Abstract:Achieving high code coverage is essential in testing, which gives us confidence in code quality. Testing floating-point code usually requires painstaking efforts in handling floating-point constraints, e.g., in symbolic execution. This paper turns the challenge of testing floating-point code into the opportunity of applying unconstrained programming --- the mathematical solution for calculating function minimum points over the entire search space. Our core insight is to derive a representing function from the floating-point program, any of whose minimum points is a test input guaranteed to exercise a new branch of the tested program. This guarantee allows us to achieve high coverage of the floating-point program by repeatedly minimizing the representing function. We have realized this approach in a tool called CoverMe and conducted an extensive evaluation of it on Sun's C math library. Our evaluation results show that CoverMe achieves, on average, 90.8% branch coverage in 6.9 seconds, drastically outperforming our compared tools: (1) Random testing, (2) AFL, a highly optimized, robust fuzzer released by Google, and (3) Austin, a state-of-the-art coverage-based testing tool designed to support floating-point code.

Optimization and Implementation of SR T -16 Floating-Point Divider Based on FPGA

Abstract:Currently., there is a significant absence of FPGA or CPLD chips with integrated floating point division IP cores or high operational accuracy., such as China's Gowin and Ziguang Tongchuang FPGA chips. These chips are widely utilized due to their affordability; however., the lack of division components or IP cores restricts the popularization and application of multiple information processing systems. This paper will presents an optimization of the traditional SRT-16 divider by proposing a parallel structure that shares partial remainder and quotient number selection functions to reduce circuit area., and the optimized algorithm is successfully implemented on the PGL22H chip from Ziguang Tongchuang company. Through the modelsim simulation and system test verification., it accurately outputs floating point quotient values with a delay of 8 cycles for single precision and 16 cycles for double precision calculations. In terms of resource utilization., compared to the traditional SRT-16 approach., this optimized design reduces the number of L UTs by 24.71 % and flip-flops by 36.16%. This method can be effectively applied to system development and provides a solution to the problem of lacking floating-point division component.

Abstract:When testing the IEEE Float Point(FP)arithmetic,there are so many corner cases among the complicated test cases that checking the correctness of FP instruction becomes especially difficult.Aiming at the weakness of directly random testing,thesis presents a method called Test using the Boundary Filter to generate test cases.Its ideas are modeling the boundary condition of the FP arithmetic,getting the solution of this modeling,constructing a filtering standard by the solution and filtering the operand for testing.Using this method to test C387L math coprocessor proves this method is more reliable.
Floating-point to Fixed-point Transformation Using Extreme Value Theory

Abstract:Efficient hardware implementation of digital signal processing and communication algorithms requires using fixed-point arithmetic. However, most of these algorithms are developed in floating-point arithmetic. The automation of floating-point to fixed-point transformation is a key step for high-level synthesis. Based on Extreme Value Theory, this paper presents a novel approach to find both the optimal integer and fractional bit-widths for signals. Compared to traditional full simulation-based methods, this approach uses lightweight simulations to study the characteristics of extreme conditions. With theoretical probabilities to prevent overflows and meet the output error constraint, the proposed approach provides more practical solutions than those by analytical methods. Case studies and experimental results demonstrate its efficiency.

Abstract:Recently, agile hardware design (AHD) methodology has been proposed to alleviate the productivity crisis brought by the growing complexity of modern microprocessor design. One of the key techniques in AHD is the adoption of hardware construction languages (HCLs) which have greatly improved the design productivity. However, the adoption of HCLs arises new challenges to design verification. In this paper, we proposed an enhanced coverage-directed dynamic verification technique for microprocessor RTL designs modeled using PyRTL HCL. The intention of the proposed method is to achieve higher coverage in dynamic verification. The proposed method is a hybrid between symbolic simulation and grammar-based fuzz testing, which offsets the disadvantages of each separate technique. We define Full Multiplexer Toggle Coverage (FMTC) to trace and provide feedback to the verification process. The achievement of high coverage is obtained by interleaving symbolic simulation and grammar-based fuzz testing passes. The symbolic simulation pass is used to generate tests that direct the testing to untouched corners, while the grammar-based fuzz testing pass is used to leverage test generation tasks and to enable the method to deal with microprocessor designs with a specific instruction set architecture (ISA). In addition, to further reduce testing cost, we propose a test compression technique to compress the generated test instructions by dropping redundant instructions. Finally, we implement all the enhancements in a test generation tool, named MPFuzz . Experimental results show that MPFuzz can efficiently generate test instructions for microprocessor RTL designs. The test instructions generated by MPFuzz can achieve higher coverage at least four times than that by the state-of-the-art fuzzing-based RTL test generation tool.
Automatic Implementation of Arithmetic Functions in High-Level Synthesis

Abstract:Implementation of floating-point arithmetic functions is an essential task in high-level synthesis (HLS). However, most of the existing HLS EDA tools cannot well synthesize floating-point functions. In this paper, we present an automatic method to implement general floating-point functions using piecewise polynomial approximation. Based on the proposed hardware architecture, our method achieves compact implementations, which have low delay and high throughput. Experiment shows that compared with existing methods, the proposed method reduces register usage by about 10%.
New Quantization Error Assessment Methodology for Fixed-Point Pipeline FFT Processor Design

Abstract:Since the blooming of mobile computing era, all semiconductor providers are seeking to provide low-power, high-performance, high-compact solutions to consumers. System on Chip (SoC) is a prominent solution for integrating multiple functions into one compact size chip. However, for many new applications with high intensive computing demands, such as GPS location, High Definition (HD) video recording and processing, Orthogonal Frequency-Division Multiplexing (OFDM), etc. System designers usually utilize fixed point algorithms other than floating-point algorithms as a trade-off between precession and memory occupation. One of the challenging works in designing a fixed-point FFT processor is to assess the quantization error introduced by wordlength configuration. An optimized wordlength configuration will eliminate the output quantization error in some extent, and save a large amount of memory space, which has become a crucial part of SoC/ASIC design. In this paper, we proposed a quantization error model based method to assess the output SQNR (Signal-to-Quantization-Noise Ratio), and we thoroughly discussed a matrix representation of a radix-2 2 Decimation-In-Frequency (DIF) FFT quantization error propagation model. In addition, we comprehensively analyze and disclose the quantitative relationships among wordlength configuration, fixed-point FFT architecture and output SQNR. A new wordlength configuration method named PMBM (Performance-Memory Balanced Method) for fixed-point pipeline FFT processor is also proposed. Eventually, we testified our method in both a 256-point FFT and a 1024-point FFT using SystemC platform. The experiment results show that our method significantly decrease the memory usage of a pipeline FFT by 26% (256-point) and 30% (1024-point) respectively. We implemented a 16K-point FFT ASIC to verify our method.
A Synthesis Method of General Floating-Point Arithmetic Units by Aligned Partition

Abstract:Since many embedded applications involve intensive mathematic operations, floating-point arithmetic units (FPU) have paramount importance in embedded systems. However, previous implementations of FPU either require much manual work or only support special functions (e.g. reciprocal, square root, logarithm, etc.). In this paper, we present an automatic method to synthesize general FPU by aligned partition. Based on the novel partition algorithm and the concept of grouping floating-point numbers into zones, our method supports general functions of wide, irreducible domain. The synthesized FPU achieves smaller area, higher frequency, and greater accuracy. Experimental results show that our method achieves 1) on average 90% smaller and 50% faster indexer than the conventional automatic method; 2) on the hyperbolic functions, 20k times smaller error rate and 50% use of LUTs and flip-flops than the conventional manual design.

Abstract:A test generation for FP multiplication verification in compliance with IEEE Standard 754.The basic procedure is: modeling the boundary condition of the FP arithmetic,getting the solution of this modeling,then constructing a filtering standard with the solution and filtering the operand to carry out the test.Application of this method to typical chip Intel387SX and math coprocessor C387L shows that this method is more efficient than random testing.

Abstract:Floating point special numbers overflow and underflow vulnerabilities threaten the software security in programs or software. To find the overflow vulnerabilities features, we design a multi-dimensional structure according to IEEE 754 floating point special numbers formats. Based on special numbers definition in language and arithmetic operation overflow ranges, we analyze the overflow and underflow properties of special numbers arithmetic operation in algebra systems. We test the arithmetic overflow and underflow of floating point special numbers in different CPUs. The experimental results indicate the floating point overflow exists in many kinds of language programs and binary executable software. © 2011 Binary Information Press.
The Design For Testability Of Longtium Microprocessor

Abstract:Modern Microprocessor integrates many millions of transistors, with a deep on-chip pipeline of execution and embedded functions such as large register file and Cache, with a small number of test points, requires the additional design for testability, to simplify test pattern generation and decrease test complexity. Longtium microprocessor, which is compatible with x86 instruction system, is designed for embedded system. In order to reduce the cost for system integration, design for testability should be use in the design. This paper analyzes the structure of the microprocessor firstly, then analyzes the popular methods used in design for testability, and proposes built-in-self-test (BIST) should be used in the microprocessor. In the design, march-algorithm is used in testing cache, linear feedback shifter register is used in testing other logic module. Because Wallace multiplier is on the critical timing path in the microprocessor, the DFT circuit introduces more timing penalty. From analysis, it shows that a 32-bit MUX cause the timing cost. The location of the MUX is changed to optimize timing, whereas the function of the BIST circuit is not changed. With Design Compiler and TetraMax from Synopsys Inc, it is estimated that the BIST incurs only 4.2% area overhead and 5.1% timing overhead, whereas gets 98.4% faulty coverage. This microprocessor is integrated into an SOC, which has. been implemented with 0.18 mu m CMOS technology in SMIC successfully.
Design of a Floating-point Coprocessor and Its Applications in Digital Platform for Power Electronics

Abstract:Due to the problem caused by word effect and computation capacity of fixed-point DSPs,floating-point DSPs have to be adopted in some power electronic applications.In order to relieve the bottleneck of computation in the digital platform based on fixed-point DSP for power electronic systems,the paper proposed a new architecture to enhance the computation capacity of this kind digital platform by configuring a floating-point coprocessor using FPGA(Field Programmable Gate Array).Detailed design procedures of the coprocessor are presented,and a novel simplified algorithm for floating-point division is proposed.Error analysis of the proposed algorithm shows that the maximum absolute approximate error is less than 2ulp(Unit in Last Place).The coprocessor speed can reach up to 25 MFLOP(Million Floating-point Operations).FFT(Fast Fourier Transform)algorithm is adopted to test the computational efficiency of the floating-point units.Experimental results show the computation time by FPU is five times less than that of DSP algorithms.
Efficient Global Search for Inputs Triggering High Floating-Point Inaccuracies

Abstract:Floating-point rounding errors are pervasive when using numerical code to implement the real arithmetic algorithm. In particular, high floating-point inaccuracies may cause serious problems once being triggered. Hence, a testing method that can find concrete test cases to trigger high floating-point inaccuracies, is quite helpful to aid debugging and reduce high inaccuracies. Recently, two testing approaches have been proposed to find inputs triggering high floating-point inaccuracies in numerical programs: Locality-Sensitive Genetic Algorithm (LSGA) and Binary Guided Random Testing (BGRT). However, experiments show that LSGA may result in a high rate of false alarm while BART may easily fall into a local maximum when the search space is large. In this paper, we propose a novel testing approach to trigger high floating-point inaccuracies in numerical code. The main idea is utilizing heuristic rules drawn from error analysis to guide the process of global search of test cases. Comparative experiments with the random and BGRT methods are conducted on benchmarks including real-world scientific programs. Experimental results show that our approach can efficiently find inputs that trigger higher floating-point inaccuracies in 11 of 12 real-world programs (especially for programs whose input space are large) and have better stability.

Abstract:Based on the IEEE754 standard,a double precision floating point division is designed.The whole design include six parts,which are preprocess,exp_sub,fra_div,format_rounding,overflowing and exception.The fra_div is implemented by five different arithmetic,which include SRT radix-4,improved parallel radix-4,radix-8,radix-16 and radix-256.This paper also analyses the result of the simulation and logic synthesis,and find out they can be used on different places because of their virtue.If considering factors of clock,delay and area,parallel radix-8 and radix-16 arithmetic is perfect choice.
A Genetic Algorithm for Detecting Significant Floating-Point Inaccuracies

Abstract:It is well-known that using floating-point numbers may inevitably result in inaccurate results and sometimes even cause serious software failures. Safety-critical software often has strict requirements on the upper bound of inaccuracy, and a crucial task in testing is to check whether significant inaccuracies may be produced. The main existing approach to the floating-point inaccuracy problem is error analysis, which produces an upper bound of inaccuracies that may occur. However, a high upper bound does not guarantee the existence of inaccuracy defects, nor does it give developers any concrete test inputs for debugging. In this paper, we propose the first metaheuristic search-based approach to automatically generating test inputs that aim to trigger significant inaccuracies in floating-point programs. Our approach is based on the following two insights: (1) with FPDebug, a recently proposed dynamic analysis approach, we can build a reliable fitness function to guide the search; (2) two main factors --- the scales of exponents and the bit formations of significands --- may have significant impact on the accuracy of the output, but in largely different ways. We have implemented and evaluated our approach over 154 real-world floating-point functions. The results show that our approach can detect significant inaccuracies in the subjects.

Abstract:The tested performance of a microprocessor chip is more important than the predicted performance of it’s model. However, performance deviations are often introduced during the design stages. In order to identify and fix the performance defects, a hierarchical performance verification methodology is proposed. Parameter sensitive performance models and coverage driven stimulus are built at the unit-level. Implementation oriented performance calibration and RTL simulation based benchmarks are made at the core-level. Prototyping and counter-based performance analysis systems are built in the system level. An example is given to demonstrate the application and effectiveness of the proposed methodology.
Study on the FPGA Realization of a Self-Defined Floating-Point FFT/IFFT Processor

Abstract:The FPGA realization of a self-defined floating-point FFT/IFFT processor is proposed to get over the poor precision of a fixed-point FFT/IFFT processor. The floating-point format is defined based on the demands of engineering and the features of the FPGA, and the key techniques including implementing the floating-point computa- tion and improving the operating rate of butterfly computation are discussed, then an FFT/IFFT processor with vari- able data length is realized using FPGA. Such a processor has been put into service and has achieved a stable perfor- mance. Its operating frequency is 80MHz and it can finish 1 024-point FFT/IFFT in 64μs with the error less than -80 dB and power less than 1 W.

Abstract:The calculation precision and operation efficiency of aero-engine FADEC system control software are a pair of indispensable features.To improve the computing accuracy and operating efficiency,the aero-engine FADEC software design has been evolved from fixed-point arithmetic to floating-point arithmetic.The error and accuracy of IEEE 754 floating-point number representation are analyzed.Some engineering project cases show the correctness of the analysis.Based on the analysis,some criteria of floating-point algorithm design have been proposed to improve the safety and reliability of FADEC software.Also the criterion can be generalized to other industrial control domain applications.
An Efficient Verification Method for Microprocessors Based on the Virtual Machine

Abstract:This paper presents an efficient verification method for microprocessors based on virtual machine. Under memory and I/O device models provided by the virtual machine, our simulation tool can not only simulate test programs but also operating systems. This simulation environment is close to the real environment of microprocessors, so it is sufficient for functional verification of microprocessors before tape out. At the same time, our simulation tool can automatically compare the simulation results using the virtual machine as reference model and find the error positions. This method takes full advantage of the virtual machine and greatly improves speed and efficiency of the verification procedure. This method has been successfully applied in the verification of an embedded microprocessor Amex86 designed in our laboratory for six months by five persons.

Abstract:Precision analysis and optimization is very important when transforming a floating-point algorithm into fixed-point hardware implementations. The core analysis techniques are either based on dynamic analysis or static analysis. We believe in staticerror analysis, as it is the only technique that can guarantee the desired worst-case accuracy. In this paper we study various underlying arithmetic candidates that can be used in static error analysis and compare their computed sensitivities. The approaches studied include Affine Arithmetic(AA), General Interval Arithmetic (GIA) and Automatic Differentiation (Symbolic Arithmetic). Our study shows that symbolic method is preferred for expressions with higher order cancelation. For programs without strong cancelation, any method works fairly well and GIA slightly outperforms others. We also study the impact of program transformations on these arithmetics.
