on the R&WA problem, the project function has been analyzed by mathematic tools, such as integrate linear programming (ILP), heuristic algorithms or probability model, under the assumption of an ideal physical layer over which transmission impairments are ignored. In practical application, however, such impairments and their influence over traffic performance should be considered seriously, and the lightpath selection should be adjusted accordingly.In this paper, we propose an integrated approach for lightpath routing, which considers both the limitations of network topology and resource and the restrictions resulted from transmission impairments through the path computed by our heuristic algorithm when performing lightpath routing. The selected paths resulted from our proposed R&WA algorithm will be evaluated in a coarse-to-fine mechanism. By analyzing the impact of the optical devices (OXC, EDFA etc.) deployed through the lightpath, an optimal path is finally determined.This paper is composed mainly in three parts. For the first part, as to a given network topology, we present the ligthpath routing result, which investigate the influence of different network parameters, based on the proposed heuristic algorithm combining graph theory. For the second part, we studied the impact of various transmission impairments over BER performance, including crosstalk and noise caused by the optical devices. For the third part we combine the results obtained from the former two parts, and evaluate the selected path in a coarse-to-fine mechanism to make an optimal selection. The problem of load balancing is also briefly discussed in our paper.

Abstract:This paper addresses the routing and wavelength assignment (RWA) problem in a wavelength routed all optical network. One of the main issues is the assignment of the limited number of wavelengths over each physical fiber connection so that high aggregate capacity can be achieved. In a typical mesh topology, this problem has been shown to be NP-hard. In this paper, we propose a new heuristic based algorithm building upon one of the best known wavelength assignment algorithms proposed by Zhang and Acampora [14]. The salient feature of the proposed algorithm is to consider the inherent multihop nature of the underlying mesh topology. We demonstrate that the proposed algorithm reduces the complexity by an order of magnitude, while at the same time achieving significantly lower blocking probability.

Abstract:The use of multi-granularity OXC in DWDM network results in reduction of the number of ports both for the switches and for the optical multiplexers and de-multiplexers, which lead to cost saving. However, it introduces more difficulties for the routing and wavelength assignment problem. In this paper, a new model, called Multi-Dimension-Graph, is proposed to provide an exact description of the states of multi-granularity WDM network. The algorithm based on the MDS-G can solve routing and wavelength assignment subproblems in multi-granularity networks simultaneously. The simulation results prove that the algorithm based on the MDS-G performs better than existing algorithms that deal with routing and wavelength assignment separately.

Abstract:This paper addresses the problem of wavelength assignment and wavelength routing in a wide-area optical network, where Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) technology has emerged as the transmission and switching choice. One of the major design issues in this network is the assignment of the limited number of wavelengths among network stations so that higher aggregate capacity can be achieved. The problem of wavelength assignment and routing is proved to be NP-hard problem. The present literature on this topic is a large repertoire of heuristics that produce good solutions in a reasonable amount of time. These heuristic, however, have restricted applicability in a practical environment because they have a number of fundamental problems including high time complexity, lack of scalability with respect to optimal solutions. In this paper, we propose genetic based algorithm with an objective to simultaneously meet the goals of bight performance and fast running time. In addition, we propose to apply the Greedy Random Adaptive Search Procedure (GRASP) to solve the wavelength assignment problem. We demonstrate that our proposed algorithms can achieve lower blocking probability while taking considerably less running time when compared to one of the best known heuristic wavelength assignment algorithms proposed by Zhang and Acampora [17], in which close to optimal solution can be obtained.

Abstract:In this article, an efficient heuristic approach for routing and wavelength-selective(RWS) in wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) optical networks is proposed. The high bandwidth of fiber-optic links is utilized through the WDM technology which supports the propagation of multiple laser beams through a single fiber-optic link provided that each laser beam uses a distinct optical wavelength. Thus, optical communication introduces a new routing environment with new characteristics different from traditional one. Wavelength converters are used to effectively alleviate the blocking probability and help to resolve contention at the output port of switches by shifting one incoming wavelength to another outgoing wavelength at an OXC node. With the help of wavelength converters, the WDM optical network will utilize the wavelength resources efficiently.

In this paper, within a WDM grooming mesh network, under the constraints of the number of transceivers of nodes and wavelength continuity, the adaptive routing and wavelength assignment (RWA) problem is investigated, and some adaptive traffic grooming algorithms are proposed. Abstract:Considers routing connections in a reconfigurable optical network using WDM. Each connection between a pair of nodes in the network is assigned a path through the network and a wavelength on that path, such that connections whose paths share a common link in the network are assigned different wavelengths. The authors derive an upper bound on the carried traffic of connections (or equivalently, a lower bound on the blocking probability) for any routing and wavelength assignment (RWA) algorithm in such a network. The bound scales with the number of wavelengths and is achieved asymptotically (when a large number of wavelengths is available) by a fixed RWA algorithm. The bound can be used as a metric against which the performance of different RWA algorithms can be compared for networks of moderate size. The authors illustrate this by comparing the performance of a simple shortest-path RWA (SP-RWA) algorithm via simulation relative to the bound. They also derive a similar bound for optical networks using dynamic wavelength converters, which are equivalent to circuit-switched telephone networks, and compare the two cases. Finally, they quantify the amount of wavelength reuse achievable in large networks using the SP-RWA via simulation as a function of the number of wavelengths, number of edges, and number of nodes for randomly constructed networks as well as de Bruijn networks. They also quantify the difference in wavelength reuse between two different optical node architectures.<>

Abstract:For the purpose of reducing the complexity and cost of optical large-scale cross-connect, wavelengths are grouped into wavebands or fiber to be switched as a single entity, which is called multi- granularity switching. However, it introduces more complexity into the routing and wavelength assignment problem. In this paper, we propose a novel graph model for describing the states of the multi-granularity switching WDM networks. Based on the model, the dynamic routing and wavelength assignment problems for multi-granularity traffic can be solved jointly, and different on-line wavelength grooming policies can be achieved simultaneously. By simulation, we compared the performance of our algorithms under different policy and different percent of fibers for fiber switching. The result proved that our algorithms yield better performance than those deal with the routing and wavelength assignment separately.

Abstract:An integrated approach which combines traditional routing and wavelength assignment problem with physical transmission impairments is proposed for the optimal design of wavelength-routed optical networks. A heuristic algorithm is developed to evaluate the approach in a coarse-to-fine manner, and the load balancing problem is also studied. Numerical results show that the proposed approach can guarantee transmission performance, meanwhile the wavelength requirement is close to the optimal result, and the traffic load tends to be evenly distributed with more alternate paths.

Abstract:We propose a new lightpath routing algorithm for WDM optical networks that solves the routing and wavelength assignment (commonly known as RWA) problem dynamically and separately. The RWA problem is partitioned into two subproblems, the routing and wavelength assignment problems, and both of them are solved using the shortest path routing technique. For solving the routing subproblem, an auxiliary graph is created whereby the nodes and links in the original network are transformed to the edges and vertices, respectively, and the availability of each wavelength on the input and output links of a node as well as the number of available wavelength converters are taken into account in determining the weights of edges. Furthermore, for solving the wavelength assignment subproblem, an auxiliary graph is also utilized and the cost for wavelength conversion is taken into consideration in the edge weight function. Simulation results show that our algorithm performs much better than previously proposed algorithms in terms of blocking probability, especially if the number of wavelengths is large while the number of converters at each node is limited.

Abstract:The explosion of Internet traffic calls for quality of service (QoS)-guaranteed packet transmission in wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) networks with high energy and bandwidth efficiency. Conventional routing and wavelength assignment (RWA) algorithms focus on circuit switching, which does not well meet this requirement due to the bursty nature of IP traffic. Based on a novel traffic matrix decomposition technique, we study the joint design of traffic scheduling and routing in a reconfigurable WDM optical network to improve energy and bandwidth efficiency. Specifically, every node in the network is equipped with a set of parallel tunable lasers, each with a reconfiguration overhead. A dynamic matrix is adopted to model the traffic among the nodes and is decomposed into a set of transmission configurations (i.e., traffic scheduling). The configurations are then fulfilled by tuning the parallel lasers and routing the scheduled traffic under the topology constraint, to achieve loss-free packet transmissions with bounded delay (i.e., QoS guarantee). We reveal that a tradeoff exists between the packet delay and the required number of tunable lasers. The latter is then minimized under a given packet delay to save energy. As far as we know, this is the first work to adopt traffic matrix decomposition in WDM networks to save energy. The proposed framework is validated by extensive simulation studies.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose an ant-based algorithm for dynamic routing and wavelength assignment (RWA) in WDM optical networks under the wavelength continuity constraint. By adopting a new routing table structure and keeping a number of ants in the network to cooperatively explore the network states and continuously update the routing tables, our new ant algorithm can efficiently support the ants' foraging tasks of route selection and wavelength assignment in WDM networks, and allow a connection to be setup promptly on arrival with a small setup time. Extensive simulation results based on the ns-2 network simulator indicate that the proposed algorithm can adapt well to traffic variations and achieves a lower blocking probability than the fixed routing algorithm.
