Abstract:This paper presents full path routing algorithm and optimal path routing algorithm in underwater communication network. The algorithms are based on the features of underwater sensor’s energy consumption and movement, with the large propagation delay in underwater channel taken into consideration. Theory analysis and simulation results indicate that full path routing algorithm possesses good adaptability to the situation where underwater sensor moves around. Full path routing algorithm is also shown to be able to avoid the routing paralysis caused by any individual path failure. Besides, it can balance the energy consumption of nodes in the entire network. Optimal path routing algorithm is an efficient routing algorithm to solve the problem of limited underwater energy supply. It aims to find all shortest paths, thus the algorithm establishes the routing faster and has lower routing cost which adapts to a wide range of underwater network. Introduction The objective of a routing protocol is to find and to maintain the data transmission path in a communication network [1,2,3,4]. Due to its significance in network communication, routing protocol has always been a hot topic on research of communication protocol. When research is carried out regarding specific applications based on the features of routing protocol in underwater acoustic communication network [5,6], the following requirements are to be met: 1. High energy efficiency: When designing a routing protocol in an underwater acoustic communication network, the data transmission path with the lowest energy cost should be adopted. Moreover, the entire underwater acoustic communication network should be taken into consideration and a routing with balanced cost consumption at all nodes should be adopted. Due to the limited energy in underwater acoustic communication network, the routing protocol is expected to transmit data accurately and effectively [7]. 2. Stability: The nodes of underwater sensors may fail as a result of power exhaustion or environmental impacts such as corrosion and fouling, which may further influence the communication quality of underwater acoustic channels. These features of instability, including the self-defects of the link, require the routing protocol of underwater acoustic communication network to be fault-tolerant [8,9]. 3. Expandability: In the cases of nodes malfunctioning, new nodes being added or nodes moving, the range of detectable area and the density of nodes will be affected. Consequently, the topology of the network will change. Therefore, the routing protocol should be able to adapt to the immediate changes in the network topology [10,11]. This paper is aimed to study routing protocols based on the features of underwater environment. The simulation platform utilized here is OMNeT++ [12].
