Abstract:When discussing programming issues on social platforms (e.g, Stack Overflow, Twitter), developers often mention APIs in natural language texts. Extracting API mentions from natural language texts serves as the prerequisite to effective indexing and searching for API-related information in software engineering social content. The task of extracting API mentions from natural language texts involves two steps: 1) distinguishing API mentions from other English words (i.e., API recognition), 2) disambiguating a recognized API mention to its unique fully qualified name (i.e., API linking). Software engineering social content lacks consistent API mentions and sentence writing format. As a result, API recognition and linking have to deal with the inherent ambiguity of API mentions in informal text, for example, due to the ambiguity between the API sense of a common word and the normal sense of the word (e.g., append, apply and merge), the simple name of an API can map to several APIs of the same library or of different libraries, or different writing forms of an API should be linked to the same API. In this paper, we propose a semi-supervised machine learning approach that exploits name synonyms and rich semantic context of API mentions for API recognition in informal text. Based on the results of our API recognition approach, we further propose an API linking approach leveraging a set of domain-specific heuristics, including mention-mention similarity, scope filtering, and mention-entry similarity, to determine which API in the knowledge base a recognized API actually refers to. To evaluate our API recognition approach, we use 1205 API mentions of three libraries (Pandas, Numpy, and Matplotlib) from Stack Overflow text. We also evaluate our API linking approach with 120 recognized API mentions of these three libraries.

Abstract:With the development of the network the Web-based multimedia application is becoming more and more popular. How to develop such a system quickly and effectively is becoming a research field. This paper introduces a multimedia subsystem in the Web-based real-time cooperative edit system and gives the way to develop a Web-based multimedia system. We first discuss the Web-based multimedia system's architecture based on the network bandwidth, server load, haleness and so on and then put forward a hybrid system architecture. Combined with the Java media framework (JMF), real-time transport protocol (RPT), Internet group management protocol (IGMP) technology, we introduce the key steps to develop a Web-based multimedia system.

From API to NLI: A New Interface for Library Reuse

Abstract:Developers frequently reuse APIs from existing libraries to implement certain functionality. However, learning APIs is difficult due to their large scale and complexity. In this paper, we design an abstract framework NLI2Code to ease the reuse process. Under the framework, users can reuse library functionalities with a high-level, automatically-generated NLI (Natural Language Interface) instead of the detailed API elements. The framework consists of three components: a functional feature extractor to summarize the frequently-used library functions in natural language form, a code pattern miner to give a code template for each functional feature, and a synthesizer to complete code patterns into well-typed snippets. From the perspective of a user, a reuse task under NLI2Code starts from choosing a functional feature and our framework will guide the user to synthesize the desired solution. We instantiated the framework as a tool to reuse Java libraries. The evaluation shows our tool can generate a high-quality natural language interface and save half of the coding time for newcomers to solve real-world programming tasks.

Abstract:Modern software development typically involves composing functionality by reusing existing libraries. This task is difficult due to the gap of abstraction levels between user tasks and APIs. In this paper we propose a new concept LibNLI (Library Natural Language Interface) to bridge the gap. LibNLI is a domain-specific language encapsulating APIs into library functions, which is more high-level and instructive than library APIs. In LibNLI, user can reuse libraries with the description of the current programming task. We design an abstract framework NLI2Code to illustrate how to build and use LibNLI.The framework combines three components: functional feature summarizes functionality of a library, code pattern maps each functional feature to its implementation, synthesizer creates local variables to complete code patterns into well-typed snippets. The main goal of NLI2Code is to show feasibility of reusing libraries with natural language interface and lay out the design space to motivate further related research.We have performed a preliminary evaluation by instantiating this framework in a tool NLI4j to reuse Java libraries. The results affirm its capability to summarize accurate functional features and synthesize correct implementation. LibNLI for the evaluated libraries is published.
Refactoring Java Code for Automatic API Generation

Abstract:With the development of the Internet, a large number of computer applications have emerged, and the quantity is still growing rapidly. These applications contain a lot of useful data and functions, however, as most of them are not available and couldn't interact with each other, so the data and functions are difficult to shared and reused, resulting in a huge waste of resources. In order to solve this problem, secondary development is needed on the basis of the source system. For example, it is necessary to collect data from client applications or integrate their functions. Therefore, a framework of automatic encapsulation API based on the client system is proposed in this paper. Firstly, using a design pattern to reconstruct the runtime software architecture. Secondly, an algorithm is proposed for parameter matching to automatically construct API template. Thirdly, a framework is implemented to support design patterns and matching algorithms. In conclusion, we experimented with a real client system, and the results show that in most cases our method can effectively encapsulate and reduce the execution time of the functions.

Abstract:ABSTRACTProgrammers often learn how to use an API by studying its usage examples. There are many usage examples scattered in web pages on the Internet. However, it often takes programmers much effort to find out the desired examples from a large number of web pages by web search. This paper proposes a tool named APIExample that can extract usage examples for java APIs from web pages on the Internet and recommend them to programmers. Given a java API, the tool collects its related web pages from the Internet, extracts java code snippets and their surrounding descriptive texts embedded in the pages, then assembles them into usage examples for programmers. Furthermore, in order to help programmers capture more kinds of usages of the target API by browsing fewer examples, our tool clusters and ranks the listed examples based on the target API's usage. Besides, as a practical tool, APIExample provides multiple aspects of frequently-used information about using the target API in a concise user interface with friendly user experience. Two kinds of user-interaction style, a web search portal and an Eclipse plug-in, are now both publicly available.

Abstract:Application program interface (API) mapping is the key to the success of code migration. Leveraging API documentation to map APIs has been explored by previous studies, and recently, code-based learning approaches have become the mainstream approach and shown better results. However, learning approaches often require a large amount of training data (e.g., projects implemented using multiple languages or API mapping datasets), which are not widely available. In contrast, API documentation is usually available, but we have observed that much information in API documentation has been underexploited. Therefore, we develop a deep-dive approach to extensively explore API documentation to create improved API mapping methods. Our documentation exploration approach involves analyzing the functional description of APIs, and also considers the parameters and return values. The results of this analysis can be used to generate not only one-to-one API mapping, but also compatible API sequences, thereby enabling one-to-many API mapping. In addition, parameter-mapping relationships, which have often been ignored in previous approaches, can be produced. We apply this approach to map APIs from Java to Swift, and the experimental results indicate that our deep-dive analysis of API documentation leads to API mapping results that are superior to those generated by existing approaches.

Therefore, using modern information technology and online high-quality educational resources, the author of this paper has constructed a set of online teaching platform of “Introduction to Art” based on JSP technology. The platform uses Java language for overall development, introduces SpringMVC framework for process building, and combines MySQL database technology to set up two login roles of students and teachers, thus establishing an equal and open platform for learning and communication between teachers and students. At the same time, the system also provides a new mode for the education of “Introduction to Art”, which effectively improves students’ learning interest and efﬁciency, and helps art design students to consolidate their basic knowledge and cultivate their artistic sentiments.

SINk: A Middleware for Synchronization of Heterogeneous Software Interfaces

Abstract:Software is everywhere. The increasing requirement of supporting a wide variety of domains has rapidly increased the complexity of software systems, making them hard to maintain and the training process harder for end-users, which in turn ultimately demanded the development of user-friendly application software with simple interfaces that makes them easy, especially for non-professional personnel, to employ, and interact with. However, due to the lack of source code access for third-party software and the lack of non-graphical interfaces such as web-services or RMI (Remote Method Invocation) access to application functionality, synchronization between heterogeneous closed-box software interfaces and a user-friendly version of those interfaces has become a major challenge. In this paper, we design SINk1, a middleware that enables synchronization of multiple heterogeneous software applications, using only graphical interface, without the need for source code access or access to the entire platform's control. SINk helps with synchronization of closed-box industry software, where in fact the only possible way of communication is through software interfaces. It leverages efficient client sever architecture, socket based protocol, adaptation to resolution changes, and parameter mapping mechanisms to transfer control events to ensure the real-time requirements of synchronization among multiple interfaces are met. Our proof-of-concept evaluation shows there is in fact potential usage of our middleware in a wide variety of domains.
