Abstract:In this paper, we describe the acquisition and contents of a large-scale Chinese face database: the CAS-PEAL face database. The goals of creating the CAS-PEAL face database include the following: 1) providing the worldwide researchers of face recognition with different sources of variations, particularly pose, expression, accessories, and lighting (PEAL), and exhaustive ground-truth information in one uniform database; 2) advancing the state-of-the-art face recognition technologies aiming at practical applications by using off-the-shelf imaging equipment and by designing normal face variations in the database; and 3) providing a large-scale face database of Mongolian. Currently, the CAS-PEAL face database contains 99 594 images of 1040 individuals (595 males and 445 females). A total of nine cameras are mounted horizontally on an arc arm to simultaneously capture images across different poses. Each subject is asked to look straight ahead, up, and down to obtain 27 images in three shots. Five facial expressions, six accessories, and 15 lighting changes are also included in the database. A selected subset of the database (CAS-PEAL-R1, containing 30 863 images of the 1040 subjects) is available to other researchers now. We discuss the evaluation protocol based on the CAS-PEAL-R1 database and present the performance of four algorithms as a baseline to do the following: 1) elementarily assess the difficulty of the database for face recognition algorithms; 2) preference evaluation results for researchers using the database; and 3) identify the strengths and weaknesses of the commonly used algorithms.

Abstract:For biometric person authentication, evaluations on a biometric system are very essential parts of the entire process. This paper presents the technology evaluations on the TH-FACE recognition system. The main objectives of the evaluations are to 1) test the performance of the TH-FACE recognition system objectively; 2) provide a method to design and organize a database for evaluations; 3) identify the advantage and weakness for the TH-FACE recognition system. Particular description of the test database used in the evaluations is given in this paper. The database contains different subsets which are sorted by different poses, illuminations, ages, accessory, etc. Results and analysis on the entire performances of the TH-FACE recognition system would be also presented.
A comparative study of face recognition algorithms on R1 face database

Abstract:This paper introduces the development process of face recognition and analyses representative algorithms for each period. Considering different races and numbers of samples in database, and a wide variety of pose, shelter, illumination, and expressions, different algorithms are tested based on the application requirement. It adopts CAS-PEAL-R1 face database, composed entirely by Asian faces, while the previous face recognition test are almost all based on Europe and America face database. The main work is to get two indices (recognition rate and recognition time) when applying different algorithms on R1 face database and then analysis the advantages as well as disadvantages of each algorithm. According to the comparison of the indices for each algorithm, it showed that LBP algorithm achieves state-of-the-art performance in both recognition rate and time, so it meets the requirements for real-time recognition. In addition, although the SFD (Improved SIFT Algorithm) obtained the highest recognition rate in the comparison, it doesn't satisfy the requirements in real-time recognition system for its long recognition time. Contrast previous face recognition algorithms utilized on R1 face database, some more comprehensive algorithms are introduced and tested on R1 in this paper and it sure can gives a more comprehensive reference for later researchers.

Abstract:In this paper, we develop an automatic human face recognition system in which several well-known technologies, such as the affine transform, the histogram equalization, the spatial encoding, and the hit–miss transform, are incorporated in a new form. The input image is optically correlated with stored database images consecutively by a shadow-casting correlator after necessary preprocessing steps digitally processed by a computer. A SHARP QA-1200 TFT computer projection panel is used as two spatial light modulators (SLMs) for both the input and the database images. The optical structure is optimized for practical use given the limitations of the present devices. 200 face images have been stored in computer database. The system can now reach an recognition accuracy over 94% and a speed of 12images/s. The tolerance ability to various distortion variances has been tested.

Abstract:Some of face recognition methods based on Principal Component Analysis(PCA),Two-dimensional Principal Component Analysis(2DPCA) and Fisher's Linear Discriminant Analysis(FLDA) are comparatively studied in this paper.On the basis of the analysis of characteristics,application occasion and limitations,a new method of face recognition based on combining 2DPCA and FLDA is proposed.Finally,comparison simulations are performed with the methods and their combined methods by means of ATT face database.The results show that the methods based on 2DPCA can have better recognition precision than the ones based on PCA;the method based on 2DPCA and FLDA improves the real-time characteristics in the condition of keeping the recognition precision and has the best performance.

Abstract:Facial expression is one of the most important ways for human to express their emotions. Automatic Facial Expression Recognition gives machines the ability to understand us human's expressions, and it is one of the most natural-interaction ways. So it is widely studied in many areas, such as Affective Computing, Computing Vision, Pattern Recognition and Image Processing. This paper will begin with how to classify human expressions, and then how to realize Automatic Facial Expression Recognition System. Algorithms used in the system can be split into four sections: Face Detection, Face Alignment, Feature Extraction and Expression Classification. Finally, this paper will discuss some research tendencies of this subject.
2 Face Authentication Test on the BANCA Database

Abstract:Face identification and verification have received more attention in biometric person authentication as their non-invasive, broad useful, and user-friendly. In the Face Authentication Test (FAT2004) held in conjunction with the 17th International Conference on Pattern Recognition, Tsinghua University won the Awards of Best Overall Performance Face Verification Algorithm. In this paper, we will discuss about some problems about improving the face recognition performance. Imitating human face identification through discriminating the face observation is very important for face recognition. Key technologies for distinguishing persons based on face appearances of different position, size, illumination, pose and age: face detection, feature location, size and grey level of face appearance normalization. Also, feature extraction and classification should be the focuses of face recognition research. Dealing with 3D pose variation and aging is the most difficult problem and needs more attention to obtain better face recognition performance.

Abstract:It has been the academic researching subject how to objectively compare the various face identification algorithms. This paper design a system based on the Colorado State University identification evaluation system, which can compare face identification algorithms under application-specific. First of all, introduced the old system; then taken the logging system for desktop of PC as an example, designed the comparing system of face identification algorithms under application-specific, coded the process of achieving and pre-processed data and described the steps of processing data; at last tested PCA_MahCosine, LDA_ldaSoft, Bayesian_ML, PCA_Euclidean and Bayesian_MAP five common face identification methods, conclude Bayesian_ML algorithm is the best algorithm in face recognition logging system for logging on PC desktop and give the parameter in the system, provide a sample for testing face identification algorithms under application-specific.

Abstract:Multi-pose face recognition has became one of important research directions of face recognition. In this paper, the research progress of face recognition is briefly reviewed. Multi-pose face recognition techniques and methods at home and abroad in recent years are introduced briefly and categorized systematically. The advantages and disadvantages of each method are analyzed, and a brief evaluation is made. The challenges of multi-pose face recognition technology are elucidated, and the development di-rection of the future research on multi-pose face recognition is discussed.

Abstract:3D facial expression recognition has been greatly promoted for overcoming the inherent drawbacks of 2D facial expression recognition and has achieved superior recognition accuracy to the 2D. In this paper, a novel holistic, full-automatic approach for 3D facial expression recognition is proposed. First, 3D face models are represented in 2D-image-like structure which makes it possible to take advantage of the wealth of 2D methods to analyze 3D models. Then an enhanced facial representation, namely polytypic multi-block local binary patterns (P-MLBP), is proposed. The P-MLBP involves both the feature-based irregular divisions to depict the facial expressions accurately and the fusion of depth and texture information of 3D models to enhance the facial feature. Based on the BU-3DFE database, three kinds of classifiers are employed to conduct 3D facial expression recognition for evaluation. Their experimental results outperform the state of the art and show the effectiveness of P-MLBP for 3D facial expression recognition. Therefore, the proposed strategy is validated for 3D facial expression recognition; and its simplicity opens a promising direction for fully automatic 3D facial expression recognition.

Abstract:With the advent of the era of artificial intelligence and big data, intelligent security robots not only improve the efficiency of the traditional intelligent security industry but also propose higher requirements for intelligent security. Aiming to solve the problem of long recognition time and high equipment cost of intelligent security robots, we propose a new face recognition method for intelligent security in this paper. We use the Goldstein branching method for phase unwrapping, which can improve the three-dimensional (3D) face reconstruction effect. Subsequently, by using the three-dimensional face recognition method based on face radial curve elastic matching, different weights are assigned to different curve recognition similarity for weighted fusion as the total similarity for recognition. Experiments show that the method has a higher face recognition rate and is robust to attitude, illumination, and noise.

Abstract:In this paper,we present a new method for automatic facial expression recognition.We analyze seven basic expressions:angry,disgust,fear,happiness,neutral,sadness and surprise.First,locate the eyes automatically with the method of geometrical matching;then the Local Binary Pattern(LBP) operator is used to extract face appearance features;finally a two-stage classification method is proposed.The algorithm is tested on the JAFFE database and the result approves its feasibility.

Abstract:Over the past few years, multi-view face detection issue has become one of the most attractive research topics in the field of computer vision. In this paper, a novel automatic system for multi-view face detection and pose estimation is proposed. Our approach adopts modified appearance-based learning methods to build corresponding face detectors and pose estimators, and detects multi-view faces according to a coarse-to-fine structure. The experiments not only demonstrate the ability of our system to automatically identify facial images with a high degree of accuracy, but also verify its ability to estimate the pose angles.

Abstract:SummaryAs a branch of biometrics, face recognition focuses on face features and approaches to distinguishing different individuals through recognizing their faces by virtue of the uniqueness of each face. Face recognition technology using image set, and single image is the main application technology at present. Although the face recognition technology using a single image is relatively mature, it also has some shortcomings. In this paper, Honda/USCD video database is used to compare and analyze the two technologies, and the recognition accuracy of face recognition method based on local binary pattern (LBP) is tested. The results show that the face recognition technology using image sets has better recognition accuracy and can be better applied intelligent shopping, access control system, vehicle access system, intelligent security, identity recognition.

Abstract:The goal of this paper is to present a critical survey of existing literatures on human face recognition over the last 3-4 years. Interest and research activities in face recognition have increased significantly over the past few years, especially after the American airliner tragedy on September 11 in 2001. Abstract:Since the distribution of kernel function of Gabor transform and the 2D receptive field profiles of mam﹣malian simple cells in the primary visual cortex is very similar, and has the direction selectivity and good spatial locali﹣ty, so the acquisition of spatial scale information of multiple directions and local structure features in the local regions of images provides a more effective method. In order to verify the efficiency and accuracy of based on Gabor features face recognition methods, this paper proposes a comparative research for face recognition by using the methods the present four kind of traditional features extraction and the methods of based on Gabor features extraction, at the same time, using two parameters including ROC and CMC to validate the efficiency and accuracy of based on Gabor features face recognition method. In ORL face database, the experimental results show that the face recognition methods based on Gabor features in the same conditions obtain higher face recognition rate and the robustness.
