Abstract:Representation and reasoning with qualitative spatial relations is an important problem in artificial intelligence and has wide applications in the fields of geographic information system, computer vision, autonomous robot navigation, natural language understanding, spatial databases and so on. The reasons for this interest in using qualitative spatial relations include cognitive comprehensibility, efficiency and computational facility. This paper summarizes progress in qualitative spatial representation by describing key calculi representing different types of spatial relationships. The paper concludes with a discussion of current research and glimpse of future work.

Abstract:QSR(Qualitative Spatial Reasoning) has become an important research topic in both artificial intelligence(AI) and geographical information sciences.In AI,spatial relations are formally defined such that an inferable algebra can be established.However,modeling geospatial relations should consider some special properties of geographical space and geographical phenomena.They make representation and reasoning of spatial relations more accordant with the way that human beings manage and process spatial knowledge.This paper summarizes nine aspects of characteristics of geospatial relations.They include finititude and spherality of geographical space;semantics,complex actual shape,and areal distribution of features;cardinalities and hierarchies of spatial relations;and uncertain,3-dimensional,and temporal phenomena.The discussions on those nine aspects and two associated applications,geographical information retrieval and object based image analysis,provide directions for future research.

Abstract:Topological relations and direction relations between spatial regions are two important research topics in spatial reasoning.Most previous spatial reasoning researches focused on single aspect.Those were inadequate for real world applications.Formal presentation of cardinal direction is defined based on cardinal direction relation matrix model proposed by goyal and egenhofer.The representation and reasoning technology which integrating topology and cardinal direction is proposed,and interdependencies between them is considered.It deals with more than just one spatial aspect,and is valuable in the fields such as spatial database and robot navigation.

Abstract:Qualitative spatial reasoning is a very important subfield of artificial intelligence and intelligent computation. This paper focuses on qualitative spatial representation and reasoning in 3D space. We firstly describe qualitative 3D space by defining 3D spatial topological and directional relationships between objects. Then we explore spatial reasoning in 3D space by giving the composition tables of 3D spatial relationships. And we propose an uncertainty model to describe the confidence level of every relation, and construct a weighted constraint graph of all objects. In the course of inferring the locations of objects, a processing order of all objects is therefore built according to the weighted constraint graph.

Abstract:The directional relationship is one of the key theoretical issues in GIS. This paper focuses on the qualitative representation of the directional relationship and reasoning. First, the qualitative representation of the directional relationship based on the space with neutral zone is discussed. Then, the qualitative reasoning of the directional relationship based on the composition operation table of the directional relationship is presented. Finally, we conclude by mentioning some current and future research trends and summarizing our work.

Abstract:A comprehensive survey of qualitative representations in cognitive maps is provided in this paper from spatial cognition perspective. The necessity of qualitative representation for robot navigation and map building is discussed with emphasis on different forms of qualitative information represented in different cognitive maps. By discussing the main spatial representations, which are topological representation, direc- tional representation, distance representation, and ordering form of representation, advantages of qualitative representation are concluded as more tolerant to error, more understandable to human and less computation. An expectation is proposed that the combination of qualitative representation and quantitative information is much more practical in robot navigation and exploration.

Abstract:Qualitative spatial reasoning is an important analysis method for spatial information in GIS and other applications. Recently, the integration of two spatial relations in a model is a hot topic in qualitative spatial reasoning. The combinations of more than three relations and multi-types of objects are very useful for solving practical problems, but neither of them has been studied before. Firstly, the general framework for multi-relations and multi-domains model is defined, so does the algorithms for solving the constraints satisfaction problem. Then a concrete model (PLRTSD) with three domains (Point, Line and Region) and three spatial relations (Topology, Size and Diameter) is studied. Finally, the PLRTSD model is applied to complex spatial queries. Powerful spatial queries can be built upon PLRTSD and the query execution time can be greatly reduced by our algorithms.

Abstract:Qualitative spatial reasoning is a key spotlight in the domains of artificial intelligence, geographic information system, and robotics and so on. In this paper, we proposed a hierarchical qualitative spatial reasoning method for the spatial relations among multiple components in complex region. Firstly, an adjacency hierarchy matrix is defined based on adjacency link graph, which can be mutually exclusive and fully represent the connection relation among n components. Secondly, the heuristic reasoning on the binary hierarchical relations and the algorithm are proposed. Finally we simulate the relations of the robot and obstacles, and provide a basis for making the robot obstacle avoidance scheme, then the validity of this method is proved from theory and practice.

Abstract:To improve artificial intelligence (AI) of computer games is a hard problem. Qualitative spatial reasoning is utilized to solve this problem. In qualitative spatial reasoning various aspects of qualitative spatial reasoning such as topology, direction, size and distance have been widely investigated in pervious literatures. Although, the combination works of two or more spatial aspects are more useful than the single one in computer game and other applications, most combining problems have not been discussed before. So a unified model for qualitative topology and distance information is proposed. Finally this method is applied to strategy computer games.

Abstract:Spatial change is an important phenomenon in many domains. The previous spatial change models can not support qualitative reasoning, so they are not suitable for knowledge based systems. We propose a knowledge representation and reasoning method for identity based spatial change. A change process is presented by a multistage graph. The binary relation model BC for identity change is defined. Then the qualitative reasoning for BC is investigated. The qualitative reasoning algorithms are applied in cadastral data to improve the complex spatio-temporal queries and analyze the incomplete information. The previous spatial change data models can not do the same jobs. Finally some first results are given on combining BC and topological relations.

Abstract:Most previous qualitative spatial or spatio-temporal reasoning researches focused only on a single aspect, and in fact those were inadequate for practical applications. This paper studies the representation of orientation, distance, time and their interrelations, and then a representation and reasoning technique that integrates orientation, distance and time information is presented. It can determine the position relations between two spatial entities after a period of time. While the model comes out to be concise in expressing and easy for reasoning, it integrates spatial and temporal information effectively. The model in this paper has potential applications in areas as diverse as Geographical Information System(GIS), spatio-temporal database and robotic navigation.

Abstract:Most previous qualitative spatial or spatio-temporal reasoning researches focused only on one single aspect and therefore were inadequate for realistic applications. A representation and reasoning technology for integrating topology, size and time information are proposed and applied to a spatio-temporal geographical information system. The representations of topology, size and time are defined and their interdependence is studied. Then an algorithm TriRSAT which can solve the CSP of these three aspects of information is put forward. The representations are used in the constraint base and the TriRSAT is applied to the consistence check of the spatial-temporal data and query. The methods and theories integrating spatio-temporal information effectively can be potentially applied to spatio-temporal database and robot navigation.

Abstract:The ability to persist in the spacial environment is, not only in the robotic context, an essential feature. Positional knowledge is one of the most important aspects of space and a number of methods to represent these information have been developed in the in the research area of spatial cognition. The basic qualitative spatial representation and reasoning techniques are presented in this thesis and several calculi are briefly reviewed. Features and applications of qualitative calculi are summarized. A new calculus for representing and reasoning about qualitative spatial orientation and distances is being designed. It supports an arbitrary level of granularity over ternary relations of points. Ways of improving the complexity of the composition are shown and an implementation of the calculus demonstrates its capabilities. Existing qualitative spatial calculi of positional information are compared to the new approach and possibilities for future research are outlined.

Abstract:Previous qualitative spatial reasoning (QSR) studies the qualitative constraints satisfaction problem for single relations on single kind of objects. Heterogeneous QSR is proposed, which includes the spatial reasoning for heterogeneous spatial objects, heterogeneous spatial relations and the fusion of qualitative and quantitative objects. The combination of more than three heterogeneous relations is studied, while the previous works focused on two relations. The reasoning algorithm for heterogeneous objects is given, while previous works only studied the representation models. The spatial reasoning which combines qualitative objects and quantitative objects is put forward. An alternative expression for this problem is the extension from a partial solution to a global solution. These results can be applied to Ambient Intelligence and other applications.

Abstract:Reasoning about spatial relations has been used in many fields,therefore a lot of spatial reasoning methods have been proposed.To compare and analyze existing methods,it is necessary to establish the classification system of spatial reasoning methods and evaluate these methods according to the system.Such work not only helps to correctly understand and apply existing methods,but also facilitates to develop new ones.Therefore,it is an essential work to establish such a classification system.In this paper,eight factors:the types of spatial relations,models of spatial relations,reference system of spatial reasoning,dynamic change of spatial entities,types of spatial objects,scale and hierarchical characteristics of spatial objects,have been used as the classification indicators.And then,they are used to compare and evaluate existing spatial reasoning methods.

Abstract:The development of formal models of spatial relations is an important topic in spatial reasoning, geographic information system(GIS) and robot navigation, and has gained much attention from researchers during the recent years. Progress has been made in the models of directional relations between spatial objects. The primary research contents, methods and advancements of formal models for directional relations between spatial objects are introduced, and comparison among various existing models of directional relation is made at the same time. Abstract:The theory research on spatial relationships has gotten considerable attention in the field of GIS.There are many researches on this field.But,at present,the topological and direction relations' reasoning model usually uses separateness in the theory research on spatial relationships,affects the spatial reasoning's precision and spatial expression.Based on the representation model of topological relations and direction relations,this paper puts forward the new model:TD model,in which the topological and direction relations are assembled,and the example shows that the TD model can all-sided describe the spatial relations of spatial objects.
