Abstract:Quality of Service(QoS) is a fundamental problem of IP network in real-time distributed multimedia application, but the current solutions, such as InterServ/RSVP, DiffServ and MPLS, suffer from their dependence on the support of network protocol and hardware, for example, router and switch, thus making them unfeasible in reality. A novel hierarchical and adaptive QoS control model is proposed, in which several strategies, such as traffic control, video frame transmission speed adjusting, layered video encoding, forward error coding and rate adaptive encoding, are realized and integrated into the QoS model effectively and seamlessly. This model is implemented by hierarchy architecture. Now it has already been applied and verified in the distance learning system named RealClass, and proved that better QoS can be gotten than others under the same network condition. It also shows good scalability and suitability since this QoS model has no extra requirement for IP network.
