Abstract:The preparation conditions of chitosan modified amphoteric polyacrylamide (CAmPAM) were investigated in this paper. Firstly, acrylamide(AM), methyl acrylyl ethyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (DMC), maleic acid(MA) and chitosan(CS), as the main reactants, were applied in the preparation of the novel reinforcing agents. Secondly, the effects of the weight ratio of CS:DMC:AM:MA, pH value, concentration, time and temperature of copolymerization reaction and the corresponding dosages of the four kinds of initiating agents on the graft rates of the resulted products were mainly presented. Thirdly, the reinforcing properties of the graft copolymer as the additives in the papermaking process were also discussed. Finally, the optimum preparation conditions of CAmPAM were as follows: CS:DMC:AM:MA ratio of 1:5:9:1, reaction temperature of 80 degrees C, the consistency of ceric ammonium nitrate of 0.4 mmol/L, dissolution time in acetic acid of 20 minutes, copolymerization time of 240 minutes, 0.075 % ammonium persulfate and sodium bisulfite, initiating agent A of 0.075%, total monomers concentration of 16% and total volume of 100ml.
