Abstract:Beta-tricalcium phosphate (beta-TCP) refers to one ideal bone repair substance with good biocompatibility and osteogenicity. A digital light processing (DLP)-system used in this study creates bioceramic green part by stacking up layers of photocurable tricalcium phosphate-filled slurry with various beta-TCP weight fractions. Results show that the sintering shrinkage is anisotropic and the shrinkage vertically reaches over that horizontally. The obtained porous beta-TCP parts have both macroporous outer structure and microporous inner structure, the macropore size is 400-600 mu m and the micropore size is 500-1500 nm. The mechanical tests show that the porous beta-TCP bioceramic's compressive strength reaches 16.53 MPa. The cell culture confirmed that the porous beta-TCP bioceramic is capable of achieving the effective attaching, growing, and proliferating pertained to mouse osteoblast cells. This study identified considerable blood vessels and significant ectopic bone forming obviously based on the histologically-related assessment when implanting to rabbit femoral condyle deficiency for 3 months. Thus, under high bioactive property and osteoinductivity, and large precision and mechanical strength that can be adjusted, the DLP printed porous beta-TCP ceramics is capable of being promising for special uses of bones repairing.
The Preparation of Porous Β-Tcp Scaffold by Foam Impregnationand Its Biocompatibility

Abstract:The subject of this paper is to prepare β-TCP scaffold for bone tissue engineering. The β-TCP powders were mixed with appropriate amounts of Al2O3-MgO-H3PO4 based binder to form the slurry. The porous scaffold was produced using foam impregnation process. The green samples were dried at low temperature and sintered at 900-1200℃ so the scaffold gained. Osteocytes isolated from fetal shinbone were seeded on the β-TCP template to culture in vitro. The biocompatibility was evaluated through the observation of adhesion, growth of the osteocytes by SEM. The porous, which was made by foam impregnation process, possesses high porosity, open pore morphology. The surface of β-TCP scaffold was adhered by lots of osteocytes with perfect configuration when the scaffold-cell co-culture in vitro. These results indicate the porous β-TCP scaffold prepared by foam impregnation possesses good biocompatibility.

Abstract:The ideal bone tissue engineering scaffolds are long-cherished with the properties of interconnected macroporous structures, adjustable degradation and excellent biocompatibility. Here,.a series of porous alpha/beta-tricalcium phosphate (alpha/beta-TCP) biphasic bioceramics with different phase ratios of alpha-TCP and beta-TCP were successfully synthesized by heating an amorphous calcium phosphate precursor. The chemical and morphological characterization showed that - and -TCP phases co-existed in the /-TCP bioceramics and they had interconnected pore structures with size between 200 and 500 mu m. The in vitro dissolution behavior and bioactivity of the dual alpha/beta-TCP were also probed in static and dynamic SBF for the first time. The results revealed that alpha/beta-TCP scaffolds had good in vitro bioactivity, as the formation of bone-like apatite layers was induced on the scaffolds after mineralization in SBF. Moreover, dissolution rate of alpha/beta-TCP bioceramics in dynamic environment was higher than that under static condition. Compared with monophasic TCP ceramics, these porous alpha/beta-TCP bioceramics displayed a tailored dissolution rate proportionate to the TCP content (alpha and beta) in the materials. Further, the degradation profile of porous alpha/beta-TCP was well-described by Avrami equation. The porous dual alpha/beta-TCP bioceramics with controllable degradation behavior hold great potential to be applied in bone tissue engineering as bone substitutes. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:β-TCP ceramics have good biocompatibility and excellent osteoconductivity, as a kind of biodegradable subβ- stitute materials they are used widely for bone defect reparation in clinical. However, when β-TCP was prepared alone, it is not only lacking of osteoinductivity, but also the material's degradation process does not match bone growth rate. Reβ- search progress of modified β-TCP materials in a decade was summarized in this paper. Lastly, the research direction of β-TCP materials for bone tissue engineering was prospected.

Abstract:The ideal bone tissue engineering scaffolds are long-cherished with the properties of suitable three-dimensional structure, controlled biodegradability and acceptable biocompatibility. Here, the porous biphasic α/β-tricalcium phosphate (α/β-TCP) bioceramics with different two phase ratios of α-tricalcium phosphate (α-TCP) and β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) were successfully synthesised by heating an amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP) precursor containing pore-forming agent. Abstract:Porous β-tricalcium phosphate bioceramic (PTCP) has important roles in surgical implants because of good biocompatibility. But the low compressive strength of the ceramic limits its application. The preparation of PTCP was improved with the adjustment of the constituents and the sintering-process. A new type of PTCP material with high compressive strength was made. The compositions, microstructure and properties of PTCP were analyzed by TG-DSC, XRD, TEM, SEM and so on. The result indicates that stearic acid burns sufficiently and gives out carbon dioxide and water vapor when slowly heated between 200 ℃ and 400 ℃ so that the porous structure like coral in β-TCP bioceramic is formed. Through crystallization at 470 ℃ and 570 ℃, more CaO-P2O5 glass-cement is converted into crystallite-glass, which is beneficial for improving the compressive strength of β-TCP bioceramic.PTCP can form a support action in bone imperfect section with good solubility.

Abstract:Hydroxyapatite exhibits the outstanding biocompatibility and bioactivity with bone replacement in living tissues. Porous hydroxyapatite bioceramic is able to intensity the osteoconduction and osteoinduction and suitable for artificial bone substitutes. By means of controllingporosity, size, interconnectivity and surface roughness of pores, the porous HA with optimal properties can be obtained. Variousmethods for preparing porous HAbioceramic have been introduced, such as pore-forming agentmethod, foaming method, conversion of natural body, colloidal template method, and freeze casting. To improve properties of porousHAbioceramic, two or several kinds of preparation methodshave beencombined to use, and designing and developing porous HA-based biocomposite materials is also acceptable.

Abstract:Objective To investigate a novel method for the preparation of porous bioceramic scaffold of β-tricalcium phosphate (TCP) based on additive manufacturing and gel-casting technology.Methods Internal porous structures of scaffold were designed by computer aided design (CAD) software, resin molds were produced by stereolithography, then the bioceramic slurry were cast into the molds, and were sintered to remove the resin mold after hardening.As a result, the porous bioceramic scaffolds of β-TCP were obtained.Characteristics of microcosmic pore structures, mechanical properties and cell compatibility of the scaffolds were examined subsequently.Results Porous structures of β-TCP scaffold were consistent with the original design, with the interval porosity of 45.1%±1.2%.and the pore size of 300 to 500 μ m; The average compressive strength was 5.3±0.8 MPa; The results of in vitro test showed that osteoblasts were well attached and spread on scaffold, which indicated that the porous scaffold had good biocompatibility.Conclusion A novel method based on additive manufacturing and gel-casting technology has been proposed to produce porous bioceramic scaffold, which can provide scaffolds with complex shape and controlled internal porous structures.
Preparation of New Porous Composite Artificial Bone and Properties

Abstract:[Objective]To prepare a new porous composite artificial bone substitute and evaluate its properties.[Method]Thermally induced phase separation was adopted to prepare the artificial bone made from oyster shell powder and PLLA which were proportionally mixed and its properties as porosity rate,pore size and mechanical strength were assessed.Meanwhile the related variation parameters were examined every 2 weeks in a course of 14 weeks after the slices of CAB and pure PLLA were immersed in NS of 37℃ in vitro,the results of which were compared in statistics.[Result]The average porosity rate of artifical bone with TIPS method was 85.1% and pore sizes ranged 100-300 μm under the SEM,with better pore connectivity and regulation shape.The average compressive strength was 2.12 MPa.As the immersion prolonged,the regular variation was observed about the mass loss of CAB and the pH alteration of solution,there was statistically difference in the indexes between the two groups(P﹤0.05).[Conclusion]The porosity rate,pore size,mechanical strength and degradation performance in vitro of the artifical bone made by TIPS method can satisfy the requirement of bone substitute.

Abstract:Biphasic calcium phosphate (BCP) ceramic is an important bone grafting material in orthopedic field. BCP bioceramic is developed by an optimum balance of the stable phase of hydroxyapatite and the soluble β-tricalcium phosphate with the adjustable bioactivity and biodegradation. The researching history, preparation process and material evaluation are reviewed. Porous BCP ceramic simulated as the structure of nature bone is an excellent scaffold materials of bone tissue engineering, which is suitable for the growth of cells and bone tissue. The porous structure, mechanical properties and biological behavior of the porous BCP ceramic were concluded. The potential research of BCP bioceramic as scaffold materials for tissue engineering and carrier for various growth factors are described. Moreover the prospect of the tissue-engineered BCP ceramic scaffold is put forward.

Abstract:Attempt to increase the mechanical properties of porous bioceramics, a dense/porous structured β-TCP bioceramics that mimic the characteristics of nature bone were fabricated. Experimental results show that the dense/porous structured β-TCP bioceramics demonstrated excellent mechanical properties with compressive strength up to 74 MPa and elastic modulus up to 960 MPa, which could be tailored by the dense/porous cross-sectional area ratio obeying the rule of exponential growth. The interface between the dense and porous bioceramics is connected compactly and tightly with some micropores distributed in the matrix of both porous and dense counterparts. The dense/porous structure of β-TCP bioceramics may provide an effective way to increase the mechanical properties of porous bioceramics for bone regeneration at weight bearing sites.

Abstract:The detachment teeth were calcinated first time in order to remove the organic principle,and second cal-cinated with the aqua of (NH4)2HPO4,then get biphasic bioceramics composed with Hydroxyapatite(HA)and β-tricalcium phosphate(β-TCP) . After grinding through 200 mesh screen,the porous bioceramics was prepared by im-mersion method using organic foam. At the same time,a series of examinations were carried out including energy dispersion analysis of X-ray,scanning electron microscope,the porosity of scaffolds,elemental analysis and compres-sive strength. It showed that the ceramic was white and the main phase was HA/β-TCP,which presented reticular structure with macropore and micropore. The porosity of scaffolds was 74. 85 percent and the calcium to phosphorus ratio of bioceramics was 1. 62. The compressive strength could attain(3.483±0.321)MPa.

Abstract:The authors have prepared the artificial bone of porous tricalcium phosphate ceramics according to an appropriate formula and manufacturing technology. Physical and chemical testing shows that it possesses several distinguishing features: the communicating pores and macro/micropores; mean pore size, 380 μm (from 240 μm to 510 μm); porosity, 46.4 %; and compressive strength, 97.4 kg/cm2. It consists of CaO (49.09 %) and P2O5 (48.84 %). The testing of its biocompatibility shows that it is devoid of systemic or local toxicity, and free of irritation or foreign body response in tissues, and it does not result in hemolysis or mutation. The new bone readily grows into its pores with direct contact to the implanted material. 11 cases of bone defects were treated with this artificial bone with satisfactory results.

Abstract:Objective:To probe the biodegradation and its mechanism ofβ-TCP ceramics which were implanted in the body.Method:β-TCP powder as raw material was selected with suitable binder added,and prepared a kind of porous biodegradable ceramics.The biomedical characteristics ofβ-TCP were discussed by means of the animal experiments.Result:When specimen was implanted in the animal for eight weeks,the materials at the border began to degraded and the fringe became irregular.After twenty weeks,the implanted material degraded obviously and was replaced gradually by the new bone.Conclusion:β-TCP ceramics has superior biocompatibility and biodegradability,which can induce the ingrowth of new bone,and become a kind of ideal material for prosthetic applications.Author's address Microelectronic Materials Institute,Dept.of Materials Science and Engineering,Tongji University,Shanghai,200092

Abstract:Bone tissue engineering provides a new way to repair the bone defect in orthopaedics. The scaffolds, porous materials with excellent biocompatibility, bioactivity and biodegradability, play an important role in bone tissue engineering. Furthermore, the bioactivity of the pore interior surfaces is very important for cell attachment, differentiation and growth, as well as new bone tissue ingrowth into pores. In this paper, β-TCP was selected as materials of scaffolds, and its bioactivity was improved by activating the interior surfaces of pore walls. The porous β-TCP scaffolds with about 50~300μm of pore size and above 80% of porosity were obtained by 3D-gel-laminated processing. Their surfaces of the scaffolds were easily covered by a low crystallized bone-like apatite layer, which determined by XRD and FTIR, after immersing in 1.5SBF solution following pre-treatment by NaOH solution. MTT and ALP assays were performed after cells cultured on the porous scaffolds with bone-like structure, and the results showed higher proliferation rate and differentiation level than that on the scaffolds without treatment, which indicated that the porous β-TCP scaffolds with bone-like apatite layer on surfaces of pore walls possess higher bioactivity. Therefore, the bioactivity of tissue engineering scaffolds could be improved by deposited bone-like apatite layer on their surfaces.

Abstract:The subject of this paper is to produce scaffold of bone tissue engineering with good performance. The β-TCP (tricalcium phosphate) powders prepared by direct precipitation were mixed with appropriate amount of Al2O3-MgO-H3PO4 based binder to prepare the slurry. The porous scaffold was formed using foam impregnation process. Then the green samples were dried at low temperature. Finally they were sintered up to 900-1200°C to produce porous β-TCP scaffolds. The biocompatibility of the porous β-TCP was evaluated in vitro. The investigation shows that the porous β-TCP scaffold made by foam impregnation process with Al2O3-MgO-H3PO4 as the binder has big pores, high porosity, opening network configuration and good biocompatibility.

Abstract:Porous P-tricalcium phosphate (beta-TCP)/ Poly L-lactic acid (PLI-A) composites were prepared by thermally induced phase separation method. The results showed that the composite had an interconnected pore structure with similar to 200 mu m macropores. The inorganic particle content in the composites varied from 50% to 80% and these particles were homogeneously dispersed in PLLA matrix. The composites obtained in this Study could act as a promising scaffold for bone tissue engineering because of the pore structure and the mechanical properties.
