Abstract:This paper proposes an exception handling mechanism for developing reliable object-oriented systems based on analyzing some problems encountered in the C++ programming language. The exceptions are organized into a knowledge sharing inheritance hierarchy and the handlers can be defined within exception classes. This enables the information to be hidden. The separation between the normal codes and the exception handling codes makes the program neat and maintainable. It supports both the termination and the retry model. Binding the exception to the object responsible for its raise can solve the issue of matching the handler relying on only the exception type.

Detecting Exception Handling Bugs in C++ Programs.

Abstract:Exception handling is a mechanism in modern programming languages. Studies have shown that the exception handling code is error-prone. However, there is still limited research on detecting exception handling bugs, especially for C++ programs. To tackle the issue, we try to precisely represent the exception control flow in C++ programs and propose an analysis method that makes use of the control flow to detect such bugs. More specifically, we first extend control flow graph by introducing the concepts of five different kinds of basic blocks, and then modify the classic symbolic execution framework by extending the program state to a quadruple and properly processing try, throw and catch statements. Based on the above techniques, we develop a static analysis tool on the top of Clang Static Analyzer to detect exception handling bugs. We run our tool on projects with high stars from GitHub and find 36 exception handling bugs in 8 projects, with a precision of 84%. We compare our tool with four state-of-the-art static analysis tools (Cppcheck, Clang Static Analyzer, Facebook Infer and IKOS) on projects from GitHub and handmade benchmarks. On the GitHub projects, other tools are not able to detect any exception handling bugs found by our tool. On the handmade benchmarks, our tool has a significant higher recall.

Abstract:Real-time operating systems (RTOSs) such as mu C/OS-II are critical components of many industrial systems, which makes it of vital importance to verify their correctness. However, earlier specifications for verification of RTOSs often do not explicitly specify the behavior of possible unbounded kernel service invocations. To address the problem, a new event-based modelling approach is recently proposed to treat the operating system as a concurrent reactive system (CRS). Besides, a respective parametric rely-guarantee style reasoning framework called PiCore is developed to verify such systems effectively. Witnessing the advancement, we conduct a case study to investigate the use of PiCore to compositionally verify two important entangled modules of a practical RTOS mu C/OS-II, i.e., the memory management module and the mailbox module. Several desirable safety properties regarding the memory pools and mailboxes are formally defined and proved with PiCore (approximate to 2500 lines of specifications and proof scripts in Isabelle/HOL) based on a formal execution model considering the two modules simultaneously. We also discuss the shortcomings of PiCore for our case study and present possible improvement directions.

Abstract:Exception handling in modern programming languages is a mechanism that can improve software robustness. Since the signature of an C~(++) function may not specify the set of exceptions that the function can propagate,it is neces- sary to figure out the exceptions that may be raised during executing program,the origins of the exceptions and their exception propagation paths.Unfortunately,in large programs,this exceptional information can be difficult,if not im- possible,to determine.Firstly,the paper presents a model that can describe the exception handling information for C~(++) exception handling mechanism,and applies the model to recursive functions.Then describes CETool,a static a- nalysis tool we have developed to provide exception-flow information for C~(+1) systems based on this model.The CETool provides the information related to the explicit exceptions.The information is helpful to support the improvements to the exception handling structure of a system and structure testing of a program.It also presents the implementation of CETool and its application.

Abstract:Exception handling is a technology that tests and handles exception.Exception propagation induces a control flow other than the main control flow,so it changes the data flows,control flows of programs and the dependence relationshi Pbetween the structure elements of programs.For the analysis of C++ programs to be correct and precise,the flows induced by exception propagation must be properly analyzed.The paper describes the design and implementation of the CETool,an exception propagation analysis tool we have developed to provide exception propagation information for C++ systems.The CETool can effectively analyze the exception propagation of C++ program.It can provide the local information of the exception propagation of an exception,and also the whole information of exception propagation for the program.The information is helpful to analyze exception propagation,analyze exception propagation path,and support the improvements to the exception handling structure of a system.

Abstract:To solve the problems that the exception handling code is hard to test and maintain and that it affects the robustness and reliability of software, a method for evaluating the exception handling of programs is presented. The exception propagation graph (EPG) that describes the large programs with exception handling constructs is proposed by simplifying the control flow graph and it is applied to a case to verify its validity.According to the EPG, the exception handling code that never executes is identified;the points that are the most critical to controlling exception propagation are found;and the irrational exception handling code is corrected. The constructing algorithm for the EPG is given;thus, this provides a basis for automatically constructing the EPG and automatically correcting the irrational exception handling code.

Abstract:The C programming language is expressive and flexible, but not safe; as its expressive power and flexibility are obtained through unsafe language features, and improper use of these features can lead to program bugs whose causes are hard to identify. Since C is widely used, and it is impractical to rewrite all existing C programs in safe languages, so ways must be found to make C programs safe. This paper deals with the unsafe features of C and presents a survey on existing solutions to make C programs safe. We have studied binary-level instrumentation tools, source checkers, source-level instrumentation tools and safe dialects of C, and present a comparison of different solutions, summarized the strengths and weaknesses of different classes of solutions, and show measures that could possibly improve the accuracy or alleviate the overhead of existing solutions.

Abstract:Exception handling in modern programming languages is a mechanism that can improve software reliability. Unfortunately, in large programs that contain recursive functions, this exceptional information can be difficult, if not impossible, to determine. Therefore, the paper proposes a new static analysis approach to analyze C++ recursive functions with exception handling constructs. Firstly, it presents a model that can describe the exception handling information for a C++ single function. Then, it proposes a new method to compute the set of exception types that propagate from a recursive function. Finally, the limitations and the applications of the model are discussed.

Abstract:The exception-handling mechanism has been widely adopted to deal with exception conditions that may arise during program executions. To produce high-quality programs, developers are expected to handle these exception conditions and take necessary recovery or resource-releasing actions. Failing to handle these exception conditions can lead to not only performance degradation, but also critical issues. Developers can write formal specifications to capture expected exception-handling behavior, and then apply tools to automatically analyze program code for detecting specification violations. However, in practice, developers rarely write formal specifications. To address this issue, mining techniques have been used to mine common exception-handling behavior out of program code. In this paper, we discuss challenges and achievements in precisely specifying and mining formal exception-handling specifications, as tackled by our previous work. Our key insight is that expected exception-handling behavior may be “conditional” or may need to accommodate “exceptional” cases.

Abstract:Exception handling is a practical and important way to improve the availability and reliability of a component-based system. The classical code-level exception handling approach is usually applied to the inside of a component, while some exceptions can only or properly be handled outside of the components. In this paper, we propose a middleware-enabled approach for exception handling at architecture level. Developers specify what exceptions should be handled and how to handle them with the support of middleware in an exception handling model, which is complementary to software architecture of the target system. This model will be interpreted at runtime by a middleware-enabled exception handling framework, which is responsible for catching and handling the specified exceptions mainly based on the common mechanisms provided by the middleware. The approach is demonstrated in JEE application servers and benchmarks.

Abstract:Developers often neglect to handle exceptions, which leads to exception handling defects that affect the robustness of applications or even cause crashes. To improve the robustness of android applications while reducing the development burden of developers, we present Fixeh and Automatic Detection Tool, as an approach that can automatically detect exception handling defects related to external resources. By implanting exception control codes into the input application, Fixeh helps applications throw exceptions at the specified call position while running the UI test. During running the UI test, Automatic Detection Tool generates a limited number of exception trigger patterns by using suspicious call filtering algorithm and traversal algorithm. After collecting and analyzing the running results under these patterns, the exception handling defects will be detected. We evaluate our approach by applying it to detect anomalies in 6 different types of applications with stable operation. We conducted 1422 rounds of experiments under different exception triggering patterns, and we observed abnormalities in 517 rounds. A comparison with other related work shows that our approach can detect defects more effectively. Through the analysis of our experiments, we confirmed 39 exception handling defects related to external resources. Finally, we summarized three common types of defects from them.

Abstract:COM is the one of the most important peripheral interfaces in computer; therefore it is significant to do the study of programming design methods in serial communication. In this paper we discuss the four programming design methods of serial communication on C~(++) Builder 6 platform: direct embedded assembler, Windows API functions, MSComm component based on the technique of ActiveX and Third-Party component SPComm. We also give the compared results of the four programming design methods in serial communication, and provide programming examples.
Constructing Exception Handling Chains for Testing Java Virtual Machine Implementations

Abstract:The Java virtual machine (JVM) is the cornerstone of the Java platforms. A JVM's exception handling implementation interrupts, when the objective application encounters an exception (or an error), the normal execution of the application and performs specific handling tasks. However, little research has been done in systematically validating JVMs' exception handling implementations-test programs or even applications need to be carefully designed for throwing/catching exceptions at runtime; a JVM's exception handling implementation is also complicated, making it challenging to design tests for testing all of its functionalities. Inspired by the recent success of fuzz testing of compilers and JVM implementations, we introduce EHCBuilder, the first technique for fuzzing JVMs' exception handling implementations. The key idea is to construct exception handling chains, each of which abstracts a program's execution into a sequence of exception throwings, catchings, and/or handlings. A classfile seed can then be mutated into test programs with diverse exception handling chains, enabling (1) exceptions to be continuously thrown and caught at runtime, and (2) JVMs' exception handling implementations to be much more thoroughly tested. We have implemented EHCBuilder and evaluated EHCBuilder on popular JVM implementations including OpenJDK's HotSpot, Eclipse's OpenJ9, Azul's Zulu, and Oracle's GraalVM. Our results show that EHCBuilder can generate programs with very intricate exception handling chains and reveal differences among JVMs' exception handling implementations: Up to thousands of lines of source code in HotSpot's exception handling implementation are covered more than the original benchmarks; during 39 K iterations, EHCBuilder generates exception handling chains of different lengths, revealing 258 runtime differences. We classify the differences into four categories, and reveal a fast throw issue confirmed by HotSpot developers and another initCause issue confirmed by the OpenJ9 community.
Detecting Memory-Related Bugs by Tracking Heap Memory Management of C++ Smart Pointers

Abstract:The smart pointer mechanism, which is improved in the continuous versions of the C++ standards over the last decade, is designed to prevent memory-leak bugs by automatically deallocating the managed memory blocks. However, not all kinds of memory errors can be immunized by adopting this mechanism. For example, dereferencing a null smart pointer will lead to a software failure. Due to the lack of specialized support for smart pointers, the off-the-shelf C++ static analyzers cannot effectively reveal these bugs. In this paper, we propose a static approach to detecting memory-related bugs by tracking the heap memory management of smart pointers. The behaviors of smart pointers are modeled during their lifetime to trace the state transitions of managed memory blocks. And the specially designed checkers are used to check the state changes according to five collected bug patterns. To evaluate the effectiveness of our approach, we implement it on the top of the Clang Static Analyzer. A set of handmade code snippets, as well as nine popular open-source C++ projects, are used to compare our tool against four other analyzers. The results show that our approach can successfully discover nearly all the built-in bugs. And 442 out of 648 reports generated from the open-source projects are true positives after manual reviewing, where the bugs of dereferencing null smart pointers are most frequently reported. To further confirm our reports, we design patches for Aria2, Restbed, MySQL and LLVM, in which seven pull requests covering 76 bug reports have been merged by the developers up to now. The results indicate that pointers should always be carefully used even after migrated to smart pointers and static analysis upon specialized models can effectively detect such bugs.

Abstract:Based on analyzing the effects of exception handling constructs on dependence analysis, this paper proposes a precise and efficient representation for C++ programs with exception handling constructs—improved control flow graph. It proposes a new approach to analyzing the data dependences and control dependences of intra-function and inter-function in C++ programs with exception handling constructs, and an efficient algorithm is also presented. This method overcomes the limitations of the previous incorrect analysis because of failing to account for the effects of exception handling constructs, and also provides a basis for automatic dependence analysis that contains exception propagation. Finally, it discusses the application of the dependence analysis method in program slicing.
