Abstract:Comprehensions are a good query notation for database programming languages (DBPLs), which subsume query languages such as SQL and OQL in expressiveness. The AutoMed IQL is an intermediate query language based on comprehensions, which can be used to define the semantic relationships between schemas constructs. In this paper, we emphasize the query optimization problem for IQL queries. Since IQL can be smoothly integrated into several DBPLs, our approach is expected to be applied to semantic web environments.

Abstract:For a general infinite system of convex inequalities in a Banach space, we study the basic constraint qualification and its relationship with other fundamental concepts, including various versions of conditions of Slater type, the Mangasarian--Fromovitz constraint qualification, as well as the Pshenichnyi--Levin--Valadier property introduced by Li, Nahak, and Singer. Applications are given in the restricted range approximation problem, constrained optimization problems, as well as in the approximation problem with constraints by conditionally positive semidefinite functions.

Abstract:Query containment and query answering are two important computational tasks in databases. While query answering amounts to compute the result of a query over a database, query containment is the problem of checking whether for every database, the result of one query is a subset of the result of another query. In this paper, we deal with unions of conjunctive queries, and we address query containment and query answering under Description Logic constraints. Every such constraint is essentially an inclusion dependencies between concepts and relations, and their expressive power is due to the possibility of using complex expressions, e.g., intersection and difference of relations, special forms of quantification, regular expressions over binary relations, in the specification of the dependencies. These types of constraints capture a great variety of data models, including the relational, the entity-relationship, and the object-oriented model, all extended with various forms of constraints, and also the basic features of the ontology languages used in the context of the Semantic Web. We present the following results on both query containment and query answering. We provide a method for query containment under Description Logic constraints, thus showing that the problem is decidable, and analyze its computational complexity. We prove that query containment is undecidable in the case where we allow inequalities in the right-hand side query, even for very simple constraints and queries. We show that query answering under Description Logic constraints can be reduced to query containment, and illustrate how such a reduction provides upper bound results with respect to both combined and data complexity.

Abstract:This paper investigates the problem of confidentiality violations via illegal data inferences that occur when arithmetic constraints are combined with non-confidential numeric data to infer confidential information. The database is represented as a point in an ( n + k )-dimensional constraint space, where n is the number of numerical data items stored in the database (extensional database) and k is the number of derivable attributes (intensional database). Database constraints over both extensional and intensional databases form an ( n+ k )-dimensional constraint object. A query answer over a data item x is an interval I of values along the x axis of the database such that I is correct (i.e., the actual data value is within I ) and safe (i.e., users cannot infer which point within I is the actual data value). The security requirements are expressed by the accuracy with which users are allowed to disclose data items. More specifically, we develop two classification methods: (1) volume-based classification, where the entire volume of the disclosed constraint object that contains the data item is considered and (2) interval based classification, where the length of the interval that contains the data item is considered. We develop correct and safe inference algorithms for both cases.

Abstract:For an inequality system defined by an infinite family of proper convex functions, we introduce some new notions of constraint qualifications in terms of the epigraphs of the conjugates of these functions and study relationships between these new constraint qualifications and other well-known constraint qualifications including the basic constraint qualification studied by Hiriart-Urrutty and Lemarechal and by Li, Nahak, and Singer. Extensions of known results to more general settings are presented, and applications to particular important problems, such as conic programming and approximation theory, are also studied.

Abstract:The by-now-standard perspective on databases within the deductive database community is that they can be specified by sets of first-order sentences. As such, they can be said to be claims about the truths of some external world; the database is a representation of that world.Within the logical database paradigm, virtually all approaches to database query evaluation treat queries as first-order formulas, usually with free variables whose bindings resulting from the evaluation phase define the answers to the query. Following Levesque [10, 11], we argue that, for greater expressiveness, queries should be formulas in an epistemic modal logic. Queries, in other words, should be permitted to address aspects of the external world as represented by the database, as well as aspects of the database itself, i.e., aspects of what the database knows about that external world. We shall also argue that integrity constraints are best viewed as sentences about what the database knows, not, as is usually the case, as first-order sentences about the external world. On this view, integrity constraints are modal sentences and hence are formally identical to a strict subset of the permissible database queries. Integrity maintenance then becomes formally identical to query evaluation for a certain class of database queries.We formalize these notions in Levesque's language KFOPCE and define the concepts of an answer to a query and of a database satisfying its integrity constraints. We also show that Levesque's axiomatization of KFOPCE provides a suitable logic for reasoning about queries and integrity constraints. Next, we show how to do query evaluation and integrity maintenance for a restricted, but sizable, class of queries/constraints. An interesting feature of this class of queries/constraints is that Prolog's negation as failure mechanism serves to reduce query evaluation to first-order theorem proving. This provides independent confirmation that negation as failure is really an epistemic operator in disguise. We then provide sufficient conditions for the completeness of this query evaluator. Finally, we show how to use this evaluator to answer queries under the closed-world assumption.

Abstract:Several fundamental concepts such as the basic constraint qualification (BCQ), the strong conical hull intersection property (CHIP), and the perturbations for convex systems of inequalities in Banach spaces (over R or C) are extended and studied; here the systems are not necessarily finite. Their relationships with each other in connection with the best approximations are investigated. As applications, we establish results on the unconstrained reformulation of best approximations with infinitely many constraints in Hilbert spaces; also we give several characterizations of best restricted range approximations in C(Q) under quite general constraints.
VeriEQL: Bounded Equivalence Verification for Complex SQL Queries with Integrity Constraints

Abstract:The task of SQL query equivalence checking is important in various real-world applications (including query rewriting and automated grading) that involve complex queries with integrity constraints; yet, state-of-the-art techniques are very limited in their capability of reasoning about complex features (e.g., those that involve sorting, case statement, rich integrity constraints, etc.) in real-life queries. To the best of our knowledge, we propose the first SMT-based approach and its implementation, VeriEQL, capable of proving and disproving bounded equivalence of complex SQL queries. VeriEQL is based on a new logical encoding that models query semantics over symbolic tuples using the theory of integers with uninterpreted functions. It is simple yet highly practical -- our comprehensive evaluation on over 20,000 benchmarks shows that VeriEQL outperforms all state-of-the-art techniques by more than one order of magnitude in terms of the number of benchmarks that can be proved or disproved. VeriEQL can also generate counterexamples that facilitate many downstream tasks (such as finding serious bugs in systems like MySQL and Apache Calcite).

A Logic Based Context Query Language

Abstract:Context is a basic ingredient in pervasive computing. It refers to user's both external environment and internal status, implying user's information needs during the interaction between the user and computer systems. By context-awareness, a variety of context information from heterogeneous sources is sensed, inferred, and exploited to facilitate information systems to better understand users' needs and deliver the right context-aware service to the right user at the right time and place. Fundamental to context-awareness is the context-aware computing infrastructure support. Among its components, context processing engine is the core of such an infrastructure, whose power is reflected from its context query language. In this paper, we first overview typical context query languages developed in the literature, and then present the design of our temporal description logic based context query language. We implement such a query language on our context-aware mobile services development platform. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first attempt on a temporal description logic based language for context querying in the literature. As the provided temporal relevant predicates can accommodate both time interval and time point semantics, such a language is flexible and powerful enough to represent and query complex context information in time-critical context-aware applications.

Abstract:This presentation outlines some aspects of interval analysis from the constraint interval point of view, focusing on some issues associated with mathematical analysis, especially those that are fundamental to fuzzy mathematical analysis. We begin by reviewing interval representations from the standard interval point of view and the study of intervals as functions of parameters varying in hypercubes, called constraint interval representation (CI). These concepts are used to define arithmetic operations between intervals, as well, interval-valued and interval functions for rational and transcedental functions. Issues of semantics as they apply to interval analysis and fuzzy interval analysis are discussed. The definition of constrained interval function extension is used to prove that each CI arithmetic operation is an isotonic inclusion.

Abstract:This paper presents a technique for the optimization of bound queries over disjunctive deductive databases with constraints. The proposed approach is an extension of the well-known Magic-Set technique and is well-suited for being integrated in current bottom-up (stable) model inference engines. More specifically, it is based on the exploitation of binding propagation techniques which reduce the size of the data relevant to answer the query and, consequently, reduces both the complexity of computing a single model and the number of models to be considered. The motivation of this work stems from the observation that traditional binding propagation optimization techniques for bottom-up model generator systems, simulating the goal driven evaluation of top-down engines, are only suitable for positive (disjunctive) queries, while hard problems are expressed using unstratified negation. The main contribution of the paper consists in the extension of a previous technique, defined for positive disjunctive queries, to queries containing both disjunctive heads and constraints (a simple and expressive form of unstratified negation). As the usual way of expressing declaratively hard problems is based on the guess-and-check technique, where the guess part is expressed by means of disjunctive rules and the check part is expressed by means of constraints, the technique proposed here is highly relevant for the optimization of queries expressing hard problems. The value of the technique has been proved by several experiments.

Inferring SQL Queries Using Program Synthesis

Abstract:Developing high-performance applications that interact with databases is a difficult task, as developers need to understand both the details of the language in which their applications are written in, and also the intricacies of the relational model. One popular solution to this problem is the use of object-relational mapping (ORM) libraries that provide transparent access to the database using the same language that the application is written in. Unfortunately, using such frameworks can easily lead to applications with poor performance because developers often end up implementing relational operations in application code, and doing so usually does not take advantage of the optimized implementations of relational operations, efficient query plans, or push down of predicates that database systems provide. In this paper we present QBS, an algorithm that automatically identifies fragments of application logic that can be pushed into SQL queries. The QBS algorithm works by automatically synthesizing invariants and postconditions for the original code fragment. The postconditions and invariants are expressed using a theory of ordered relations that allows us to reason precisely about the contents and order of the records produced even by complex code fragments that compute joins and aggregates. The theory is close in expressiveness to SQL, so the synthesized postconditions can be readily translated to SQL queries. Using 40 code fragments extracted from over 120k lines of open-source code written using the Java Hibernate ORM, we demonstrate that our approach can convert a variety of imperative constructs into relational specifications.

Abstract:The Object Constraint Language (OCL) is commonly used for specifying additional constraints on models, in addition, to the ones enforced by the semantics of the models. However, a lot of practitioners and even researchers are reluctant in using OCL to some extent due to the lack of sufficient familiarity with OCL. To facilitate practitioners and researchers in specifying OCL constraints, we designed and developed a web-based tool called interactive OCL (iOCL) for interactively specifying constraints on a given model. The core idea behind iOCL is to present and display only relevant details (e.g., operations) of OCL to users at a given step of constraint specification process, in addition to helping modelers with its syntax. We evaluated iOCL using a real-world case study from Cancer Registry of Norway and the results showed that iOCL can significantly reduce the time required to specify OCL constraints and decrease the possibility of making syntactic errors during the specification process. Thus, we conclude that iOCL can facilitate the process of OCL constraint specification. Interested users can try iOCL at: http://iocl.zen-tools.com/.

Abstract:The goal of this paper is to provide a strong integration between constraint modelling and relational DBMSs. To this end we propose extensions of standard query languages such as relational algebra and SQL, by adding constraint modelling capabilities to them. In particular, we propose non-deterministic extensions of both languages, which are specially suited for combinatorial problems. Non-determinism is introduced by means of a guessing operator, which declares a set of relations to have an arbitrary extension. This new operator results in languages with higher expressive power, able to express all problems in the complexity class NP. Some syntactical restrictions which make data complexity polynomial are shown. The effectiveness of both extensions is demonstrated by means of several examples. Abstract:As a very promising new data model, constraint database is attracting a growing interest recently. For better applications, we need to study its design theory. But to the best of our knowledge, no papers about the design of constraint databases could be found. So we hope to extend the well-developed design theory in relational databases to constraint databases. We introduce the notions such as variable independence, functional dependency, decomposition, lossless join and canonical form, etc. in the context of constraint databases. We present an algorithm to compute the canonical form of a dense-order constraint relation over a variable set, which preserve a variable independence of every generalized tuple and prove its correctness. Our main result is to prove that the existence of variable independence and functional dependency under some conditions, can decide whether a dense-order constraint relation scheme has a lossless-join decomposition. Our work provides basic theoretic results and an algorithm for the scheme design which is central in the design of dense-order constraint databases.
Disjunctive Policies for Database-Backed Programs

Abstract:When specifying security policies for databases, it is often natural to formulate disjunctive dependencies, where a piece of information may depend on at most one of two dependencies P1 or P2, but not both. A formal semantic model of such disjunctive dependencies, the Quantale of Information, was recently introduced by Hunt and Sands as a generalization of the Lattice of Information. In this paper, we seek to contribute to the understanding of disjunctive dependencies in database-backed programs and introduce a practical framework to statically enforce disjunctive security policies. To that end, we introduce the Determinacy Quantale, a new query-based structure which captures the ordering of disjunctive information in databases. This structure can be understood as a query-based counterpart to the Quantale of Information. Based on this structure, we design a sound enforcement mechanism to check disjunctive policies for database-backed programs. This mechanism is based on a type-based analysis for a simple imperative language with database queries, which is precise enough to accommodate a variety of row- and column-level database policies flexibly while keeping track of disjunctions due to control flow. We validate our mechanism by implementing it in a tool, DiVerT, and demonstrate its feasibility on a number of use cases.

Abstract:SHACL is a W3C-proposed schema language for expressing structural constraints on RDF graphs. Recent work on formalizing this language has revealed a striking relationship to description logics. SHACL expressions can use three fundamental features that are not so common in description logics. These features are equality tests; disjointness tests; and closure constraints. Moreover, SHACL is peculiar in allowing only a restricted form of expressions (so-called targets) on the left-hand side of inclusion constraints. The goal of this paper is to obtain a clear picture of the impact and expressiveness of these features and restrictions. We show that each of the four features is primitive: using the feature, one can express boolean queries that are not expressible without using the feature. We also show that the restriction that SHACL imposes on allowed targets is inessential, as long as closure constraints are not used. In addition, we show that enriching SHACL with "full" versions of equality tests, or disjointness tests, results in a strictly more powerful language.

Abstract:Causality has been recently introduced in databases, to model, characterize and possibly compute causes for query results (answers). Connections between queryanswer causality, consistency-based diagnosis, database repairs (wrt. integrity constraint violations), abductive diagnosis and the view-update problem have been established. In this work we further investigate connections between query-answer causality and abductive diagnosis and the view-update problem. In this context, we also define and investigate the notion of query-answer causality in the presence of integrity constraints.
