Abstract:Organic/inorganic composite antifouling membranes were developed for removal of oil-in-water (O/W) emulsions. The composite membranes were featured with three-layer structure, i.e., a porous ceramic membrane substrate, a polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) ultrafiltration sub-layer, and a polyamide/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) composite thin top-layer. The PVDF polymer was cast on tubular porous ceramic membranes with an immersion precipitation method, and the polyamide/PVA composite thin top-layer was fabricated with an interfacial polymerization method. Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) absorption spectrum, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscope (AFM) were employed to characterize the composite membrane. The effects of the technological parameters in the interfacial polymerization for fabricating the top-layer on the oil/water separation performance of composite membranes were systematically investigated. The results show that the oil rejection coefficient of the composite membranes generally increases with increasing the reactant concentration in the interfacial polymerization. To improve the hydraulic permeability of the composite membrane, both the concentrations of piperazine and that of terephthaloyl chloride should be controlled in a proper range which are 15g?L?1and 40g?L?1, respectively. With increasing the PVA concentration in the interfacial polymerization, the water flux of the composite membrane decreased. The prepared optimum composite membranes show a good performance for treating the O/W emulsions with the oil drops mean diameter of 2.365 μm. At the operating pressure of 0.4 MPa, the hydraulic permeability of the composite membrane remained steadily about 190L?m?2?h?1, the oil concentration in the filtrate was less than 1.6 mg?L?1, and the oil rejection coefficient was always higher than 98.5% throughout the whole operation. The separation performance of the composite membrane is better than that of PVDF ultrafiltration membrane.
